  1. I got one with my recurve the other day at 20 yards, first one with the stick bow. I have had several others with the compound / sights but nnothing prior with my poke and hope shooting stick.
  2. Lots of the southern states open up as early as the first wekend in September. NOw they all seem to find that the bow does not put pressure on the deer herd like gun does. I would love to see NY change gun to less than 2 week season for gun ( rifle - shotgun ) and 1 week for BP. The early opening in bow would be easier for us older hunters, as I sure do not do well with the snow and ice of the late season.
  3. I had one year a new type of buck grunt in my bow shop and a young hunter was looking at calls and he picked that brand. The next day was opening day. He called me at about 1 pm and asked if I still had more of that brand call. I said yes. He said his buddy was coming over to get one. The reason was he called just once at 830 am and a 8 point buck came in to him. The buddy came and got all the rest I had. Now do they work I think it depends on the day...
  4. The reason he only put one side antler was it makes the decoy appear to be the one who would get his butt kicked by any other live bigger bucks in the area.
  5. Let us know when they go on sale. I am about a hour plus away from the Binghamton store.
  6. So should you now go in and pickup a new sight or release. Or if you do take the time to make sure you are sighted in and the release does fit you to a Tee. I over the years would see guys come into my bow shop, buy a total bow package and then except to hunt the next day. It makes more sence to me to buy early and practice all summer with your new bow, release, sight or arrows, so that on opening day you are sure how all will work. How about you ????
  7. I read a mag that suggested the worst time to hunt bucks is in the first 3 weeks of October. They just are not ready, they should be only hunted on the feed area. But do not let them know you are hunting them so they change there pattern. Best to stay away till the rut comes in. How about you and how do you handle the early season, the lack of visability due to the leaves on trees and brush. I hunt ground blinds and it is in the area to the food source. So for me it is just picking the stand that has the right wind for me to sit in....how about you ????
  8. I must be the only hunter that never has had any buck come in when using these calls. How about you, did they work and how many times a hour did you call ????
  9. I see in the hunting mags there are a lot of stories of using a buck decoy. One of them suggest it best used in the rut and to only put one horn on the buck. Seems if you do this it makes your decoy more prone to be pushed out of the area by the big buck. Have you used a decoy and if so how did it work for you ????
  10. I have tried to have both choices be the same area and never have had even one get picked then....so now I always pick the 2nd one that has a high level of permits available.
  11. Doc In the past I have used a tree if one is handy. I also this year picked up a single shooting stick and am going to try to have it with me this year. It opens in a second and can be used sitting down or standing.
  12. I now am physically challenged bad leg and no longer can get into tree stands. But I use to always make them between 3 trees. It makes larger stand and since you are in between the trees you do not have a large outline. I also like that you can build a seat be using two trees and using 2 x 4 and then a piece of plywoods. Nothing like having a good seat to wait out game. Just make sure you tie yourself in so you do not take a nap and find this out as you fall out of the stand...
  13. after 50 + years of hunting I know I sure am not the guy who is perfect. But I sure do try to help younger hunters in both rifle or archery. I had my own bow shop for about 20 years and strived to get into our sport a few new hunters each year. With the amound of single Mom's I amn sure there are lots of kids that do not get a chance to learn about our sport.
  14. I tis hard to understand that some guys think they can buy a gun / rifle at Dick's and walk out the door and hunt. But it sure does help to have a buddy like you who has a bore sighting outfit to get the gun on paper prior to fine tuning at 100 yards. I can do just about you name it with a bow tuning but for some reason I sure have a lack of knowledge on Rifle. My buddy took it to his home in PA were he has his own range and got it so at 100 yards he has a 2 inch group. I shoot it offhand at 75 yards and had a 3 inch group. I am going to ask hime to take my oldest 303 british enfield and see what he can do with it, I got about 400 rounds of army ammo and would like to try to use on wood chucks.
