Hanging a Ladder Stand Solo
Nomad replied to Northcountryman's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Can of corn . If I’m in open hardwoods , I carry it like any ladder ,upright , bend knees grab a rung stand up and carry it to next tree lean it against tree . My 17 footers with large platforms , I carry them to the base of the tree slide lower rung to tree and walk it up , now it’s a challenge at times and I’ve dropped them walking them up but eventually I win . A lot depends on ones strength, or better yet experience with ladders . -

That should be rephrased , who hasn’t had that happen . Without a pass through ,blood can be hard to find , as most comes from the exit wound as its lower , the higher entrance wound doesn’t bleed outside much . I’m tracking a friends buck tomorrow, no exit ,but a solid behind the shoulder hit . He wisely ,backed out gave it time to die . -

Final count 4 doe, 15 turkey , 2 coyotes in that field . I’ve named this stand , “ the every deer will see you stand “ , put up in haste , to close to field ,wide open , will be Ok for rifle . My buddy shot a nice buck at last light on his land ,right behind the shoulder ,no pass through ,it ran hard into golden rod, he sat 30 minutes backed out , I’ll be helping him look in the AM . -

Glad to hear some buck movement taking place , I’m still on a light hunting schedule, but I’ll be out tomorrow afternoon , then W, TH , F in Letchworth ,then everyday on my spot till necessary. Good luck everyone . -
In the beginning I was all on board , with what we were told to do . Now it’s clearly in the scamdemic stage . NJ,Conn, and Penn all far within the guide lines as no travel states, yet they’re not . Let that sink in ,they have the MOST people coming here , hence the biggest threat ,but no quarantine . Yet my buddy who spent a few days hunting Elk on a mountain in a Utah ,is supposed to quarantine . If the threat was real, NJ, Conn, and Penn would top the list . Not a guy on top of a mountain .

We own farm acreage in the town of Canandaigua that would be low end here .

My favorite meal of the year ! Grilled , along with salt potatoes, and grilled asparagus, Mrs will cook up some mushrooms as well . I might soak them in Italian dressing for a bit , but salt and pepper alone is fine too .

Correct nobody will stop them . I know many who’ve flown in and out of NY to no travel states , and next to none , quarantined , many left the forms incomplete, put wrong info or skipped them altogether. Neighbor just came back from FLA. National Guard at airport stops him , he says he’s an essential worker doing Gov work, shows them a stack of papers from an old job , ,they have no idea what these are and tell him to, just “ get the Hell out of here “..... Another friend came up from fla. she thought the health care folks handing out forms were sales people , and said no thanks and walked passed .

Idk they eat grass and shrubs, no crops for miles . I can’t wait for the rut , there’s regularly 12-15 doe in the fenced in school yard , should be fun to watch . -

Rain and no deer . However , I needed to trim this stand, so I brought in pole saw ,and hand saw is always in my pack , now the lanes are open again . Then I moved a ladder , really happy with its new spot , I dragged it through a thick area , tons of rubs and scrapes , that’s good in another week and a half those guys will get stupid . -
This reminds me ,I have to put up more posted signs at one spot . A guy on the neighboring land ( where they let anyone hunt ) has a stand facing our field ,and trees trimmed so he can shoot into our Timothy field .

According to the DEC only 5% of hunters take two bucks ,not sure reducing it to one would go a long way . Where I hunt the age structure has increased very well over the years with just a volunteer change in attitudes of hunters .

Many people think the property line , is the edge of the woods or hedgerow . I have many old wire fences 10-15 inside the woods , that because woods are ever expanding . This is one reason , “ hunting the line “ can be tricky with out surveys.

Gun value ....help a bowhunter out.
Nomad replied to Trial153's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Typically a retail shop will give you half of what they think they can get for it . Most gun shops I’ve been in don’t look like they’re making a killing . I sold a bunch of guns through an auction house , they take 20% of the sale price no reserve. With having to do a nics check on each gun sale and dealing with untold number of perspective buyers if I sold them myself seemed like the way to go . -
I’m defrosting mine tomorrow, since my buddy got an Elk ,I’ll be putting some in there soon , to be followed by a decent buck I hope . I should have an alarm as well , we’re not in it daily so it would make sense . The other day Mrs Nomad grabbed some ground , well it’s next to the drier ,and she had a stack of towels on top of the freezer , one of which dropped a bit and she “ closed “ the door on it . Lucky it was discovered in time

I,let a friend turkey hunt, he said guys were coming onto the property across this one hedgerow. I had a sign on a tree there , so I put two additional ones on fence posts and drove those into the ground on each side of the little path they walked on . This was well onto our side and you had to walk between them just a few feet apart . I sat nearby the next Saturday and waited , here comes a guy, he stops ,glasses my buddy’s blind, then a crosses over . I come over , he claims he thought he was still on the other farm ..... He walked the property line passing at least 10 signs then crossed over walking between 2 .
