  1. I just got back from a slow walk...all tracks are from night and it's a super highway from my plot to the sanctuary and back. 2 very big lone tracks coming from lower swamp, right to the , do I need to say it? I interrupted a fisher kill...it had a bunny and was dragging it through the snow toward the road, headed for the Norway plantation....looks like it snapped it's back...It will be back I'm sure to get it's prize....
  2. I avoid ever wrapping in plastic... just quarter and place in cooler with the frozen water bottles around it... BTW I got news...but won't count chickens until hatched ...this is in our future...Not same one, used, but big enough for two whole with legs cut off...Last time I got excited they sold the walk ins...hhmmm http://www.homedepot.com/p/Maxx-Cold-X-Series-49-cu-ft-Double-Door-Commercial-Reach-in-Upright-Refrigerator-in-Stainless-Steel-MXCR-49FD/203353626?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal1_rr-_-206792398-_-203353626-_-N
  3. Yes you and Shawnhu as well......BTW roasted brussels a favorite of mine...
  4. Whats up? I watch this thread and see very little green veggies...or any veggies really..You guys don't like them? I have a rule in meal planning ...meat/protein, green, yellow and a starch Potatoe/rice/pasta...The only thing I will ommit on occasion is the yellow...Wish I had the other day...my finger won't be hurting right now..lol
  5. OMG safety over publicity...The managers should have put a call into the police the moment ANY THREATS were made. Besides the fact no one knew if these crazy trash had any concealed weapons on them. Now they need to worry if these characters will return...perhaps on a busier close to Christmas day...Good no was was hurt. BTW from just what you described...police now consider assault. Verbal threats that would make a person feel legitimately threatened
  6. Go to Tractor supply and buy a bag or two of feed corn...It grows great...costs 9 bucks a bag...use that money saved on fertilizer.
  7. Pulled venison in a light mushroom sauce over garlic mashed potatoes. Fresh cooked broccoli, wax beans.
  8. I've been talking about this for a few days...temps dropping and we got at least 3inches of snow...they will be putting on the feed bag as it were. My doe didn't have as much fat stored as I expected her to have when skinning....not sure if she was ran a lot during her cycle..but they sure had enough to eat this summer I expected much more on her.
  9. If you don't use water authority or DEC ..Musser Nursery in PA is a great source...they have a catalog and on line.
  10. It could be just location..reds line farm fields..but also the reds have less height to them. There are a bit more openings amongst them and more Sun reaches the ground. Golden rod patches grow in and around them. The Norway's are darker and moiture soils are in them. Less Sun due to height. I happen to know this because I got a tour of the Norway's by the neighbor that owned them and I have retrieval permission from the owner of the one red plantation. I went in to get a 8 pt. That I shot in bow. The deer had spots in the reds they could Sun themselves and both red plantations face south..the Norway's are north west on a slope.
  11. I wasn't out for any of them. I was sedated and with the one at 16 the Dr. Was angry because I was so out of it I couldn't sit up on my own. Thus the 2 nurses at either elbow.I think they shot me with a muscle relaxant as well . Once he finally got the scope started they placed a "bit" that the cable went through in my mouth and laid me on my side. He was smart enough to ask how I was once the bit was in place...Think he understood the reply I managed to grunt out. He wasn't the only unhappn person in the room.
  12. Listen that's what it felt like!..I have what I'm was told is an extremely small throat opening...They have a difficult time getting the scope past the curve and down...One time ,I believe I was 16 , man the Dr was angry and as he was trying, they had me sitting up with a nurse at each elbow..I threw up in his face ...it was really bad..not food but yellow green liquidl..I was in the hospital 3 days.. I'm rather careful to avoid those problems.
  13. I Will not take meds..wedge pillow, several small portions eaten slowly, with lots of water Through out the day....seems to work for me....I hate being scoped First time I was 9 .....back then...They were huge!
  14. A good Buck folding knife and and Old timer folding one...both hold a fine edge and slice like a hot through butter.
  15. Should have worn my goggles...did a slow walk into the snow and wind...A bit brutal . I glassed everywhere, no prints no signs of deer anywhere...I got high and scanned the sanctuary and the neighbors woods and part of gully zip...I figure they are in the pines, east side of hill and or the swamps... glassed part of one swamp ..nothing....sat in the wooden blind just a bit, during worst of it...back to canning sauerkraut... Tomorrow morning should be very good...if the wind isn't a _ _ _ _ _ Hhmmmm
  16. Snowing pretty good and starting to get a bit foggy... finger has me in canning sauerkraut...good a day as any to get it done...phew house stinks!...Think I'll take a slow walk with the shot gun....Need to get that daily walk in...
