  1. I agree Steve, although mine was an easy find near a road so I'm hoping road kill. Plus that buck would not be shot by any of our hunters , but yes a lot of nice "deads" found on this thread .
  2. No a big fan of taking tape measures to racks anyways , but for those who do here's what I found on another forum . plus this link http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/big-buck-zone/trail-camera-technology-hunting-breakthrough-or-unfair-advantage
  3. Tough year for me too, today was my third time out , and zippo , three hours of walking . Gotta say nothing on my cameras , think our deer went south with Moog's . Farmer said he finds all his in his no till fields, I walk mostly hedgerows and trails though . Heres today finds.....
  4. I'll take $7.49 of your a forum member !
  5. Agree. For 49 cents they'll come to my house pick up an envelope and bring it to my buddy's house, on an island off the coast of Washington state . Im not walking across the street for 49 cents.
  6. Congrats again, we got a RN and CPA out of U.B. One can take care of me , the other my finances !
  7. That's why ,I liked canoe trips can bring a lot,of gear. Food, booze , shotguns ( pretty much standard in Grizzly country ) . Portage sucked though . We'd bring steaks and potatoes for the first night , fishing gear, guns totes full of food. Ran out of food once on the Missinaibi River in Ontario, that kinda sucked we really went to light depending on fish after that we went heavy . The Missinaibi claims a few life's a year . Hell of a first canoe trip.... the Yukon River is a really boring River , mostly flat, but rich in history and many old mines and camps and such along the river . No need to go that far unless you want the remoteness and history . As far as Rapids and good rivers , Ontario has much to,offer , and close !
  8. Well a 46er! Tip,of the hat ! That's a good idea she should check out the stores out West. Im tossing around the idea of a really remote canoe trip in the AK or Yukon when I turn 60 in a couple years .Been ,many years since I flipped a canoe in a cold River 100 miles from any road, my wife may even foot the bill for that ...... oh and you can see she's into photography , thanks to,that Wooly character for some advice ! Early '80's we backpacked the San Juan MTNs in Colorado outside of Durango . Fun trip my buddy used his Dad's old pack from IDK the '50's ? It was an A frame pack , the frame looked like rebar ! Solid metal about 1/2 inch thick with a canvas bag . One of the straps was broke so,he used doubled up clothes line !!!! We did ten miles a day and it was hard to,keep,up,with him ! We were not really ultra light no,tracers , but that guy could survive anywhere . trailhead pic . And yes we traveled across multiple states with loaded handguns .... ah youth , young and dumb.
  9. Both mine graduated from UB. My advice is make your reservations well ahead of time, most times we went out to eat there so did the rest of Erie county it seems , and graduation week end X3 ! And congrats !
  10. I really should check out EMS , I forgot about them . Heres a few pics from past hikes. The Mrs. Is always saying " stay away for the edges !!"
  11. I love REI been to the flagship store in Seattle a few times, they were to build one here, don't know what Happened . Ya hard to,order clothes, boots and packs online . She's set with boots and clothes needs GOOD rain gear and a new day pack that fits a women's frame . In May she'll be hiking in Oregon and Wash. State , she has friends there and has hiked there before. July her and two friends will be in Montana hiking in and around Glacier National Park . Day hikes only. But when you consider that 80% of back country search and rescues are for day hikers , you can understand the importance of skills and gear. Most of those are for tender foots who just set off without telling anyone where they are going and when they'll be back, have next to no gear or knowledge . Agree clothes are your first line "shelter " rain gear a must as are good broken in boots She also has a sil tarp and cordage . Those puppies are not cheap, I bought her one for $100, but it's a very packable and provides shelter for two I ve backspaced and canoed all, over North America , from the Yukon to the ADK's . I like to think I've taught her some skills, and we'll be out in my hunting woods, rigging the trap and making fires soon . Shes a RN and has some med skills, although not wilderness based. I work as a FF and emt, So I have a lot of first on scene treatment of injuries where as hers is after they're stabilized and in the hospital . Thanks for the thought out reply and gear company list .
