LIVE from the woods 2015 Edition! - Sixth Year Going Strong
moog5050 replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
I don't think your stand is quite level. Be sure to lean way over to your right when shooting. -
I will adjust my standard guess of 50-400lbs to 200-600lbs. Great bear. Good luck.

North American Kudu, go get him. -
Even 20yds off trail may affect movement until they are accustomed to it. I would keep it as far back and concealed as is possible.

You mean like a 3yr old with two big spikes? That would be very different for sure. -
Without looking at any data, I would guess generally LI followed by WNY, with some monsters in the ADK that are very hard to hunt. As I think about it, Southern Tier is pretty darn good too.

Zeus You will like the goliath. Very comfortable. You will have to stand or lean out to shoot over the rail but it works fine for me when bowhunting.

Do the bear push deer out? We don't have bear around here, but I could see that being an issue. I have always wanted hunt an area with bear, but maybe not if it ruins the deer hunting. -
Good luck hookhunter. I have had organ pieces fall out of deer when using rage and have the hole plugged by other internals. All were dead and did not go far. You gave it time. Be persistent and you will find him.

I weigh over 300 and have a Goliath. No complaints. That said, those tree walkers look really nice for a climber. Other option is sticks with a hangon like line wolf. More versatile but takes more practice and effort IMO.

For what it's worth, the doe I shot Friday ran across a field through a hedgerow and took the dirt nap In The next open field. I was shocked it didn't bed In the hedgerow but it died in the open field against a small log. If the field has high grass, he may feel safe there and they can be tough to find until you almost step on him.

Jjb - good for you doing a nice thing. I hope the buyer follows through. If not, you still did a nice thing and he can live with his own conscience. Too bad for him. I think I said it last week - one either has integrity or doesnt.

Wow Core, sounds like a great first day stalking the swamp. U will get the next one. Good point from Law, don't puncture stomach, intestine or bladder.
-
No wonder I am always tripping over branches when I climb your stands. Nice of you to mention this to me.

It happens. Pick your spot and Try to concentrate on your shot routine - not killing the deer. It's just another target. Forget it and hit that next target.

Possibly my most exciting hunt yesterday. Spot and stalk in high grass field to 40yds and waited until she fed a bit closer. Broadside shot at 27yds on the money with the vintage 1970s Bear. Couldn't be happier about 2 for 2 with the recurves and to top it off, my first spot and stalk.

How Many Acres Do Think Is Enough To Hunt On?
moog5050 replied to DirtTime's topic in General Hunting
I agree Doc. I know I spent A LOT of time shooting the stick bow this last off season with the goal of killing a deer with it. I always have the goal of taking a mature buck. Doesn't always happen but yes I will set goals. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy hunting even when I don't meet them or take deer. -
The 200s are just over a 400 spine. Stl apparently is not the most consistent arrow but just roll them to check for straightness. The slick trick I send should work fine if you get the bow back in tune
-
He has a long draw. 31". Needs a full length 32" arrow and BH that doesn't sweep so far back. Also needs to put the bow back to proper centershot and tune. 125g head will work just fine with the right spine. My 50lb recurve shoots 175g heads with 100g inserts well. But I use a 340 spine. His compound should be much faster. I bet 125g with full length 400s will fly well.
-
Congrats grizz
-
I think they are 1-1/8". They may be grizztricks or magnums, I will check. I can't speak to spine as I am not familiar with the stl hunter - is that equivalent of a typical 400 spine?
-
Plus, I find many 2 man stands much less comfortable. Basics are great.
-
Perfect. You will reap the benefits as the adjoining land owner. We have one 23 acre parcel that abuts a park (no hunting) on two sides. The amount of deer we see and kill there is incredible and they backfill every year with a 700 acre no hunting park next door. It makes the place hunt much larger than it is.
-
We all know ignorance is bliss - especially if you aren't caught. I have to believe there will be pics of bucks killed posted on the web with the relevant info sufficient to hang the hunter by his own noose.
-
Zeus, PM me your address and I will send you a new package of slick trick magnums. I am not using them. They are 125g but will work better than pushing your centershot all out of whack. You really need that bow properly tuned and it doesn't sound like your shop did you any favors. Can anyone near Rome that has bow tuning skills help Zeus out? Happy to help you if you want to drive to Rochester.
