    172 buck

My new guy at work showed me a pic. of his Dads buck from this year, I can't post it because its just on my cell and I have no idea how and won't without his Dads OK anyway. But it was scored at the Rochester Sportsmans show last week end. 172 ! I know this post sucks without pics! But it may give us hope that we too may run across one someday. This is not a guy who plans all his time around deer season or ever had one mounted before. Oh and Doc not to far away....
  2. To be legal plastic apples and apple cover scent. again can't get my pic to post...
  3. Ted gets all the face time he does because he's not some boring guy in a suit, that nobody would watch or talk about for going on ten pages here alone. I met him last time he played Roch. toured his stage looked at his guitars, nice guy. I'll add this at work sometimes between calls I'll turn on the "hunting channel"( which the non hunters on the job call the "whispering channel"), nobody watches or cares much, in fact they mostly mock them till Ted's show is on that they'll watch, everyone else they see is a hick to them and boring as golf...... As for the hunting shows you'll see more then a few big country artists on them.ZERO of which I've ever saw take a strong stand on the 2nd Amen. they won't risk ticket or album sales. I say thanks Ted !
  4. 9 pages... Seems like Ted knows what he's doing.
  5. Nice job ! On the knife forums its called "pimping". I have a cloth wheel i load up for polishing myself,as you may know its the most dangerous tool in a knife makers shop, take great care doing blades on it. Some guys make good money pimping knives. It can be a sickness for some of us. I took a $500 dollar knife I got from one maker and sent if off to a pimper for more work......
  6. Myself I wear it . I don't enter the turkey woods with out some either. I wear more in deer/gun season because the slugs go farther then shot used in most other seasons, there are a ton more guys hunting then, they move around more and i feel there are far more ya- whos out then and I'd like every edge I can get. Me I like to be seen .I wear an orange hat walking my dog, at night add a headlamp and 750 luman handlight . On the job a bright reflective vest is mandated when working a scene on a road unless we have it shut right down to traffic. Is a vest going to stop an out of control car? No, but if it helps someone pick me out just a few seconds earlier thats a plus maybe they steer away or brakein time. I could not count the ways I,ve seen folks killed, shot, stabbed, burned up, OD'd, falls,,crushed, pinned caught , hit by countless cars, busses, trains, boats. If your plan is to count on the other guy to be safe Ha Ha HA jokes on you . Part of my plan is to help out the other guy ,"oh look I see someone down range,or in the road, yes some are beyond help , I'll still try.
  7. I have the LCP for what it is its fine. 3 of us got them when the first came out mine handles most ammo fine, one HP did not work to well but Critical Defense works 100 % I have a few hundred rounds through mine. Over the last 30 some years I've carried most days, from L frame S&W's to Glocks,38 snubbies and on and on. Taking the dog for a run now (ill be on my bike) 38 snub in back pocket . LCP is my Light weight shorts pocket gun for around the house or say in camo pants pocket, when I'm not supposed to have a gun (although most guys I know do...) My carry guns are a .40 glock,38 snub or sometimes LCP. The LCP or any 380 would not be MY first choice for a main carry gun, like some have said 9mm like Kahr are not much bigger, even an air weight snub with +p's can be hidden in most places a 380 could. That said I like my LCP , many of the lcp's work better "wet" btw. FWIW I've plugged up at least 150 maybe 200 bullet wounds, from .22 to 12 ga slugs. My thoughts .Shot placement #1, big holes #2,how tough the guy is or high may trump 1 and 2....
  8. I have had the Spyderco tri angle sharpener for too many years to remember. If you don't let your blades get real dull,or don't want to re-profile its a very good system. One can also use a sharpie to color in the edge , so you can see if your hitting the edge to much or little on any system.
  9. I'm sure somebody does, but i don't think it's to good an idea. A well placed shot at close range but still iffy, I would not use one. I've used an 8 inch Dan Wesson .44 mag that drops 'em fine, 240 gr jhp. I use a 4 inch Smith .357 as a back up to my ML (gun season) or deer right under me. I like 158 swc or jsp, Buffalo Bore hard cast 180's as well. This year in shotgun I spined a deer with the 12ga. i walked up and put a .357 Hydra-shock jhp in the ribs,no exit wound. this is a "carry" load for me not hunting load, just happened to be my choice for the day .
  10. Me too. I do like seeing the sun come up and the woods come alive ! A big thermos of coffee and the start of a new day. I do get sick of the early mornings, bugs and warm woods. May is time for waterskiing on the Bay ! Now that I get up early for,GLASS.
