not just angles but what's the deer going to do at the shot? how's it acting now? they can drop a lot faster quartering too than away if you do chose to try and slip it in inside the shoulder and leg bone toward the base of the neck. plus distance. 30 yards can be worse than 15 with having the deer drop.

i try not to get too deep back. everytime i've still gotten a little on the rib cage. lot of meat there still. anything that stomach contents touches is no good, even if still edible. i don't care if you hose the cavity out really good. it's acidic and gets into the meat. it's a decision you have to make as you might not get a better opportunity. usually you just have a little slice in the stomach and if you're careful you can reach in, free it, and roll it out without pushing on the it bad enough to get the contents all over inside and on the back straps and tenderloin.

My enthusiasm for hunting this year is well not very enthusiastic

hard to get pumped when it's 90 degrees out with 80% humidity. i think a lot of people get burned out when they put in lots of time and can't get over not tagging deer enough for their efforts. it's nice to commit to the season though and decompress, relax, and let things not be so busy or urgent. how i keep my sanity. -
after the (regular) season starts is peak breeding. deer will be moving around even if they get away from people. private land with fields and ag or lots closer to roads usually show lots of sign but often it's from activity and feeding at night. deer are kept away from any resource/food other than at night. hard to catch them going back to bed because bucks say aren't really going back to bed too long. they're up moving. gotta find patches of cover or terrain that's used for bedding or hard mast stands and then hunt in between it without letting everything know you're there. then you can find bucks cruising between spots likely to have doe or you'll find doe looking for the next spot for some piece and quiet without being pushed by bucks . it's hard to beat them to bed, especially the bucks. evenings are more productive to hunt farther in with hopes of catching something headed to the spots closer to civilization and all the sign. just what i think has worked for me. edges feathered into wide open mature woods that run perpendicular to the prevailing wind that day are all good spots. especially if terrain or say a creek or bog is what created it. bucks will scent check a lot of acreage that way. i killed one buck at like 10 yards with my bow on a huge tract of state land miles in that way. that's what i think.

1000-1500 calories a day for everyone though? he's doing some things right but feeding people BS too. a good diet means the right amount of energy going in vs the energy you're burning doing whatever it is you do. beyond that its use it or lose it as you probably know. the science and knowledge some have to figure that out is what's lacking. along with indulgence on too many tasty calories for what they did that day.

i saw north salem and got excited. wrong salem. ours is a bit north by around 160 miles. besides there's only one place there. literally. welcome to the north country.

grew up using green box Cor-lokts in 150gr. I've since switched to Federal Fusions in 150gr. seem to be really good terminal performance. I've also been told to switch to 180gr for big woods and lots of cover. honestly hitting any kind of brush will defect the bullet all the same as both the 150 and 180 have the same profile. i've used 180s and feel like they punch through more retaining energy (now wasted) after it's left the animal due to the added weight. the 150's i feel dump energy into the animal more but still have undeniably enough to punch to carry through any part of the animal through and through at those ranges. only reason i'd change is to go to a higher BC for longer range past 300 yards.

browning abolt 30-06. light with a short throw bolt i've gotten used to working fast. Remington Woodsmaster 742 just isn't dependable enough for being big woods out in the elements for days. 7600 is dad's gun but i wouldn't hesitate bring that either.

complex double or imperial IPA's and stouts will always be more that ales, pilsners, or simpler IPAs and stouts. More of a process to brew them and more ingredients. A couple ipa's i've posted here were $6-8 per pint can.

see a lot of that out this way. i've had some of theirs and they weren't too bad.

welcome.... what area are in or plan to hunt in? have any family or friends that hunt successfully to be a mentor?

i wouldn't doubt DEC would dump it to be overly cautious. they've taken out deer for less. such as i've known ECO's to shoot a deer in a suburban neighborhood that gets tame from people feeding it. from what's been described by it's behavior it doesn't seem to be CWD. a deer hanging out in a backyard letting you get closer than you'd think is nothing new. unless he has an updated report to us that it's behavior has drastically changed, i'd be willing to bet anyone money it's not CWD. I'm thinking it's just any number of reasons related to nourishment and situation it was in during its first year of life or now. i could think of many. not good for a buck heading into fall though.

could never justify the cost but they are nice. would definitely need to get practice nocks to go with them to save some money.

Wild Berry Bushes
dbHunterNY replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
ours weren't doing well with the drought but now they're cranking out berries with no end in sight. i usually make paths to some where i can and clean out the weed competition with the belly mower or brush hog. definitely preferred browse for the kids and wildlife. keeping them opened up with competition seems to keep them lower to the ground and accessible. -
Swiss Army Knife
dbHunterNY replied to airedale's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
i used to have one very close to what Al posted. i used it a lot as a kid. i don't remember exactly but i think something happened to it when using it on the farm and it just didn't last. in it's defense i'm sure i was using it beyond it's means. i don't know if they make different grades of quality but i remember it having darker more maroon handle scales then bright red. -
Here in rensselaer county you really won't get one unrestricted to let you carry normally right from the start. We can take a post license evaluation course and then request that they be removed. Even then it has to be at least a year. I agree though. It is absolutely ridiculous the standards vary so much county to county. I mean in a state as anti gun as this you'd think they'd get a handle on that. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

good to see you're getting stuff on cam.

buck take objective is an obsolete method for determining population now. it relies on everybody shooting anything legal given the opportunity and that's just simply not the case. still if they put it out there i'll read it.

Got some action in my first time food plot
dbHunterNY replied to Gizmo285's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
looks good! -
there's places where i just can't have things. like for work some days i'm greeted by government contracted "security" toting rifles with high capacity mags, safeact non-compliant accessories, and fun selector switches to ensure i'm not packing and dishonest with my intentions there. if you're capable with the right mindset i think you should have something whenever you otherwise can though. there's a lot of references to hand-to-hand ninja skills or physical prowess here. i've formally taken martial arts and later on boxing earlier in life. call me a skirt but i totally live life thinking the chick standing in the checkout line behind me or stranger walking down the street could very well have the skills to give me an a** whoopin. not content relying on anything to be honest. lol if it came down to it i'd use what resources i had and hope for the best!

It took all of 5 minutes. For what amounted to a super sportsman plus we had to try multiple times to get the damn fishing dates not to overlap with last years. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

2018 HuntingNY Whitetail Classic
dbHunterNY replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in 2018 HuntingNY Whitetail Classic
us QDM elitists think that's probably one of the best deer calls out there come late season. thanks for the help. we'll bring you some hot coffee.
