  1. If it is just a tad on the warm side, 45 or higher, you better get that hide off asap, IMO. I've had some meat that was pretty stanky next to the bone in the HQ's. Back straps, shoulders etc are all fine its just the stuff that takes the longest to cool that can get a bit foul............ If you can dress it off, stash it in the shade, maybe get some big ice blocks stuffed in the cavity it will help. The thing is too, if you take that questionable "aged" deer to a butcher, you don't know if they trimmed out the gray stuff or not. They may not take the time to slice & dice the rank pieces. Hell, they'll probably grind it up in the big community grind and spread the wealth, so to speak. Gross.........
  2. one week won't make much difference in hanging. 14-21 days is what you need. With the hide on, you must really work hard to cool that deer asap. If you pull the hide, it cools MUCH faster but........when you hang a deer for more than a few hours without a hide you have more trimming/waste to do and after 7-21 days you have LOTS of trimming to do and plenty of waste. How do you plan on hanging it in that fridge? Nothing like well aged venison. I've done 14-21 days before but always in a cooler, on a hook, hide on. Scrape away the moldy stuff and you have a winner. I don't do as much aging as I used to as it is just too hard without a constant temerature. Day and night tems change so much I can't/won't fight it. One time we aged pheasants with the guts in them for a month in the fridge before dressing and eating.......I'm still kicking!
  3. Not much it won't do in the lower 48. 120gr or 140gr pills, u pick! I have had one for about 5 years and am a big fan. I've only shot a few deer and some woodchucks with mine, all 120gr handloads. The deer were shot with Barnes TSX bullets. This year, it'll will be the very stout 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip that shoot like a house-O-fire. Nothing wrong with the TSX, I just enjoy tinkering. The 120gr bullet at close to 3000fps will get the attention from any deer or bear found in NYS! The 260rem, 257Roberts and 243Win are all great chamberings also but the 7mm-08 is top of the heap, IMO. Buy it, post pics and shoot!!
  4. Alsheimer has been doing it for 30 years. Why all the fuss now? His pics were/are as phony as anything now, just better drugs for the captive deer.
  5. Who's chronograph did you shoot through at those distances? Hard to imagine you only lost 24fps between 10 and 50 yards.....
  6. You'll probably kill your biggest buck ever this year.................................................
  7. I bought mine (CED M2) for reloading. I could really care less how fast my arrows are going. When I did chrono my arrows, it was when my buddy was dying to know how fast his were going out of his new bow. Yep, a bit disappointed he was.
  8. If I get the "urge" one more time, just as I get to my stand. Damnit all anyways.........
  9. Lovely, another chick.................................. Kidding, kidding & kidding!! Welcome to the HNY.com site. I take it you have been lurking for a bit and finally built up enough courage to sign up? That's pretty much what I did. For the most part I'm a very shy meak kinda guy. What the hell are you doing up ar 4:30am? Once again, welcome!
  10. IIRC my arrows are going about 260fps, maybe a shade less.. (My new 25-06, with 100gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, 51.5gr IMR 4350 is going at 3180fps, if you were wondering) Hang on, I'll go check the weight of a RTG arrow........... 315gr plus 100gr Slick Trick=415gr Ready To Go.

    Rain

Power is out here, been out for 90 minutes or so. Running on generator. Sump pump & internet......crazy!! We got hammered with rain, probably close to 2" I'd bet.
  13. Thanks for all the interest. <grin> Sold!! Lock 'er up boyz.
  14. Another point, the internet is an amazing source (only obviously) of valuable information. Guns International, Gun Broker and Guns America are great web sites that are chocked full of good material. Asking price and selling price are two hugely (Billy Fuccillo like) different numbers but you should be able to get enough info. to be dangerous!!
  15. The handful of gunsmith's I've dealt with wouldn't be a good source for pricing info. anyway, IMO. They seem to be cut from the same cloth as a taxidermist. <grin> Odd ducks..............<grin> Whatever you do, don't tame them to Gander Mountain for a trade in..............<no grin> <grin>
