Well we made it back alive. Left Friday around noon and made it there between 3 & 3:30. Selecting a campsite blind off the internet isn't always the best case, as we quickly found out. There were 3 families and of the 3 of us, only one had a pop up. The other two of us had tents. The sites were not set up for tents as they were basically gravel driveways made for pop ups and campers and no grass. The site my family selected was huge and we ended up giving it to our friends with the pop up as the site they had next to us was barely big enough for their van, let alone their pop up. We made it work though and had a blast. It rained most of Saturday to dampen the mood so we drove around the Amish trail checking out some of the shops which was cool. Fished on Sunday. Caught a nice 17inch 3+lb largemouth. My buddy has to send me the pic and I will post it. Only fish we caught. Monday we golfed at Cardinal Hills. Nice course and good weather and didn't golf too bad for first round of the year. Shot an 89. Fished Tuesday afternoon. Caught a small largemouth and a few sunfish. Saw two of the largest Rainbow trout I have ever seen in my life in the inlet. My buddy caught a small rainbow and about 15 sunfish. We had a blast. Never got to anything else as trying to get 13 people all on board to go somewhere was like waiting for paint to dry on a humid day. It took forever. We did have two kickball games though, parents against kids. The kids slaughtered us the second night, but the parents won the first round. All in all it was a great trip and the company made it great. We would go back someday, if and when we get a camper, but not in a tent. Batteries died in the camera but did get a few shots of the lake. My buddy has more so I will post when he sends them. Thanks again everyone for all the recommendations.

Got out of work late so when I called home the kids were starving. Thank goodness for Mickey D's on the way home. Choked down a Big heart attack and some fries. Your dinner sounds much better and certainly more healthy. Enjoy.

I used to go very light, only what I could fit in the pockets of my pants and coat. I found out I should carry more after shooting a deer about a mile from camp and had to drag it back alone. Here is what I carry in a normal camo backpack I picked up at Wal-Mart. Drag rope, multitool, zip ties, matches, lighter,2 pens, hand wipes, paper towels, paracord, water bottles, trail mix, sandwiches, bananas( helps with cramping muscles) and Apple Danish(my favorite) extra gloves, extra grunt tube, rattle bag, flashlight, extra knife and a small sharpener to put an edge back on any blade. I also use a butt stock cartridge holder for extra ammo.

Ouch - Being compared to Zimmerman, haha Good thing I have a sense of humor or I would be offended. Thanks for the birthday wishes all.

Not sure where Kinzu dam is but I will ask around. I love to fish in the summer but haven't done much due to work and helping my FIL on weekends for the last month and a half. Heard Thunder Rocks was cool so we plan to check it out. My buddy made a tee time for us at I believe Elkdale CC for golf on Monday. Just looking to relax and have some fun. Thanks for all the tips on where to go. Ill post when we get back with pics

Yes it grows in NYS. There is an older gentlemen that lives near our hunting cabin. He is an honorary member and walks his dog on the property often. He has picked some ginseng and sold it for big cash, $600+ for one root. I look when I am walking but have never seen any.

Recently got my pistol permit
Zem18 replied to PSEcopenhagenHUNTER's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Copehunter, first off Copenhagen is nasty, try Kodiak, the only bear you will ever pinch, lol. Second, there is a spot in Binghamton and the have a class on Wednesday July 23rd. Here is the link http://longarmgroup.com/firearms-training-concealed-carry.asp Their course is good for Broome, Tioga, and Chenango. I too got my permit in May this year so I will wait a while before I take a course. Need to get a pistol first. Still deciding and saving. -
A couple of general camping tips for the summer
Zem18 replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
Headed out this weekend camping so thanks for the tips. We doctor up our smores too. Don't use just Hershey bars, try the Hershey cookies and cream bars and Reeses peanut butter cups. Got some Elk steaks from my FIL off his bull from November. Can't wait to get them over some hot coals with a touch of salt and pepper, mmm my mouth is watering already. Last tip, fill a gallon jug with water and set it in middle of tent or cabin. Place headlamp around water jug with light facing the jug and you have a cheap lantern. -
Well 4 more days of work and then we head out on Friday. About a 3 hour drive west for us and we will be enjoying the outdoors. Can't wait and the weather looks decent for the week except Sunday. Not sure if we are golfing but plan to do some hiking and definitely some fishing. Ill bring the camera to take some pics.

