  1. Sorry for your loss Goosifer. Sometimes it's tougher to lose a dog than you ever thought possible. They are a part of your life for so long it is almost the same as losing a family member. One thing is that you always have lots of fond memories to draw on. My family has lost two in the last 5 years and it was tough to go through.
  2. The real t chill, they are the exact ones. I am 5'6" and the small fit me perfect, nice and tight, but big enough if that helps at all for a size guess. The weather I don't think will make them soak through. I have pulled fish from the hole and not had them soak through. I like them because you can still use your hands without a bunch of bulkiness, and if your hands start to get cold, just put them in your pocket or muff with the handwarmers.
  3. Clam Ice Gear makes a thin, knit glove that works pretty well. I can't remember what model they are, but you will be able to tell when you see them. They are waterproof to an extent, reasonably warm, you can still get heat from handwarmers if needed, and you can shoot with them on. I remember they were pretty pricey, but I am glad I bought them.

    My deer

Good for you Paula. Glad you had some success early in the season. Maybe you can double up with a buck now! Good to see another woman shooting a .270 for deer. A lot of girls and women have used my .270 to shoot deer for the youth season and gun season. None have had issues with the recoil, and never had an issue with stopping power.
  5. Like crossbows, antler restrictions are a touchy subject. Both sides have strong opinions on the subject. You have every right to state your case and others have the right to back you up or disagree. It would be simple if everyone would do it voluntarily, but with time so valuable for a lot of people now a days, it doesn't always work out. you are at the mercy of your neighbors to some extent. Wait until you start to see a few 2 1/2 year old 8 or 10s, and harvest a few. Then, you get to thinking about letting them go another year, and the neighbors shoot them because they have never gotten a nice buck like that. That's when it really starts to punch you in the guts. It is fun as hell, but it is a slow and sometimes painful process. Good luck and I hope it all works out for you.
  6. Good for him and I am sure it is nice to have a student to take in some of your knowledge of shooting. Congrats to you also as I know it is always fun to be around for a first buck.
  7. All you can do is keep letting them walk. they don't all get shot. When you can show neighboring properties some nicer bucks you kill on your land, it can spread voluntarily. In my eyes, the best thing you can do is make some of your property as thick as possible for cover to hold the deer there as much as possible. The rut throws everything out the window, but it is a good start. And, don't be upset when your neighbor shoots the nice buck you have seen all summer. Lots of times, this will be the thing that gets them wanting to let the younger ones walk. But, and it's a big but, some hunters are perfectly happy with the first buck they see, and some will never shoot a doe. That's how they enjoy deer season, and why take their joy away because it is different from yours. It is frustrating at times, but remember to enjoy yourself. It beats the hell out of being at work.
  8. I have hunted on a friend's land in 4 O this weekend with a work buddy that has only been hunting for three years. After 3 years and $30, my buddy finally drew a doe tag. Unfortunately, he hasn't seen a deer in the first two days. Yesterday, I was in deer pretty good in the morning, so I sat him there this morning. i moved over in the area he was sitting yesterday. Wouldn't you know it, I'm in deer again, he sees nothing. He has only shot one small buck in his hunting career so he is already getting nervous because he has to work the next three days. I told him it is a long season, and we will get him on a deer or two. Like other areas, very few hunters, and even fewer shots. I believe we have only heard one shot even remotely in our area. Sad state the way hunting is just fading away more every year. If you can get a man or woman in the woods and show them a little success, they are often hooked for life. Seems tougher every year to find new hunters. Congratulations to all the hunters whether they got big bucks, little bucks, or does. Enjoy the time in the woods and enjoy the fun with friends and family.
  9. 4:30 for me and out the door by 5:30. Gonna be a tough walk in as I received word that almost a foot of snow fell on the hill I am hunting. All I will do is still hunt my way to my stand if I have to. If I rush, all that will happen is I will sweat and end up stinking and cold.
  10. I guess I will join the minority. I like it about 25 and crunchy as hell. I can get them spotted without the snow and like to be able to hear them coming.
  11. Hang in there Phade. I have a buddy that finally saw his target buck from the stand after almost two full seasons. Literally 100's of pictures, and never saw him from stand until he killed him at 15 yards Saturday. For the second year in a row, I don't even have a target buck. Lots of bucks, nothing for me, but I have little streaks like this. Plus I never know when a traveller will show up.
  12. Great buck and even better that you had a partner to help you out and enjoy it with you.
  13. That is a nice picture. It would make a nice Christmas present in a nice frame since it is the first year in the woods as husband and wife.
  14. You guys are great doing this. I just can't do it. I have a hell of a time taking a selfie as it is. If someone was in my stand today, they could of at least had an 8 and a 6 in the picture, and maybe a spike too. I just don't want deer looking up, and by the time I had my head and the deer in the same frame, they sure the hell would be looking up!! Or, I would be hanging from my harness!!
  15. You forgot the mountain lion! Buckmaster7600 is the winner in my eyes as I have never even seen a live moose. It will take something real special to beat that one.
  16. Finally enough leaves have come off that my buddy and I hit a big oak ridge on the 4F side of the river in New Berlin this morning. Had a lot of does with fawns come through early munching on acorns. Around 10:00 I had two little bucks and a decent 8 point come by at 15 yards. I said to myself that you guys better not go up the ridge higher because my buddy will definitely shoot the 8 point. About a half hour later I heard crashing coming from above me and here comes the same three bucks running back by me. None of them are bleeding so I figured he spooked them some how. Come to find out, he shot at the 8 at 10 yards, and skewered a maple sapling a little over an inch thick. I laughed like hell because he did the same thing about 25 years ago. Just like the last time, it was the only branch or sapling between him and the deer. Not much rut sign at all, the does still had their fawns, and the bucks were still together. Just not ready there yet. Going to be the same as most years for us I think, with the last week of bow and the start of gun being the peak chase stage.
  17. Must have been the night for it because I was out on the back porch with coffee and a Isla del Sol cigar myself.
  18. That is a nice one. Probably will stay in hiding until the wife goes out and shoots him just to put you behind 8 ball!
  19. My buddy and I both filled doe tags today for the land owner today on the horse farm we have been hunting a little this year. Both were easy 20-25 yard shots and clean pass thrus with blood trails easy to follow even though it was misting and raining. We even had time to get them skinned, quartered, and put up to finish cutting up this week. Farm owner was happy as he would just as soon every deer be gone off his land.
  20. I'm right there with you Rattler. My area has had a couple solid frosts, but the leaves are still green on all the ridges I have hunted. Some hillsides are bare of leaves, but the other side of the valleys are still barely changing.
  21. I came out cheap with just a few days of labor on a couple farms. Not that they asked me to, but just to make sure they know I appreciate being able to hunt on their properties. Other than that, just gas and tags. Like others, I have enough clothes and hardware for years.
  22. As usual, I haven't even started hitting the woods very hard yet. I have only sat 3 times , and none of them were all day sits. After next week I will hit it hard and hope for some cool, dry weather. I can almost always get on deer. It has been a struggle the last couple years to get on a nice buck. I have done my part for the farms, and filled a couple doe tags instead. My one farm has a couple nice bucks on it at times, now all I can do is put in some quality time and try to close the deal.
  23. That is a huge accomplishment. Congratulations to all involved.
  24. This is a great one. I know plenty of people scared of the dark and I usually see a few lighting up the fields and woods during hunting season.
  25. Post this request in the small game section too. Someone may be able to set you up with some pheasant feathers as well.
