  1. ok the annual Christmas turducken bacon bear is ready for the oven. it is a simple recipe you put a chicken inside a duck which is then put inside a turkey. All of that is inserted into the butt of a live bear. He is then wrapped in bacon and baked for 3 hours at 400. The older I get, the tougher it is to get the bear to cooperate.
  2. I dont see where the written dec plan says when enough get on borad, we will get it, I see where they support VOLUNTARY implementation and it is not critical biological need. How does that equate to we will have it. You sound like a politician.
  3. yes we dont want it or need it, but if forced upon us, we would learn to tolerate it. Sounds pretty democratic to me in a socialist kind of way.
  4. ok so both daughters worked last evening, so I watched some vurses here all alone. The bucks of tecomate had a show from iowa where they were doing deer drives. Holy crap if we did it that way I would be scared. Shooting over and over at moving and standing still deer. All shotgun territory and they all had their obligatory (free) beretta guns for saying they had beretta guns. Missing deer at point blank ranges. it kind of scared me.
  5. I got a new dry box for my muzzlelaoding supplies oh and a Chia herb garden. I threw that outside does that count? lol
  6. I agree one 25-06 des all I want from chucks to bear.
  7. My nephew has one in 25-06, ahd has the huntsman ml barrel fitted to it. It is deadly accurate and with a few tweaks, it is a great gun. One shot one kill.
  8. see Doc great minds think alike sometimes lol. Have a Merry Christmas and a HappyNew Year
  9. WTH. I heard a bunch of banging on my roof. I went out there was some guy in a red suit and a bunch of deer on my roof. I asked him what he was doing on my new roof and if he dented or scratched it, he was gonna pay. He took off in a flash. Oh yeah venison for dinner tonight. I hope you all habe a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy prosperous New Year.
  10. with the cost of a non resident license, and the supposed devastation of the herd, why would non residents pay that price. I doubt they have a serious impact.
  11. I agree the 260 is a swet caliber. However finding affordable ammo at least in my area is tough.
  12. Sadly, that is what most people think hunting is. They want to make our hunting just like on TV. As far as seeing a lot of deer at once, 10 - 15 years ago, the farm I hunted and my whole wmu 6a was very over populated. I sat in a box blind off the edge of an alfalfa field. It had sliding windows, but I do not drink coffee lol. I saw as many as 22 deer in the field afternoons. Those days are gone now that the polulation is under control. We also had 5000 car deer accidents a year in my county at that time. I am drifting from my point that those shows give people such an unrealistic idea of hunting, it will be the ruination of hunting as we know it. 10 years ago, the term shooter buck was unheard of. It was a buck, it was shot. It was antler not bone, and the number of points has been replaced with the number of inches. We were much less competitive They all have a free encore in 300 win mag and everyone has to have one to kill a deer because that is what they use on tv. You too can hunt that way too if you want to spend 3 to 5 thousand a hunt, sit in a blind over a bait pile and have a guy wth you tell you what you can shoot and what you cant. Me I personally want more control than that. These shows are the basis for QDM AR and all other ways of controllling hunting so we can be just like those phony guys on TV. I would love to invite any of them to my piece of property and have them actually hunt, which means do your own scouting, setup a stand and hunt. If they were lucky enough to take a deer, field dress it and drag it to camp. Maybe they would get an idea of what hunting really is. I am sure that a week of that would never make it on tv.
