i check my scope mounts with a torque driver but have never checked other screws. I think most of my guns come apart with the press fit style things. where a small punch knocks them free.

i don't think there's anything wrong with feeling remorse or sadness. It's human to feel that way, especially for an animal that we all really love. That's the thing most anti hunters will never understand. Us hunters care more for deer than anyone. we groom trails, plant crops, fell trees during very deep snow. Compassion is maybe a better word. It doesn't stop us from hunting, but it's ok to feel for the life you took.

well said. There is almost always a moment of dread during tracking if you didn't see it drop in sight. Usually the deer is still dead but if it's not clear right away... man talk about an emotional rollercoaster.

I would like to start researching and looking into an elk hunt for my dad and I. I don't really have any idea where to start. Still not even sure about bow or gun but want to start looking into it. This trip would not be anytime soon, but i want to start "planning". any advice?

killing living animals does make you less sensitive. Have you seen how some people react to the african big game hunters? Us hunters don't lose our shit because we understand it. They don't and they're hypersensitive to it. I think a better way to say it, is that it doesn't desensitize us. But I have had some coupe-degras and other hunting situations that were tough. Getting through them does make it a little easier to get through future kills. I imagine your first dead deer was a little easier because of your farm upbringing as apposed to some who had never killed a large mammal before. Heck I was deeply bothered by the first chipmunk i killed with a bb gun. these aren't bad things, just observations.

no offense taken by me. I think this thread speaks to a much larger issue then hunting age. Many of us here are "small government". Which basically boils down to letting us do what we want within reason. I personally believe the govt is here to protect me with its military and provide civil service with some regulations to help the economy and its people. But when I read a story the other day that NY (of f'n course NY) wants to pass legislation to curtail the tide pod eating issue, my mind is f'n blown. Kids aren't eating tide pods because they look like candy. They're eating them because they want attention, but lawmakers are too f'n stupid, or just looking for a headline to understand that. Hunting age falls in the category of "let me raise my kid and stay the hell out of it" for me. My personal belief is that any absentee parent who would let their kid hunt without proper education and guidance probably already has issues with that child. The well parented and educated child would not.

this is not what i thought this thread was going to be about. I'm bummed

the only part of this that doesn't entirely hold true today is the "because I must" part. Otherwise I love this. I've never enjoyed the fact that this pastime, tradition, sport or whatever you call it, involves the taking of a life. I'm obviously not against hunting. But I do not enjoy that part of it. I would hope most don't.

watched wind river over the weekend. Solid film. Good acting and some beautiful imagery. I gave it a 4 on rottentomatoes and i'm a pretty tough critic. My only complaint is that the bad guys went flying 5' with every gun shot. There was no need for the hollywood spin on it. Otherwise I'd give it 4.5.

just finished browsing my cabelas spring turkey flyer. Got my blood going a little bit, only 2.5 months to go!

i have the luxury of deciding to work from home if i want so that's the plan today. however as of now in webster there's really nothing on the ground but it's starting to flow as I type.

i think too many envision some kid headed off into the woods in the dark at 6am with a loaded rifle by themselves... that's not something the government needs to police, but parents. I'd be right there by my sons side and we'd probably go in during the afternoon or gray light.

I go through a period right after deer season where I feel out of sorts. Then as these cold winter days progress I will take the occasional hike, but without much of an urge to be after the deer. I sort of feel like there's this truce period between us. I still jump deer on hikes of course, but I'm more interested in trying to spot a drop and looking at bed downs then I am with planning the next stand. It's just so cold, the days are short, the snow. The outdoors just doesn't call me. Then in March there's always a day or 2 of nice weather. That gets my turkey brain in gear and the fever sets in again.
