  1. Also I think you may be underestimating opening up the ground on the highline. The growth where I did mine was thick and a pain in the ass to peel away, even with a tractor. My set up was pretty similar to yours. Highline with a huge ridge with a swamp at the bottom of that ridge.
  2. All I did was take the bucket of the tractor and drug the grass away, hit it with a rake, then threw the seed down with some fertilizer. The oats took off like crazy and grew nice and high (thick too). The clover I threw down didn't fare too well. I would go with some forage oats if you are just trying to do a quick plot to get deer stopping by. Especially because it sticks out through the snow late season.
  3. I scraped and raked the surface of the ground on some power lines, then threw down buck forage oats. Lasted well into the winter and you could see where the deer were eating big chunks out of it. Used to walk out of the woods to see them eating out of it late morning.
  4. I love fishing streams for trout. I grew up doing it with my uncle. I remember a few years back he took me to this old bridge over a stream that didn't look like it would hold much fish. Real small. He told me it was his secret spot and to throw a worm on a hook and toss it under the bridge. I must have cast under that thing 15 times thinking it was a waste of time. Then WHAM! Pulled out a beauty 17.5" brown. He smiled and said, "told ya so."
  5. I don't particularly have any interest in listening to you brag and looking at "trophies" you shot in a cage while driving around on top of a truck... Furthermore I don't enjoy reading your little PM's calling other people pu$$ies. You started off fairly well-mannered, looks like you came out of your shell. Now get.
  6. I'll cast the first vote and say this dude has got to go.
  7. This thread makes my head hurt. I don't know how you came up with all that, Trial. But you're good . Is this dude a high fence hunter or what? That's a lot of trophies. Looks like he is damn near the same age through all of those pictures. I don't want to discredit anyone, just saying. Weird,
  8. Just read this figured I would pass it along. Some real dirt bags here. For some reason I don't think the punishment is enough. I would hate to not be able to hunt for 44 years though.. http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/poachers-behind-%e2%80%98grotesque%e2%80%99-deer-kill-videos-given-lifetime-hunting-bans-in-44-states/ar-BBpo6VG?li=BBnbcA1&ocid=iehp
  9. I agree with Doc! that buck looks niiiice.
  10. Just apologize, accept the fact you made yourself out to be a troll and move on...
  11. Get after 'em! I haven't been out after the bunnies yet this year. Been out for coyotes a couple times. I need to plan an outing this weekend I suppose.
  12. Great post! There are some stud bucks right there!
  13. You can tell that one from WNY is the same deer due to the line on the nose. Goes narrow and to a point. Your second deer up top has a distinguished little curvature in the line on its nose. That would be a good way to tell I guess.
  14. I got some Scentlok pants, a real nice cold weather jacket that splits into layers, some wool socks, a wool beanie and some under armour 4.0 base layers! My hunting Christmas list was fulfilled. Very thankful!
  15. I heard from a buddy, that they found 30 dead deer up in the fairways/woods of Bluestone golf course in Oxford, NY. Just laid up and died during the winter. On another property he hunts he found 15 or so. Last winter was definitely a brutal one. That's why I'm not too upset about it being warm out this time of year. I think the deer deserve a break.
  16. I'm not saying I hate NY, as I said in the original post, I love hunting here. I spend a lot of time in these woods. I do think we could manage deer a little better though. Get the numbers up. Let them grow a little. I'll do my part in letting the small ones pass and have the chance to grow into a nice buck. You guys keep shooting all the year and a half olds so, "not everyone can get a trophy".
  17. I've been doing a lot of research on Iowa and it looks like they have it pretty well figured out. I'm going to start putting in for preference points this year, hopefully in 2-3 years I will be able to make it happen. To go out there during the rut and see a lot more mature bucks would be well worth it for me. Let alone actually connecting on one. It seems they are all on the side of letting them grow. And I've read up on the cost of their NR tags being expensive, but it insures that serious big buck hunters are the ones purchasing them from out of state. Kind of wish NY would take some lessons. We have great bucks that "make it through", but could have a lot more. I know others have different opinions but that is mine.

  19. This was for 2014 but pretty interesting. I love hunting up here but I really would like to take a trip out to Iowa to see the action that takes place in their woods. The land of big, mature deer. And lots of them.
  20. It just seems as if the deer are really grouping up. If you see one doe, you will see a ton of them. I haven't seen squat either. Saw one lone buck cruising Saturday. Only deer all weekend. My buddy was walking out of the woods and kicked up 9 doe in one spot and 4 in the other. My uncle was sitting and he had 3 herds come across him from all different directions. Said there must have been 30 deer all together. No horns of course. I wonder if it's an instinctual thing to group up for safety, or after the rut. Seems every year they tend to do that.
  21. I'm in Chenango County if you need someone to look after it. Oxford/McDonough area.