  12. Our oldest daughter has really gotten into hiking , and has two trips planned for out West this summer . She needs some new gear, a new day pack with hydration , rain gear and some odds and ends . I'm far from impressed with the selections in Rochester' s stores, limited day packs even fewer women's packs and so on . I really wish they'd build that REI store here soon . So before we make the run to Auburn, if there are any hikers , backpackers here who,are familiar with their selection , any help would be appreciated.
  13. Elmo , the grand jury is made up of I believe 23 people , you only need a majority of IIRC somewhere around 18 to send a defendant to trial. We had " one guy" who every time he raised his hand or spoke , 22 people rolled their eyes or face palmed . Fortunately 22-1 was enough or many would never had gone to trail.
  14. At the firehouse we'd say , " ya that's nice now what's for dinner ?" But we're asses .
  15. Thanks, hardly been out this year , was getting all set then that snow storm came ! Perhaps this week ,I know I should grid search some green fields, but I find that boring, I guess that would change if I scored big .... Honestly Im good for about a two hour walk that's it .
  16. Happy Birthday ! 21 lol , I turned 58 yesterday , which isn't all that bad either .
  17. Just really started shed hunting last few years, oh I've found them prior but when just out moving stands and such. Last year I found 7 or 8, in 12-15 hours of walking . I walk maybe two hours each time. All on farm land , mostly walking hedgerows between crop fields and thickets .
  18. Ladders and hang on's with sticks. I prefer Lone Wolf and Muddy hang ons. My ladders tend to be small cheap ones, although I've been very happy with a large 17 Field and Stream one . I like to,place my ladders in triple trunk trees . I gotta say as I use ladders more and more I'm amazed that the deer don't pick me out any more often then when I was much higher in my climber or hang ons . My Lone Wolf climber just gathers dust now. I'm pushing 60 I just prefer the ease of walking in and a simple climb up and sit down.
  19. Some sort of sea food dish, it was very good!

Three Heads , Scotch Ale. My daughters are taking me out for my B Day!
  21. The cops tell the judge. Say you're eating out and your cover garment rises up and someone calls, you've not broken the law . Or in the case of a friend many years ago, a road rager blocked his exit in parking lot he was with his wife as two guys got out , and each went up to a different door pulling on the handles. They then saw his gun he had placed on his lap and left. THEY called the cops ! See they had been through the system and knew the first person to call is the " victim". Take note of that ! The judge who signed his permit ordered a hearing , and grilled him on if he was on his way target shooting and so on. Ive responded to many mva's where an injured person wanted to know if he could bring his gun to the hospital , if not what could he do with it ? Some people when they get stopped for a moving violation tell the officer that they are armed, they don't want to reach for a wallet and expose the gun. Or the officer asks , " Any guns in the car ?" You can lie I guess . i always chuckle at the time after being stopped , my wife opened the glove box where I had placed my Glock ( coming back from Old forge , did not plan on stopping so I'd did not holster it ). I should have yelled ,"she's got a gun !!
  22. Ya, A place I'd never live if you tripled my pay. No offense I have a lot of respect for anyone that lives there and goes through all the hassle to hunt . But it is not for me . When I spent a month going to FDNY 's " flips" school , I felt so sorry for those guys .
  23. IN NYS there are two, types , premise and carry. I don't know one person who applied for premise . As far as restrictions placed on carry permits , they are administrative only. They carry no,weight in law. If you somehow got caught carrying your gun say out to,dinner , but it was stamped "hunting and target shooting only" you have not broken any law . The judge who put those silly restrictions however will revoke it .
  24. Winter home . One can always hunt any state they wish, my buddies are pressuring me to come hunt with them in Montana again, I can do that for less then the taxes on many guys camps or leases .
