He probably had a couple of inches on me, but after rigor mortis set in I am definitely taller... His beard looked pretty long and I thought before I shot it might make ten inches....I can count the number of ten inch beards I have collected ( in 40 + years of hunting) on one hand.. At 9 3/4" he was a little short....But then again so am I......<<grin>>....

I got lucky this morning and found a dumb one... Had my pick of two adult gobblers ..Both looked about the same size, but one was strutting nonstop and was perhaps five yards farther...The other one stretched his neck nice and high Ba Da BING !! 38 paces.... 18 pounds,, 9 3/4" beard and 1" spurs....

The canuck gobblers won this year....The few gobblers I got to work were with hens.. This is one of the few years since I have hunted there that I have not even got a chance at a jake Nice vacation just the same...

I like to wait until the bird flys down before I call..If I do call, it's a few soft clucks and tree yelps...If he gobbles, I shut up until he flies down. Several times I have witnessed people calling aggressively to a bird on the roost...Often the bird will gobble his azz off and then wait in the tree for the hot hen to show up, sometimes for an hour or more..Meanwhile, he is gobbling in every other hunter within a half mile..

Remington Core-Lokt 30-06 180Gr Round nose bullets?
Pygmy replied to Pipecrew's topic in Deer Hunting
Round nose bullets group well in many rifles. They also tend to expand very reliably and perform well on game. Assuming comparable accuracy, pointed bullets have no significant ballistic advantage until the range gets long, say 250 yards and beyond. Even then the difference isn't as much as many people think.. -
Hey !! That's ME opening day of deer season last year ! Did my ex-wife send you that picture ??

That must be my problem..I'm sipping Crown Royal as I type this... I have been out on the back deck enjoying the weather (and the Crown) and listening to three gobblers sounding off across the river on land we can't hunt....<<grin>>...

I have put my time in for 40+ years.....If I could figure my number of turkeys killed VS my time spent hunting, I probably would be one of the world's most inept turkey hunters...

Bear sounds ;..." Hey Boo-Boo...Lets go find a PIC-a- NIC basket !! "

You might lose your money, Larry...I have come home skunked form here a number of times.. Them damn turkeys is frustrating critters.. Tomorrow is another day...

That gun is the same as my 11-87..I have used several different sighting systems over the years. Probably killed the most birds with Tru Glo fiber optic open rear and bead front.

I'm gonna have to learn to do this picture stuff....<<sigh>>.... I use 2 rigs, sometimes depending on my state mind a certain day... One is a Rem 11-87 SP in Trebark camo, 3" 12 gauge with a 21" bbl, KIck's .665 Gobblin Thunder choke, and a Leupold VXII 1x4 scope. The other is a Rem 1100 3" mag with a factory 26" fixed full choke bbl. Even after 35+ years it is still bright and shiny..I used to camo tape it every year for turkey season, but now that I do most of my hunting from blinds, I don't bother. Both of them are deadly out to 40 yards plus a few, with Win XX or Fed Premium buffered, copper plated turkey loads in either #4 or #6 shot..

So far I have had 2 hens come in...Weather has been crappy and the toms haven't been co-operating...Heard a few roost gobbles and that's it..Tomorrow is another day...Weather is improving and I still have 4 days to hunt.

Greetings from Prince Edward County in Ontario.. The opener is tomorrow morning...Weather looks kind of crappy, wind and rain...However after tomorrow the weather is supposed to improve and I will be hunting through Sunday morning, EH ! My partner and I have some birds located, so I am confident we'll get some action before the week is over.... Oh yeah...The beer and Crown Royal taste just as good as last year...<<smile>>...

Hunting near Picton in Prince Edward County.. It IS a PITA to get a license for one reason....Ontario REQUIRES that before you can purchase a turkey license you MUST take their training course, which is similar to a turkey hunting seminar here in the states..It doesn't matter how many years you have hunted or how many turkeys you have killed, if you want the license, you gotta take the course..This means that you must go up to Canada specifically to take their training course, which is 6-8 hours..basically you blow a weekend... sometimes it's difficult to find a scheduled course, yada yada. Once you have taken their training course, it's no big deal. Small game license is about $125 CD and the turkey tags ( limit 2) are $25 each.....Not a lot of good public land to hunt....The law requires permission to hunt private land...No posted signs required, if it is private you just do not hunt without permission. In my experience permission is fairly easy to get by knocking on doors and politly asking, but you must take the time to do it prior to the hunt. I have a friend up there who has lived in a rural area all his life and he secures permission for himself and me every year. Gettting the gun across the border takes about 1/2 hour at customs filling out an application and paying about $30, which registers your gun in Canada for 60 days... Despite the favorable exchange rate, the bugs are much bigger..An average Canadian mosquito seldom leaves with less than half a pint, EH...?

Thanks for the heads up, Growie....I just added my thermacell to my list for next week's hunt in Canada.

To each his own, Fletch....Some like blondes, some brunettes...<<smile>>... A lot of people like the looks of the T/C Contender/Encore...I think they are among the ugliest rifles ever made.. Personally, I think the classic double action revolvers made by S&W and Colt in the early and mid 1900s are a thing of beauty... In autos, I like Lugers and 1911s and some of their variations...Don't much care for the looks of Glocks, Sigs and many of the more modern autos.

I don't have tackle heavy enough to fish a lure that big...My HEAVY gear is a 7" medium light action open face rod that I run 10 lb. test on. I also don't fish largemouths much. My standard rig for walleyes, smallies and panfish is a 6 1/2' light action graphite with 6 lb. test...

I may have to take my canoe up to Ontario to hunt gobblers next week...Several of the cedar pastures that I hunt are probably underwater.