  11. Not much of a turkey hunter, but i do ok in the woods. Ive got 30-40 birds most years in my woods, they tend to roost in 2 basic spots. In bow season I see them roost almost every night in the same trees. If I feel like getting up early thats where i go,but a friend has great luck (Tom every year) walking into the woods 8 or 9 in the morning, so i often do that too. My best bird 9 1/2 beard i walked in at 9:00 was back home with him at 9:45. Way better then getting up at 4:00.
  12. There are tons of USA made knives.Benchmade,Spyderco,Kersaw,Buck,Case,Tops,Ontario,Esee,ZT, Chris Reeve,Strider ,Ka-bar,SOG,Bark River are a few off the top of my head that either make some or their whole line in the U.S.A. Most box stores won't carry many as thats not what the customers want. Then we have tons of custom makers who can make you a top of the line handmade that can be passed down a few generations . As well as guaranted for life of the knife, sharpend for free and so on . But this costs money, and most guys want cheap disposable junk, which over time costs more..... Same with clothes you won't find Beagle Wear or Filson in Dicks, both U.S.A.made top of the line, with price to match but it'll out last you, so which really costs more. Buy the best cry once.
  13. Well I never had L.I. deer and can't really pin down just what "upstate" is other then perhaps all the state not LI and NYC..... Which leaves everything from mountains to farms, to rocky not so good farms, to vinyards of the Finger Lakes, to suburban bush eating deer, and on and on. Our ag deer full of corn, beans, wheat and hay taste quite good though. I agree its prep work and cooking to a large part .
  14. Does she live On East Ave in Roch.? I cover that part of the city and we got a call to a house that had many old mounts in the basement laying on the floor dirty and coverd in junk. After asking i was told they were Geo. Eastmans from back in the day. I wanted to make an offer but since I was there on a call I figured it best not to. A short time later we got another call to the house but the mounts were gone. I was told a lady taxiderimist from further down East ave. got them.
  15. Like I said, just weird, does not prove anything. My point was an easy winter and we're finding more dead deer at least for the little we've been out, which based on past years is not the norm.I understand animals die .... Going to pull more stands and walk around with my 25.20 thursday i hope thats it.
  16. My kids and my money go to the University at Buffalo...... 2 daughters, one in a medical field now doing a cardiac rehab internship (3.8 GPA) The other in finance, with a 4.0 last semester. I must have a smart Mailman......
  17. I've found 4 so far, the bad part is they were attached to the heads of dead bucks !
  18. I have my Dads hot seat, most be 30 years old ! I take a piece on closed cell foam from a sleeping pad and cut it to fit inside my daypack. This pads my back from tree steps and other hard objects in the pack and I always have something to sit on this way.
  19. Its been a great winter for the deer. The weird thing is this week I got back out in the woods, and first I find a dead 7 pt in my woods that was not there in gun season. I email a friend he was out the same day and found 3 dead deer including one big body buck who just cast his antlers. Then a guy on here PM's me he found one. Then I walk my dog here in webster and find a pretty fresh dead 9pt. My friends 3 were also in Webster, near the lake. yes this doesn't prove anything, just weird.Oh well I'll be out Tues. hope I don't find anymore on my spot...
  20. Steve the guy in the video is not about building big non functional muscles, he is or was a boxer..... Climbering 2 ropes wearing 50 pounds of vests with just your hands is not a bodybuilder movement lol. Nor db snatches or any of the movements, those are athletic movements, power and core... and yes dragging 150 pounds around the block would be great training for hunters. train like ya fight. Ross was experimenting with mass at that time though, but he's an athlete and trainer of athletes.
  21. No great shed hunter but I find them just walking my dog in the woods around town. I also walk my hunting area in crop fields they feed in this time of year. Found 2 just in gun season this year as well and a dead 7 pt yesterday, while dropping my stands . I also walk areas along side the expressways,590 and 104. here you'll find deer that were hit and ran off a bit. See spots where deer are dead along side the road all the time ? Well get into the spots along the road there, because many run off a bit.....
  22. Geno, yes its a workout thats for sure. If one looks at the sites main page thats what I follow, plus the crossfit warm up and a finisher I add. Its hard to get a feel for it by a few posted workouts, one needs amonth of them to get a true picture. The classes that one sees are mostly the 20 or 30 minutes rounds of a few movements. Following the main page one may have days of just say 5x5 squats, like say a heavy training day for a powerlifter. Hard to make that a class though, and things like overhead squats many find to hard. The bad thing is xfit is becoming main stream, Rebock crossfit games etc. I like being the odd ball not following fads... www.rosstraining.com is another sick site check out his videos on it. check out htis one. Well time for another Magic hat circus boy beer.....
  23. Been going to gyms since late '70's. Best move i made was giving up "bodybuilding" type work outs for more functional training. I do www.crossfit.com lots of oly lifting, powerlifting, sprints, jumps, chins, dips, kettlebells, non stop rounds of training on your feet just like in life. Don't use machines become one !
