Sorry I missed this first time around... Life member here. Funny thread really. A $600 suit is a rather cheap one...... But what really gets me is the " no sporting use, hunting use" stuff. Well OK the 2nd Amen. is not about those , so whats your point ? Yes i don't agree 100 % with them, but I have yet to find anyone or thing I agree 100% with including my wife, but she and the NRA are the best Ive found .

Advances in robotics - helps firefighter walk again
Nomad replied to Fantail's topic in General Chit Chat
Thanks for posting this Fantail ! I'm a FF in Roch. and we used to go to Detroits FF bowling Tourniment for years. Detroit hands down not even close catches more fires then any dept. in the U.S. -
Not a football fan, but the the sister of the Giants head coach bought her lot from my father in law and her husband used to shoot on my range behind their house. He would tell me stuff about this player and that player.... I never told him i had know idea who he was talking about.

Hum looks interesting, but not for me. I do wear bi-focals, and I shoot right eyed which is not my master eye and my far weaker eye... But I shoot nice tight groups just fine . As long as I can see the pin and put it on the part of the deer I want it does not matter if the deer is clear. If it came down to it I'd learn Kentucky windage .

GUNOWNERS BEWARE OF NYC
Nomad replied to wooffer's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Life NRA member here,NYS permit 30 years Utah and Florida permits as well, I'm good in 38 states but not NYC......But then have zero interest in going there again. The thing is in those other 37 states the burden falls upon ME to know and follow their laws of where I can carry, whether I have to tell a cop on a traffic stop and so on . -
Lansky and the like are good, and most will be happy with them. Some of the issues are clamping the knife in the dead center of the jig each time and with long blades the angle of the bevel will change as the rod slides out farther and on wider blades the angle won't be what the guide says, but that is often off on lanskys anyways... But many will never notice and since their edges have not been sharp since it left the factory their happy. For hard core knife guys many end up sooner or later with an Edge Pro. http://www.edgeproin...-Pro-System-c3/ Yep pricey, but when you slice free hanging toilet paper or shave letters off the face of newspaper you'll have a priceless grin ! Just watched the Work sharp you tubes seems nice , factories and makers often use slack belts to sharpen same idea here may pick one up to play with.

For some reason I don't have permission to edit my post http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/content.php will answer all your light questions and then some. Ya I know candlepower..

Cree leds are very good many of my lights have them. I have a 2 cell (cr123a) light that puts out 750 lumans it'll fit in my pocket and light up an object 200 yards away in my neighborhood and much farther out in a dark field. "Candle power" is more of a marketing term then measure of light out put. But then again one needs to know if its mesured at the led or out the front which is the true usable figure . Then again throw or wide beam ? a 200 luman light designed for throw will light much further then a 200 luman flood one. I'll add a link later gotta go now

Mechanical or fixed broadheads?
Nomad replied to Forest Hunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Myself I love fixed cut on contacts. Fly the same as my field points as any head should. I feel the deer feel the impact much less with cut on contact, about half of my deer run or jump a few steps and stop and look around.... fall over. Most years my tracking distance is zero as i watch them fall/ -
Ok for the best answer, it comes from your local DA's office. Not a cop you know or a web page. That said,I'm a knife guy who's on many knife forums and this comes up often. First, all bets are off for NYC, and any other town or city can make a more restrictive law as well. For NYS in general, the big no no's are double edge and automatics. As far as blade length we have no limit, but that does not mean one won't be asked to leave a store or get "looks" or stopped because of it. I work for a city FD we used to have a guy walk around the city known as the Sheik , he wore a full lenght sword..... Some cops think a butter fly knife is illegal here, which it isn't yet you still may have to go to court over it.Knife laws can confuse many and the fact that so many in L.E. and the courts don't know the differant types of knives or the laws is common place. In NYC right now there are lawsuits over the cities raids of stores that were selling legal knives who ended up getting arrested for it. you SHOULD be ok with any length, but a call to your DA's office is in order.

What is the reason for owning a firearm that holds more then 5 rounds?.
Nomad replied to Gthphtm's topic in General Chit Chat
Well I just got in from walking the dog around the neighborhood. The gun in the pocket of my Carhart jacket held only 5 rounds but thankfully I did not " need" any of them. Although I often prefer to have one that holds many more ,as they area and distance to my home change. Heck as far as free speech the right of the press etc. I'm sure the framers could not see much past the quill pen or a manual press. Today I have a lap top and the internet. Why do we need that ? I'd be happy writting on the back of a shovel with a hunk of coal..... Larry 302 LIFE MEMBER NRA. -
Ants, don't lose that knife ! I have a Scrade lb7 (110 clone) that I've had since the 70's,gutted my first buck and traveled all over N.America with me,I lost it or a few days once. Now its in my safe. Doc. I've got nothing against big blades, trust me I tend to carry them a lot. But I dress my deer with the 2 inch blade of my slip joint. A Dr. will take a body apart with a smaller one then that. Heck my daughter did that in her Gross anatomy class . If you fellas think the steel on those old military and box store knoves are good, you should try some D2, VG10, sv30, 154cm of late. But then heat treat, edge bevel, and blade grinds ( flat, hollow, semi, concave, convex etc.) are what really make a knife what it is. http://www.ragweedforge.com/grind.html http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=bio.paulBos#

