  1. Interesting chart here: http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/black-powder/277637-blackhorn-209-a.html Might give you an idea. The second chart uses a 300g at 120g of 209 and shows a 26" drop at 300yds with a 3" high 0 at 100yds.
  2. I didn't follow your point Culver, but you are correct. Assuming its an employment relationship between Phil and A&E (which I doubt) - the 1st amendment can only be invoked in terms of a retaliation claim against public employers - not private employers. Again, I agree that the issue is not constitutional but rather contractual.
  3. Good luck. I look forward to your report. Have to imagine we are talking 2 feet or more of holdover at 300 with a 100yd 0, but am curious as to what you find. That is a poke for an MZ for sure.
  4. Thats a bomb with an MZ. I think any bullet/powder combo will require a lot of holdover at those distances. Plus with a larger bullet and speeds much less than a rifle, even slight wind will be factor. Why not use a rifle if you are spending that type of cash on a trip?
  5. Actually Culver - there are two aspects of the First Amendment that include the Establishment clause (gov can't take any action to establish a religion) and the free exercise clause (allows individuals to speak their mind with certain limitations (ex. yelling fire in a crowded theater)). I believe strongly in the truth of the Bible and Phil's comments are based on scripture (He even quoted some). That said, whether you agree with Phil or not or agree that the Bible is truth, he had the right to make the statement and, I am sure, A&E had the right under their contract with Phil to suspend or terminate him if he made any public statement that they believe reflects adversely on A&E. In the end, its not a Consitutional issue - its a contractual issue and none of us are privy to the terms of that contract. I make an assumption here based on my own experience in addressing these types of issues on contracts - certain types of contracts like this undoubtedly have such a provision.
  6. WNY - even without a good blood trail, they were accurate and I will continue to use them.
  7. Phade When I butchered that deer, there was en exit wound behind the opposite shoulder. Still, almost no blood trail. Thank goodness it piled up so close. It may have exited the cavity and lodged in the opposite shoulder, but I really didn't check closely nor did I remove the meat from the front shoulder while butchering. Too cold and wasn't worth the effort for the small amount of useable meat there. I was surprised to find the exit wound. I was using 110g of 209.
  8. I could drop to my birth weight of 9lbs and never catch that little guy. I forgot about that when joking, but he actually did run a deer down. lol Good to be 24 and 140lbs.
  9. That's why I pay a much smaller person to take photos with my deer. Makes them look much bigger. lol I need all the help I can get. I am not that big. 6'1" and 320ish lbs. I was bigger when I took powerlifting seriously, but hunting is taking position A in my hobbies. When I drop to 275lbs, I plan to chase the deer down on foot as they run away. Lord knows I shouldn't shoot a slug gun at them as I almost "shot my eye out" trying to do so.
  10. All that said, my very first day of hunting ever, I passed a fawn in the first 15 minutes just because I didn't want my first deer to be one that I carried out like a handbag. lol
  11. If the goal is to reduce or control overpopulation, then shooting both the doe and fawn is best case scenario. Still don't see why a fawn shouldn't be taken even under that scenario, but again, I may have a limited understanding here.
  12. I have no expertise on this subject and have not studied it at all, but I am curious why some believe its better to shoot a doe that has proven its ability to survive and age (and breed) vs. one that may not make it through the first hard winter. I realize a fawn has less meat and that's why I would prefer a larger doe, but if maintaining population is a goal, why not shoot a fawn that may not make it through the first winter? Obviously some fawn, just like older does, will make it no matter what to keep the herd age structure in place. I am just not sure I understand the argument of why its bad to shoot a fawn vs. an older doe (again other than less meat). I assume its not because of sympathy for the smaller, less experienced animal.
  13. Great late season buck DEZ. Looks like he was one number off from winning the lottery. lol I shot my first MZ deer on Sat. Decent doe and I was very happy to close out the season that way.
  14. Hunted with good friends. Enjoyed in their success. Shot my biggest bow buck. And one of my favorites was planning a specific stand for a specific deer under specific wind at a specific time of the day and see it actually work. That was cool. Friend missed the deer, but it came where and when we expected. Very good season even though I missed the last two weeks due to work. More addicted than ever.
  15. I fish lake ontario, but hear erie is good for walleye
  16. Nice job and congrats. You will always remember that first one, I bet.
  17. That's the one Phade mentioned. Awesome deer. I would post the photo, but I think that's up to the hunter to decide.
  18. LOL - this is 8H, you can have more DMPs than you want. Easy to ask buddies to assign them over and I am not sure anyone is denied 2 at the outset or on second chance request. Well done WNY - I had to miss this whole last week due to a trial (in the office now). Hopefully I can tag one more next weekend during MZ.
  19. X2 - I have the summit climber and its great, buts it is much easier and quieter than I thought to set up the sticks with hang on and more versatile. The climber will remain in the truck, but I guarantee that I will use the alpha with sticks much more than the climber next year.
  20. Not such a strange scenario. My doe from last weekend was shot while I was leaving my stand slightly early on sat. We ended up tracking her and catching up with her on Sat. at 6pm. She sat there at 10yds while we discussed what to do staring at us the whole time. She was shot through the chest and blew out right shoulder and she was hurting, but I didn't want to shoot after dark, especially being close to a park. While I wasn't thrilled about it, I decided to try to slit its throat and as I walked up to her, she got up on 3 legs and ran another 50yds downhill. We let her wait to morning, came back to track her all over again and finally finish her off (after my nice scope bite incident). Would have been a heck of a lot easier on all of us, including the doe, if I had just finished her that night. Still not sure what I would do if in the same situation again, but leaning towards finishing her off if it were to happen again.
  21. Not a fan of the selfie, but if you can't laugh at yourself and allow others to join in ..... Be careful out there boys and girls. My story is that I was attacked by a mountain lion and lived to tell about it. That doe was tough!
  22. Just noticed you mentioned the basket rack - also carry more ammo than you think you need unless you like to watch bucks hang around at 20 yds while you text your friend to come shoot him. lol Probably better that I ran out as he was not a shooter but I was in the end of season mentality.
  23. Good news is that what was left of the doe is not vacuum sealed in the freezer, after a 5 hour energency room wait.
