The river was high, fast and green...The tribs were high, fast and clear....We are going to try 10 mile tomorrow....

There were some mayflies coming off.....Tacks caught one and it looked to me like a BWO, maybe a size 18...There were some bigger flies coming off, also, could have been hendricksons..The trout were not eating them however..Never saw a rise...Caught two small trout on a pheasant tail nymph....We are going to try again tomorrow afternoon..

I'm meeting The Real TC III at 2:00 PM today near Avoca for an afternoon of trout fishing...Perhaps Tacks will post a picture or two... The main river " Cohocton" may be too high to fish, but the tribs should be fishable..

My Dad and the fathers of most of my peers while I was growing up served in WWII...Actually, my Mom did also....While Dad was dodging bombs and Kamikaze planes on a destroyer in the South Pacific, Mom was serving as an Army nurse in a hospital in West Virginia, helping patch up the boys who were wounded overseas...

I have a 40 year old Rem1100 with double beads that I have killed many birds with.....It still works fine as long as I don't PEEK and raise my head..One advantage to that gun is that if I happen to need a follow up shot or take a flying shot I can shoot instinctively and will probably still kill the bird...It's tougher ( at least for me) for me to shoot a running or flying bird with an optical sight than it is with a bead...

A good buddy of mine, who is a turkey hunter extraordinaire, missed three gobblers early last season.. He uses a scope on his 870, so he checked it on the patterning board and discovered it was WAAY off.. Lesson learned... The guys who hunt with simple bead sights don't have such worries, but many turkey hunters are now using scopes, red dots or other optical sights, often to take advantage of the super tight patterning turkey loads available nowadays...Most hunters wouldn't deer without checking their scopes first, and it applies to turkey hunting as well... Scope can move, especially with those heavy recoiling magnum loads.. The gun I am taking to Ontario the end of this week is wearing a Leupold 1x4x20 scope...I shot it today to confirm the zero..The turkey head was riddled at 30 yards, but the center of pattern was appx. 2 inches to the right...I moved adjusted the scope left a few clicks , and took a confirming shot...Dead nuts..Good to go...

It's early yet, John....Good idea to take the strutter down if the birds seemed tentative..I have had very good luck in recent years with a strutter, but now and then a bird will spook from one, or just shy away from it...

I could have done mine this morning, but I did not want to be the first asshole in the neighborhood to mow AND rain was predicted today... Sure enough, right now the rain outside sounds like a cow pissing on a flat rock...As soon as it is dry enough, I'll be mowing.....

Poor Ned...Talk about typecast....In the many roles I saw in in after Deliverance, all I could think of was him squealing like a pig... Same way with the dude who played the psycho in the original Dirty Harry movie...I could never picture him after that as anything but a psycho..." MY..That's a BIG one....Don't you pass out on me now Piggy...No no no no no...…"

I'm seeing lots of stutters with hens in the green fields...Flocks are getting smaller...Also seeing more solitary hens, indicating the winter flocks are dispersing and the hens are checking out nesting areas...

I'll tell you exactly where I go, Tony...It is near Picton, in Prince Edward County...I hunt with a local fellow who has lived there most of his life and gets us permission on private land...There is some Crown Land in the area, but I have never hunted it... When I first hunted up there, in the late 1990's, the season had only been open a couple of years...The turkey population was expanding, and the locals had not learned how to hunt them yet....Naaive birds and not much effective hunting pressure...Lots of fun.... But within ten years or so, the learning curve took effect with both the birds and the hunters, and now the damn things are just as tough to kill as the ones around here that have been hunted 50 years...Hehehe... I still enjoy going up, but I think my time is limited...My friend up there is in poor health and a couple of the landowners that give us permission are older than dirt... One complication to hunting turkeys in Ontario..In order to get a turkey license, you must first take a day long turkey hunting safety course... They only hold the courses at certain times....

Bummer....Just got in touch with the Dad of the youth hunter I was planning to take out next weekend...He has made other arrangements with some formal youth hunting group sponsored by a local sportsman's club, which is fine... I guess I will have to wait until May 1 and shoot those gobblers myself.....<<sigh>>….