I love to work out, mostly www.crossfit.com , I also am into knives collecting, reading and writting about,I like to shoot on my range with my crew from work. In the summer I water ski as much as I can,at 52 I like to think I'm still one of the better slalom skiers on the bay . I have a rockhead er i mean Beagle that i walk everyday, love to knock around the woods with him . I used to camp and canoe a fair amount, did the Yukon river, and a few in BC,Ontario,Quebec etc. Maybe again someday.....

Traditional bow on the ground,my hats off to those that can pull it off! I find a handgun quite easy. Mine are all open sights revolvers too. My 4 inch .357 I group very well out to 50 yards my 8 inch DW .44 mag even further .

My BPS is a 12 ga smooth bore, it shoots flat to 75 yards with Federal truballs and I dropped a buck in its tracks at 100 yards this year ,held a little high and hit where I held.... I shoot at least 50 -100 slugs prior to the season. Hope you get it grouping well .

Rochester GUn show at the Dome
Nomad replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in NY Hunting Calendar / Events
Darn i'd love to go, but we leave on vacation Sat. I always thought a forum meet and greet before for breakfast would be cool. We in the Roch. area should do this sometime ! Myself I know I don't come across on this forum the way i want to most times, not the best with the written word . The show i go for old ball stuff, in the past a knife dealer from NJ. named Phil used to come, he had many top name knives we can't get locally, that was bad for my wallet ! He was not found of the unknown winter up here so here so he stopped coming. I did get some sweet zombie targets last year ! Enjoy the show boys. My neighbor makes an unbelievable living selling, bags, dental picks, cords and cheap stuff at these shows. -
I'm a "craft" beer guy for the most part. Tonight Dodfish Head....8 % ! I've been trying whiskey the last year or so, right now I'm a fan of Bushmill on the rocks ... but this can lead to trouble I've found ! But i'm open to suggestions !

LOL. ya I don't own a digital camera... I use my kids when they are home from college, then I can't figure how to post them..... Give me a month to figure out some family matters, go on our cruise , come home take down my stands, then I'll learn some camera skills and do some knife threads ! Nice to see another knife guy around here, sweet FB . Oh btw I'm going to light up a stick now myself, knives, cigars and hunting your cut from the same jib .

Hum I'm a knife guy. That is i get 3 knife mags, have a few thousand posts on knife forums, was in Blade mag. 3 times and wrote a knife artical for Tactical Gear. I have to many to count from productions to customs. As I type this i have in my pocket a Strider RW 1 folder that cost more then a 870, and I had another maker custom grind the blade, more to my liking. My normal EDC is a Hinderer XM 18. he has not taken orders for this knife in 3 years or more ,if you could get one you could sell it on ebay in minutes for a couple hundred profit. I gut my deer with an Old Timer carbon steel Stockman that I paid ten bucks for used at a gun show, go figure.... I always have a Spyderco cliped on me hunting for any emergency use that may arise. i have a couple of Puma Whitehunters I'm fond of including a pre '64 ( the most sought after ones ,before a steel change). I also from time to time break out my Marbles from 1,911 for those times when I want to go old school in the woods. buck 110 is a fine knife. But many knives are still made in the USA ! true many US companies have some made over seas, those from Japan's Seki city are top shelf blades. for a couple hundred bucks one can have a fixed blade custom made by a US maker. One that will out live you and be passed down for generations

I agree its safer then people think. My thoughts were always like Steves however, its the non participant injury that does us in,like the guy who "unloaded" his ML by firing it into the air and hitting a woman a mile away, or the odd house that takes a round. Then I look at getting shot by a 12ga or 30.06 and falling 15 feet out of a stand vs. a pulled muscle, bruse or twisted ankle thats a commen injury in those other sports . Another thing that muddys the waters is any organized sport is going to treat and report all injuries. I was a medic for football and cheerleading, any little thing gets recorded and many are sent to be checked out ,if you twist an ankle a field during deer season it does not get reported ,only those trips to ER. If I remember right we had 3 folks die from tree stand falls around here this year,I'm not sure if all others combined add to that . I think I also read that the DEC only counts firearm injuries in its "accident" rate not falls or heart attacks like Doc's neighbor of years back, so who knows what and how things are reported . Ya I feel its pretty safe over all just think its kinda like comparing injuries of office workers VS loggers or crab fishermen. One gets a paper cut one dies .

Thanks Elmer. I think I'm an average hunter with a good spot and lots of free time, two of the biggest factors imho. And a poor skills whens it come to the written word ....
