  1. Leica CRF 800 (or is it 900?) I've had mine for 6-7 years now? Changed the battery once or twice..................
  2. 33' is the right length of line IIRC for my setups. After making a simple knot at the top, then passing the line around the tree once, then dropping it down and wrapping it around the base of the tree waist high or so you need to tie it off to itself. Those two wraps around the tree and a couple simple knots use up linear feet pretty quick.
  3. I have used Vasoline in the past but you want to use it sparingly. You don't want any residue on your shaft/rest. Your suggestion sounds better!
  4. Heck, I just saw your picture. That's no good....................trust me it's an accident wiating to happen PLUS, as you're stepping onto the stand, you MUST be connected to a lifeline. NO IF, AND'S OR BUTS.
  5. It could get tangled on a wrung, limb, stand etc. A safety line w/prussik knot can easily be used with a ladder stand. BTDT
  6. Some stay on over the year. I know some may have their doubts on that, so did I until I tested one that had a few years in the tree for "aging". I went to my buddy Tom's place and hung one in a tree in his yard. Then I tied/bundled 250lbs of DEAD weight to a carabiner, placed the weight and me in the bucket of his tractor and headed for the sky. With the bucket extended as high as it would go I hooked the carabiner to the prussik, then had Tom slowly dump the bucket while I pushed the dead weight out. It fell with a great ummpffff. Nothing broke, all was well. My "old, skanky" marine grade lines held like a champ as did the carabiner and prussik knot.
  7. If it is a small enough trunk and I have enough of a tag end at the bottom I'll loop the line around the tree two times. It ain't slipping even with MY lard ass on the hook............................. Edit to change the word truck to trunk!
  8. A wise (drunk) old friend once said to me when I was having a terrible run of luck, "Larry, things go like this for a while......THEN they get worse. Sorry to hear of your plight but I STILL don't get MSG so that means NO Sabres games.
  9. The Island is (from what I've been told) a very difficult place to get permission. People guard those spots like gold. Fairly high pressure and limited access means you better own it or have a heck of a tight bond with the landowner. PS, I'm over weight and kind of old so if you find a good spot with room for two, holler.
  10. Smart lady.................the prussik knot is THE coolest thing going. When I first saw it I almost passed out!! What a slick slick knot. Oh yea........people HAVE to know that the tag end at the bottom of the tree MUST be tied off at waist level fairly tight for the knot to slide UP the tree when climbing!!
  11. Hang on stands or ladder?
  12. You shouldn't have to swap to another safety line. As long as the loop around the tree is ABOVE your head, one line should do it.
  13. Figures, seems there's always a glitch.
  14. Can't add anything on the API but I had a Goliath and was happy with it but read about the Treewalker and took the plunge. I couldn't be happier.......... http://www.treewalkertreestands.com/ I have the Pro Mag XL and hope like hell it lasts more than 5 years!!
  15. They can loose an ungodly amount of blood and still live.....................
  16. Shade and ice do wonders for a warm chest cavity. AFTER the hide is off.
  17. I'm not sure of your physical dimensions and age but if nothing else, I'm a good driver. LET'S GO!!!!
  18. One of the most important (and I know you didn't ask for the help) things when field dressing is NOT and I mean NOT spilling stomach contents all over the place. Study that aspect of the process before you need to........I can still mess it up after many deer if I'm rushing and then I pay the price. Dry Heaves sometimes from the smell (puzzy I know) and then having to rinse the chest cavity good are the consequences. Any questions? The folks here will give you an overload of good help in that matter. Shoot straight!
  19. Plastic glass................................ You drinking until you fall or what? Looks like a better than good time, I had a nice Makers Mark Manhattan tonight as I was preparing dinner. Damn they taste good!
  20. Sorry for your loss. I've been in a similar situation twice...........long stories on both but in 1983 my father sold a place in Canadice that was very important and influential in my life. He bought it in 1970 when I was 9. It was very hard getting over that one but I was young and made do with friends in the area and all worked out well. In 1992 my uncle bought some land in Naples then built a cabin and barn in the coming years. That place was sold last summer after many many memories like yours. I could post hundreds of pics of the people, place and things related to it. Life is all about change.........some good/some bad. Carry on my friend!
  21. Well done!! Looking forward to weight AND age..................
  22. What kind of BH? Can they be resharpened or do they have easily (but of course not cheap) blades you can swap out? Sometimes I'll use those dull ones for range time and others times if the aren't monkeyed up TOO bad, I'll sharpen them on a series of DMT diamond stones and reuse them. Only experience will tell you if they are in good enough condition to save. Most of the time for most of the guys/gals, you're better off chucking them in the "used" pile and installing new ones. Luck to you!