  17. What are your thoughts on the rather large number of fisher spotted posts across the state....I know we've had them a few years...cams ,personal sightings then finding that dead one this spring. They are great hunters...and love eggs to which all your flushing type birds and turkey are ground nesters, besides their ability to ambush turkey at nite on roost.....We use to have a wonderful Grouse population here and some wild pheasant...now ,the only grouse I ever see or hear are in the worst of the swamp and wild rose there...no pheasant anymore....Turkey have been coming back but I think it's due to a raccoon reduction .... Are there enough trappers to manage an ever increasing population?
  18. Well you have the pictures and hope you got some great ones to frame...
  19. What they pass down to off spring is movement patterns...which is why taking out that herd leader can have a big impact on your hunting land if she was the one teaching the rest to move through your property at good times. When there are many properties and your just one of those with other hunters shooting deer on boarding lands...chances are she will be taken out and early. Then if you have places like Curmudgeon and I ,and I think most do...,you run the risk of a "sanctuary" doe taking the lead...or a doe that had an arrow flung at her unsuccessfully, spooked in the morning or night with movement ...Where the doe are the buck tend to go past mid Oct..The doe I saw during limited shooting hours, were meticulous in how they stayed in heavy brush to move... Genetics no but learned herd behavior yes and it is past down knowledge be it good or bad for hunters. They adapt period.
  20. That is great Congrats...You tanning the hide? .. So all that white he must have been carrying that recessive gene I just HAVE to ask?...See any deformities, was he smaller than you may have thought for the age...hunched back? Really Huntscreek thanks for the share on a good season Kudos! PS ..please don't dis-rail his thread because of my...picking....catch me somewhere else
  21. No but again I believe those are warm deer...When I pull down the hide on a cold deer it tends to catch flesh ,unlike when warm... I have no problems in cold weather with a fresh kill...but thanks for the ideas...I will just use the playtex next time or if I do get another this year skin it as soon as I hang it...then it only takes me about 20 mins start to finish
  22. Sounds like your doe and ours got the same memo...With the new crops this year...I couldn't compete with the farmer fields and the pine plantations next to them... Then you have the sanctuaries and swamps... 200 red oaks that dropped a ton of acorns and our apple trees were loaded...The incentive idea would never work here...the sanctuary ,she'd cut off her right arm before allowing doe hunting The other no doe property had a QDM guy buy right next door...lots of shooting there...so I'm pretty sure they have dug in their heels even more than before......and because of the brown down ,trespasser ,being shot at by the land owners behind and to the north east of the sanctuary... They won't even hunt due to pushing deer to them.....Besides the lay of the land, she can sit on her deck and shoot what ever buck she likes. The lease guys aren't going to say... hey come on in and the land owner is loyal to them. Then you have the guy that had a hunting friend killed on his land, and the farmers that hunt and are sick to death of the trespassing 4wheelers and snowmobiles ripping up his fields...he lines his road frontage with equipment ,round bales and posts with chains...... I'll just have to figure out a new strategy for next year and work on the plans this winter...Because I have seen for the past 3 years doe getting more and more nocturnal...They always have, but with everyone here bow hunting by Oct 7th they are night owls and for the ones not...they are spooky, jumpy and look like snoopy doing his little dance....noses straight up in the air...eyes scanning the tree tops...Deer are the most adaptable animals I think I've ever seen in the wild...just look at suburban buck bedding in yards...doe dropping fawns in parking lots on college campuses. Even in the country..... I talk about and have shown pics of the numerous deer that bed right next to our barking Shepherd kennel...It's a coyote free zone and you can bet they know it. Of course now you have the DEC saying..... we are tightening our laws...Even you back yard bird feeders aren't safe..one warning then a ticket ,Gosh such criminal activity as to trying to enjoy a bird feeder in your back yard...God forbid your neighbor gets a bee in their bonnet over anything...one more angle for back door revenge...lol DEC putting more regulations in place, that we all know they will screw up in implementing. To limit any advantage to deer kills. Do I think it will have a big effect..no, but to some it will just be physiologically limiting..Which I think has a greater impact on kill #'s than people think. All this then saying...... hey please open your lands and yards to us, we need your help... I can hear the collective FY's ringing across the state especially from those non hunting....bird watchers...lol
  23. We took mine at a local gun club and the archery in the next town over at an archery club...mine was the only one where we handed a shot gun and it was purely voluntarily, just 3 or 4 of us shot as I recall.
