Although in Florida Osceola turkeys LIVE in swamps and often roost over water, I have never seen birds relate very much to the kind of swamps we have here in western NY , ith cattails, etc. The average mixed hardwood / conifer forests provide pretty good nesting areas, especially if there is a lot of understory...Edges of the woodlots are best..The hens instinctively will nest close to field edges, because as soon as the poults hatch they will need an abundant supply of high protein food, and fields have lots of insects which provide the protein they need..

That is definitely a plus..

Okay, I can just tell you what the BIG boys have told me... The birds are still in their winter flocks, relating to food sources and suitable roosting areas.. Spring dispersal will occur this month, but it might be late in the month and often it happens quickly, in a matter of a few days.. At that time, hens will leave the winter flocks and relate to good nesting cover...Of course they still have eat, so prime nesting cover adjacent to available food is ideal.. Good nesting areas are high grass and brush cover, recently cut over woodlots, and similar stuff... Gobblers will go where the hens are, so if you have the combo of nesting cover, suitable roost trees and feed on your place their should be some gobblers around.. Other than that, I don't know much about it...

I have eaten a few woodchucks...Actually, the half grown young of the year are similar to squirrel or rabbit..The adults tend to be stronger tasting and grisly, and are better left for the buzzards , IMHO......

Yeah, but so do turkeys, pheasants and chickens..At least the pigeons are picking out the corn rather than eating carrion, as crows often do ...

Rock doves, aka feral pigeons or barn pigeons are unprotected, shoot as many as you want anytime, as long as other hunting regs ( shooting too close to buildings with out permission, etc) are adhered to... They are challenging targets , more so than crows, and they are darned good to EAT too...

They may be trying to protect their "jewels" because the guy that they are shooting at MIGHT know how to shoot and may very well blow their balls off....Hehehehe...

Live from the rifle range
Pygmy replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I assume that the top group was after sighting....Nice group for a hunting rifle .. Of COURSE it kicks less than a 12 gauge with heavy loads...So do the vast majority of rifle rounds other than the " elephant gun" chamberings...Hehehe...30-06 is a pussycat compared to a 12 gauge with slugs or heavy shot loads... Looks like a nice deer slayer, Rob... Enjoy your new toy !! -
What do you think is the best rifle ever made?
Pygmy replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Canadian ( and British) made SMLEs made a significant contribution also....There are some convincing arguments that the SMLE #4 rifle , many of which were manufactured at Long Branch in Ontario, was the best BOLT ACTION battle rifle ever made.. -
You're doing great there 7600 !! For awhile at the beginning of the season I thought I was going to have to come up and give some wingshooting lessons...<<GRIN>>..........

KEWL !! Nice toy !! I'm on my way to the property this afternoon to put the battery in the old Ford 9N and see if she will fire up... Last year she popped right off after sitting outside without being started for 6 months...

That was an issue with the Canadian Ross rifle( WW I vintage)....The bolt , when disassembled , COULD be improperly reassembled to allow the bolt to blow back into the shooter's face when firing.. The rifle was discontinued and replaced by the British SMLE , but the main reason was not the safety issue, but the fact that the mechanism was so mechanically tight that the rifles tended to seize up and quit operating under sustained fire in combat situations.... I did a search on the Blaser R93 and could find nothing but a few rumors about safety issues...There were some catastrophic failures that were credited with improper reloading, such as loading them with pistol powders rather than the proper rifle powders..Loading a rifle case full of fast burning pistol powder could make a bomb out of any rifle... -
If that is ME on the top after an evening of Genny Cream Ale, that poor guy doesn't stand a CHANCE !!

Steve beat me to it....I was going to say the M-98 Mauser and it's many variations, of which the CRF Winchester M70 is one of the best... Steve was incorrect in one statement, however...There are many bolt actions which are much different than the Mauser 98, the only similarity of some being that they are operated with a bolt, rather than a lever or some other device.. -

A man and his girlfriend had issues... He told her that he was turned off because she smelled bad "down there".. So the girl went to a gynecologist and he told her...It is basically a matter of hygiene..Keep clean and there are feminine deodorants you can buy with different aromas, such as strawberry, raspberry, vanilla or whatever that will make you smell better... The girl went back to her boyfriend and told him that she had bought a fragrance to help with her problem... Her boyfriend was all excited and asked her what fragrance she had bought.. She replied...." Tuna fish.."..........