Thank you for the use of the term "Davenport". My grandma and grandpa used the term daily when I was growing up. When I read your post, it brought back some great memories of both of them. Grandpa was a great fisherman on Cayuga, catching his limit almost daily of Lakers.

My BIL is the king of mustang. What is sleeping out, oil or antifreeze? If it is oil, be sure to check the valve cover gaskets first and 're torque them down if they look ok. Maybe some of the oil found a low spot and then leaked down the heads. What year is it and we have to see pics.

My BIL and I used to go up and fish the Salmon River with our 6 1/2 foot bass rods using 20lb monofilament. Not the best gear but landed fish and lost a bunch too. I upgraded to a 9ft Great Lakes noodle rod with a no name reel and 17lb test line. The longer rod will take up some of the fight and your arms will thank you. Good waders are a must so shop around. Used to buy the fake egg sacks in the glass jars. Caught fish with them. Then saw a fly fisherman come down and cast into a pool 40 other guys had been fishing for hours. This guy hooked up instantly and landed several fish. Lots of pissed off guys but my BIL and I were laughing. We asked him what he was using and all he said was black fly and he showed us. Now I will share the secret with all of you on the black fly. First choose a good hook, semi circles worked good.(can't remember specific name or brand) Then go to the local craft store and buy a package of black pipe cleaners. There about 10 to 15 -10 inch pieces in each package. Cut the pipe cleaners into inch or inch and a half pieces. Then wrap one piece around a hook and you have yourself a black fly. The hooks are your biggest cost but it works. We watched a bunch of fishermen and women and asked questions as well. Don't be afraid to strike up a conversation. You never know if you will find the next secret such as the black fly.

My Dad was in the Army but the only gear he had was his duffle bag and a few coats with his name on it. My brothers and I wore the coats when we played guns in the woods with all the other neighborhood boys. Try doing that nowadays. I saw it at the garage sale and it peaked my interest for camping so for $.50 I believe it was a good deal even if it is missing parts. I really want another for my son who is 8. He likes it because it is different from today's flashlights and it looks cool.

http://www.flashlightmuseum.com/GT-Price-Flashlight-MX-991-U-2-Cell-Dark-Green-Right-Angle-Light-with-Belt-Clip-and-Ring-Hanger-2D-1963 I picked up one of these flashlights at a garage sale this spring in not working condition. It is missing some parts and I would like to find another maybe complete one. The hunt is on. I have seen them new on eBay for under $15 so if anyone has one they do not need or see one at a sale at a decent price, let me know. I'd appreciate it. It can be a Fulton model or a GT Price model as they are interchangeable. I contacted Fulton for parts and they have a $100 order minimum or else they charge a below min fee of $15. The cost of the parts I wanted came to $5.64. Not paying $21 for parts plus shipping I'm sure. My wife thinks I'm nuts when I told her I could start a fire with it using some steel wool. I showed her last weekend and she is now a believer but still thinks I am nuts. Go figure! I think there will be a picture attached and if not there is a link to follow. PC is not working so I am using the Kindle.

WTB plastic removable top barrels
Zem18 replied to MACHINIST's topic in Non Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
Dave Chipper,s in Binghamton 607 722 1694 sells the plastic 55 gallon ones for $10 each. -

I grew up fishing on Cayuga. The lake is full of panfish so anywhere you can drop a line is good. If you had a boat, I would suggest fishing close to Milliken Station, the power plant you can see from Taunghannock Falls. Warm water discharge and the fish seem to like that area. Worms are your friend along with minnows. Good luck and most of all have fun.

It is a tough decision to make I am sure but don't let a hunting season be your deciding factor. You could be missing out on an opportunity of a lifetime. I wish you luck in your decision making. Keep us posted.
