Pre inline days......... Any flinters or PA pilgrimers here......

HA! That reminds me of a good story............(very true also!) One time in PA I had a misfire after my pan powder got a dump of snow from an overhanging pine bough. It was hopeless so I headed back to the truck to get it sorted out. I used my little touch hole pin to clean out the wet stuff as best I could. I dumped a half of pan of 4F in, pulled the hammer back and then yerked on the set trigger. Well..............at the time I was using an old cigar tube to house my pan powder and the stopper was in my mouth, the open tube in my right hand. Yup, you guessed it, a spark jumped INTO the tube and fizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and KBam the tube shot out of my hand and went sailing down the hardpacked, icy forest service road!! It burned my fingerless wool gloves and scared the B Jesus out of me. I don't recall if the pan powder fired up or not............ Just another "you had to be there story"! -
Life just ain't fair sometimes........................ No kids yet?

Yes, I've hunted with a flintlock before but it has been (I could probably check and give an accurate year if I grabbed my journal) quite a few years. I'd guess about 2001 or 2002 since I hunted with it. I killed a doe in a blinding snowstorm in the late season on a hunt in Clarence, point blank shot-head on. Sweet.......... I started out using a flintlock in about 1985. My late friend Wally talked me into buying one from his buddy, a T/C Hawken .50 cal with all the accoutrements for $200 We had lots of fun shooting them in his backyard in those days. The smoke really hung in the air some days, Lets see; 4F for the pan and 3F in the barrel? Once again, I'd have to get into my notes for all the pertinent numbers. We hunted PA almost exclusively in those days. I killed a handful of doe with it during the late season, mostly in McKean County. In NYS I think I only killed one or two....... We used (by law in PA) patched round balls and they shot OK, considering it was open sights too. I have some Maxi Bullets but never used them in NYS, just the round balls. Cleaning those guns is quite a chore with that sooty black powder. I'd surely love to see a late season flintlock only hunt for doe here in NYS but highly doubt that'll ever happen! -
One of the most enjoyable threads on the web, no kidding. The years are going to pass sooo fast you won't believe it, filling every possible minute you can with your kids is great. They won't remember much of it at their young ages but PRINTING all the pics you can will preserve the memories for all of you. Some might call that "precious moments". Keep up the good work Dad!

Oh as I've mentioned in the past, I've hunted with and killed deer with compound, recurve, longbow, shotgun, smokeless ML, Inline ML, flintlock, CF rifle and handgun. I didn't see a box to check for all them? These days it is only smokeless ML, bow and rifle.
-
I can't answer fully either. Vertical bow, rifle & ML'er. I shoot a doe/fawn when I want UNLESS I stumble onto a blood trail like I did last year during gun season. A 165gr 30 cal bullet (from the 300WSM) to the back of a suffering button buck's head was the least I could do for the little guy. The bastard that didn't track him out should have his nuts twisted off........but I digress. Ultimately filling the freezer is the goal, toss in a decent (or not) buck and I'm fat & happy.

Well, looks like I've missed a bit. Too tired to catch up on it all for now.................. The passion runs deep regarding our beloved deer hunting, keep up the fight!

Pics or it didn't happen.

Yea, last I checked Melvin Forbes doesn't want to buy back my NULA ML'er. LOL....... Sure, I can and will still use it in a heartbeat over my Ithaca DS II when I hunt in southern Erie County but it'll surely get less face time with the new regs.

Hunting lease - Livingston County, NY
Lawdwaz replied to Pete Collin's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
The point that this is THEIR 112 acres to hunt for a year after they've paid the price of admission has obviously sailed right over your head. How's that ATV use working for you in Letchworth? How about treestands and food plots? How about clearing lanes? How about guys planting their ass down within 75 yards of your "free" hunting grounds, how's that going to work out? -
It's a trick, they're trying to trip you up!

For plenty of people $2,300/year is better than tying up $200,000 +/- PLUS taxes for 112 acres to hunt. Wouldn't be for you or me but others don't have the options we do. -
The management team at New York Bowhunters have got to be just livid..........
-
Thanks for the link .......rob. Those changes really suck.........................why bone the bow and ML hunters so bad? I'm going to put some ink to paper and send it off to Harrisburg. OH wait, this isn't Pennsylvania! YET.

Ahh, a new pup. Brave man, very brave. My pooch just turned 12, My wife says NFW are we getting another dog but if 'Ol Mike Rossi and his band of merry men can get NYS to pass a dove hunting bill then I'll have to over rule and say YES to another dog. What did you get Steve; black, yellow or chocolate? (or is it one of those goofy labradoodle (or whatever they call them).
-
I'm serious on the original question though......thanks.
-
Are they just about done growing or do they have some more to put on? I'm thinking they have to start hardening up since they'll be rubbing by the end of the month?? I'd only be guessing but think the still have a little growth left? The reason I ask is I've got a few nice spike bucks I'd like to see get some branched antlers still before I cork 'em. (HaHa, just kidding!)

Cheaper than owning! Good luck with sale. -
Mine didn't come yet, maybe today? I always look forward to each issue. This Christmas I'm going to give a couple gift subscriptions to the guys at work.

Just one guys worthless opinion.................(mine, not yours Oak) If AR's OR the One Buck Rule are implemented the heat will definitely be on the YEARLING buck as they will surely be killed by guys (mistakenly of course) shooting an antlerless deer in lieu of a buck sporting 3 points to a side. And only obviously the doe fawn and mature doe will take a big hit like PA hunters have done. Oh wait........they WANTED to protect the yearling buck right?