  15. culver creek I am with you. Those early days of being part of a hunt club were some of the great times for me. I lost my Dad early he was just 61. The camp died out within a few years. I was working down south and did not get to come back to hunt with the guys. I wish I could find a club like that, but again when you are a older senior and on a fixed income, cost also become a issue. We sold my old place to be close to my girl and her family. But now to hunt I have to drive 1 1/2 hour back to our old place. In the new area I have not found but one place to hunt and not a lot of deer. I do see a lot of the you just have to have adds in all the bow or hunt mags. I never could think that a bow would be in the same range as a new Remington model 700. I looked last week at a new Maxis Hoyt, set up with a good sight, dropaway rest, bow quiver, peep and kisser. No arrows needed and the price would have been over $1100 dollars. I think this type of cost sure must put a hurt on a guy just starting out with a wife. After the hunt season in Feb the guys would get together to have a meal and go over the last season. There would be larger than life tails of the hunting season and special award. One year they gave me a special bow award for maple tester of the year. I was on a ground blind and a big buck came within 25 yards, I drew and let the arrow go. The arrow seemed to strike the buck. But when I went up after wiating about a 1/2 hour, no blood and no sign, after looking for another 1/2 hour the arrow was found thru the center of a 3 inch maple tree. Well someone had cut it off and made it into this special award that was presented to me. This person went into the overview of how big the buck was, how I drew the bow and picked that spot and let go with just the right release of the finger tab. All had a good time, with the story. I miss those days.
  16. I was out on the hunting area this morning and it was just hell with the bugs / skeeters the temp was in the mid 80's and it was just plain hot. They were biting and the bug juice sure did not work well today.
  17. I am planning cutting some lanes from my built ground blinds and I better take with me some of the bug juice. The one that do me in is the black flies, they bite me and I have major problems...
  18. Sure have had that occur and also not only your ear, but they fly right into your eye and for the next 3 hours you are trying to see..
  19. I sure have to concur. SOme times it seem that some huner just go nuts to get a deer down. Maybe in my case it is how many season I have hunted. I just let a lot of deer walk. I no longer have the old hunt club I once was a member of and miss the inter actions of the many different guys and the pre hunt scouting andbuilding of tree stands or blinds. If you hunted with a bow it was a Bear recurve or peason recurve, wooden arrows and old bear BH. The herd when I started in the 50's was not that large and if you saw a deer it made big news. But duting the gun season you had better not miss, my first rifle was purchased from WW II left over from Ramson outdoors in NJ for a big price of $35 a 303 British Enfield that must have weighted 12 lbs. Over the summer I cut down the stock and refished it and was able to get a 4x scope. The bow season came and no one go a deer with the bow, but there were several sighting. But come opening day and each member had his own stump, rock, blind or treestand that all had special names for members or names like uphill buck stand, or fatdoe. I went to my rock ledge and sat all morning and never saw a thing. Come the PM it started snowing and out came a big 7 point buck, I put the cross hair on his shoulder and trigger off the 180 gr 303 round and the buck went off running . It went out of sight and a few minutes later I hear my Dad call over to me to come over to his stand and there below his stand by about 40 yards was my first buck. that was over 43 years ago and it just seems like yesterday. There for me has been many other opening days but this is one of my special monents.
  20. New York is more a IBO 3D's now, yes there still is NFAA paper targets course but they are now far between areas. My closest is Oxford NY and for me this is about a full hours plus drive.
  21. I got mine from a shoot we attended in the 80's I was shooting in a NFAA shoot and we were shooting at 35 yards at a target, I shoot the first arrow and you could hear it hit other arrows in the center of the target, I shot the next 2 arrows and then also went into the target, but with no sound, I shot the last arrow and again you could hear it strick a arrow. We walked up to the target to pull arrows and mark our scores. When we got up there I had hit two of one guys arrows and nocked the back off bowth arrows. He turked to the other archers and said that SOB broke my arrows. My buddy who was also in the group said Sweet Old Bill would not shoot to just break your arrows he is not a SOB he is sweet old bill... so that how I got the handle in archery shoots and have used it in my email etc...
  22. Noddle one how did you get your ncik name ?? I keep think it was due to fishing and using a noddle rod...
  23. I( sure am planning on drinking and hope to pass it...nest to you and hope all goes well....today I have to go in for a doppler test to see blood flow, I had repaired two years ago I had a 95% blockage on the left side.
