I shot a rabbit today with my 20 gauge s/s that would have been a good one for the judge...The beagles ran him for almost 3 hours and the little bastard just wouldn't come out of the super thick stuff, so I finally had to bust and crawl my way in there and shoot him at point blank range..Got lucky and hit him in the head so I did not shoot him up...I didn't care , though, I just wanted to kill him so we could get the dogs out of there !! I led the beagles out, coaxing them with the rabbit....When I got to the road, I was bloodier than the rabbit from the multiflora rose..Hehehe...

I love shotguns too...But I like them mostly for what they were designed for...Shooting patterns with multiple pellets at flying or running targets.. A shotgun with a single projectile used for deer sized game is simply a less accurate, short to moderate range rifle.. And I have probably killed 70-80 deer with shotguns and slugs, including smoothbores with fosters and brennekes and rifled shotguns with sabots.. Once rifles were made legal in my area, I put the shotguns away ( for deer hunting) and never looked back. I will admit that with shot loads they are awesome home defense weapons, tho !!

HMMMMMM...I might develop an interest in Nascar if I could hang around in Danica's pit every now and then...
-
They probably didn't have a wooly mammoth available when they made the video...
-
I'd MUCH rather watch golf, and I don't even play the game...

Ravens will come into crow setups sometimes, and they are federally protected, so you have to be careful to avoid shooting them.. 40 years ago, ravens were basically absent in my area...One day while crow hunting we called in and shot 2 of them, thinking they crows and assuming that no ravens were in the area..Once we had them in hand, the size difference was obvious. They are MUCH bigger than any crow.. Nowadays, ravens are plentiful here, so you have to be more careful..If you pay attention, it is easy to tell them from crows on the wing.

Does your wife know you stole her good clothespins ?.....<<grin>>....

Many moons ago, when I was a mere wisp of a lad, a friend and I killed a bunch of grey foxes with a Johhny Stewart 45 RPM record player and a grey fox pup in distress recording...Best night we ever had we called in 18 foxes, although 2 or 3 per night was a much more realistic expectation... We never killed a red...Only ever had one come within shotgun range and my partner missed him.. We tried the dying rabbit and called in a few, but the grey fox pup was far superior... We always used a shotgun with #4 shot, and most of our shots were well within 50 yards, many much closer..

YUM !! Our local Wegman's has just started offering pork belly in the meat case...I have been enjoying it immensely... I'm also very fond of side pork...Pretty much the same except it has a rind on it..

Good luck....I applied in Maine for 20 years and finally gave up...I still apply in New Brunswick since the odds are a little better for drawing there and I have connections to hunt up there should I get incredibly lucky and draw a tag.. I did manage to draw a tag there in 2004 ( odds were much better then) and killed a bull..I have a friend here in NY that has applied the same number of times I have and has drawn 3 tags, and has killed 2 bulls up there...

My Dad had an Iver Johnson that appeared to be the same or very similar to the hammerless one in Jeff's picture... Being double action only and with a LOOOOONG trigger pull it was very difficult to shoot accurately..

The hair looks too long and coarse for a fisher...I wish I could roll it around and get a better look at it, but for now I am siding with the COON guys...

I second TF on the Mucks....They have become my mainstay the last few years, and I wear them a LOT...

The stock dimensions, not the rib, are the main reason that a trap gun patterns high...Most trap guns have about 1"- less drop at the heel, which makes it easier to hit a rising target without covering it up with the bead.. I always thought that the main purpose for a rib as to present a flatter, more consistent sighting plane. Years ago, ribs ( both solid and ventilated) were mainly seen on target ( skeet& trap) guns... Back in the 1950s and 1960s you saw many more plain barreled shotguns than ribbed ones in the field.. Vent ribs started gaining popularity along in the 60s and have become nearly standard in many field guns ...Solid ribs kind of fell by the wayside, probably because they were heavier than vent ribs..Why carry the extra weight around in a field gun..? Shooting slugs has never been an issue involving ribs...It is true that a ribbed shotgun with double beads may allow more precise aiming with slugs that a plain single bead barrel , but that is only if the gun happens to print the slugs on the point of aim, which many of them do NOT.. Unless you get lucky, for slugs you need an adjustable sighting system of some sort, either iron sights or optical sights..

I sight my HV rifles 2-3" high at 100...I just hate to waste perfectly good trajectory....This allows me to hold center ribcage out to 300 yards or thereabouts...Keep it simple... Back when I hunted with a slug gun I used sight about an inch high at 50 yards, which put me on zero at around 100..With my setup, it dropped like a rock past 100 yards, but I considered 100 yards maximum range...