  13. A good choice in my opinion. I find it funny guys say a .243 with a 100 grain bullet at 2900 fps is inadequate, but a .257 with a 100 grain bullet at 3100 is adequate. There is such little difference, it is unnoticable. The deer is not gonna say ouch I got shot with a 100 grain 243, phew I am ok, I am glad it wasnt a 257 roberts or 25-06. Calibers smaller in diameter such as 223 are used in military rifles quite successfully. There is a trend to use over kill for a white tail. As with any caliber, shot placement is critical. The problem is most guys using large caliber rifles think it does not matter where they hit because they have a lot of power behind it. I took a 190 pound 8 point this fall with my 25-06 with a 115 grain bullet. He ran 50 yards and fell in a pile. I now take that same rifle and load 100 and 87 grainers for coyotes and it is awesome. I am not advocating for a 25, I am simply pointing out that there is little difference between them, but a lot of guys think my 25 is marginal for a whitetail. I will match it against any supposed deer caliber there is. If you do your part, the 243 will work well on any whitetail that ever walked, and will devastate any coyote. A good bullet that shoots well and accurately out of your gun is all you need. Take out vitals, they will die. They may not fall in a pile at your feet, but, they will not go far. Get some good 100 grainers and have a lot of fun shooting it until it shoots well, and go forth and hunt.
  14. welcome Mike as an old time hunter, you will eventually substitute the word friend with hunting buddies. They become both.
  15. I habe shot at one running deer in my life. I was fortunate enough to take him in the boiler room ad maybe 25 feet and he piled up right there with open sites. A nice 6 point. It was on a drive. I also had a dmp and the doe he was running with stopped to see what had happened, and I shot her also. I have to say in all they ears we did drives in the swamp, this was the only time a running shot was presented. We pushes deer very easliy. If you takke yor time moving them, they seem to mve in front of you. That being said, today, I would not attempt the running shot. My eyes are not what they used to be. I am strictly scope now, and I do not thnk I could I could do as well on arunning shot as I could with open sites, and I have no desire to find out.
  16. The funny par tof all this is noone makes these suggestions to make hunting better for everyone. They armade to make hunting better for the person starting the post. If it was thought of more as universally making hunting better, they may be more thought out.
  17. and if you would like to travel north, you can use them all except a dmpfrm the sz for 4 days in archery the end of September. You can use a dmp, but only in the area it is issued for. So in September, I can use my two bow ml tags in 4 days, Get two more bow ml tags and a buck tag and possibly a dmp. I took two this fall and was very happy about that.
  18. The "idiots" I was referring to are the ones who do he shooting of things other than a well identified target and what is beyond it. Maybe we shoud just make huning illegal. Again if you feel so uncomfortable hunting the way it is, stay home. You are more likely to get hurt or killed driving a vehicle to your hunting spot. Maybe we should make driving to a hunting area illegal.
  19. I doubt a lot of you guys who get a dmp maybe every three of four years like we do in my area would be so willing to let every small buck walk. If you had one tag for the season, you would not be so selective. There have been tons of posts of people complaining they arent seeing deer and havent filled two or three tags. I pay 98 dollars a year to hunt. Tell me I will have less tags and less time, I just may keep my hundred for me. I am sure a lot of people will feel the same. And the bottom line is in this state money makes the world go round. They are not going to shorten seasons or do anything that will jeopardize selling licenses. They are adding new iplements to entice more to hunt.
  20. if you want to use that argument, you better eliminate dmp's then. umm as I recall a dmp requires no antlers. You cant fix stupid. As a hunter ed instructor, I do not see how a lot of these idiots get a certificate. I guarantee you they would not from me.
  21. Maybe NY should just make hunting illegal. If it saves one life it is worth it. Come on. Doing a drive safely is not rocket science. You set up safe shooting zones when you set up. Drivers come from one way, which i usually the way the deer coem from. Watchers are in a line. You don'y shoot toward the drivers or the other watchers. Pretty simple. I have said this before, but it needs to be said again. We can only protect people from themselves just so much. If you think hunting is so dangerous, do not hunt. We did drives regularly on state land. No one wore orange or any other "safe" color. No one got shot or even shot at. We hunted together since 1982 and not even an incident where anyone felt uncomfortable. They have also been very successful. You will neber get the perfect huntng set ups.
  22. unwrap it, adore it, hunt with it kill deer with it and go with it.
  23. climb a tree and act like a nut. they come running.
