  1. I get to ride in a couple of vintage automobiles now and then....One of my friends on whose land I hunt often has a beautifully restored 1936 Ford Coupe...We take that to the Legion a few days per year when the weather is nice.. Another good fishing friend has a '67 Chevelle 396 that he bought new back in the day..When we ride in that it is hard to carry on a conversation due to the engine noise... The first vehicle I drove on a regular basis was my Dad's 1953 F 100 pickup....I took and passed my driver's test in that truck... The first car I actually bought and owned myself was a 1957 Ford Fairlane with a 292 V8.... My second was a 1957 Dodge Coronet....Great car...360 , 4 barrel carb, air conditioning and a back seat as big as a couch..Just what a 19 year old needed in 1969.... Cost me $300.....
  2. Happy Birthday, Mr. Dom, wherever you are.......
  3. Hmmmm...I had a high school history teacher named Glenn Boylan...I wonder if he was related to Homer.......
  4. Thanks for noticing......Hehehehehe.... There's your snicker, my friend... At my age, my doctor recommends that I don't get TOO excited....
  5. I hunted every day but five... Called in 5 longbeards and 4 jakes. I don't shoot jakes, but any 2+ year old is fine with me..I don't target a specific bird. The hunting for me was tough, this year, like usual...<<grin>>... Kind of an odd gobbling year...Many mornings seemed perfect, so still that you could hear a mouse get an erection 100 yards away, but I heard very little roost gobbling...Often the birds would gobble later in the morning.
  6. Hoping for warmer, drier weather the next three weeks..Critical for the turkey hatch... Weather up until now did not mean squat..Average hatch date in NY is around June 13th...Wet, cold weather then is deadly on poults..
  7. Okay gang....Growie's going to be sharing lots of trail cam pictures of HORSES.....<<grin>>....
  8. I saw my first snapper of the year yesterday on my way home from turkey hunting...I straddled him.. There will be plenty more this month...
  9. I'd like to hunt naked with Jennifer Nettles... We could decide what weapons are appropriate once we get in the woods
  10. There's the difference...I have never been a trophy hunter....Any 2 year old or older gobbler was fine with me... I have never selectively hunted the biggest birds, which is probably why most of my gobblers have been 18-19 lb. birds with 8" t 9" beards and 3/4" spurs, with a few 3 to 4 year old birds thrown in, just because they happened to be UNLUCKY that day...
  11. Congrats, my friend ....Great bird and way to hang in there... BTW, I have killed over a hundred and my heaviest NY bird weighed 22.5 lb. and I can count my 10" beards on one hand...Super bird for NY....
  12. Congrats on the last day birds, guys....I was out there, but heard NADA.. Always a relief when gobbler season is over..Now I can concentrate on catching some FISH !!
  13. Shucks, Moogie, a big chooch like you should be able to skewer one at 20 yards with a Watusi throwing spear....
  14. You traditional guys can't shoot as far, so you need your stands closer together...<<grin>>....
  15. Trout on dry flies... That's about as much fun as a guy can have with his clothes on....<grin>>....
  16. Happy birthday to one of the nicest guys on the forum !
  17. The worst scope bite I ever had was from my 7MM08, off all things ! I was shooting at a steep uphill angle and crept on the stock...Missed the damn deer, but I was the one leaving the blood trail when I left the woods.....hehehehe..... I have also been nailed by my .280 Rem, which is a relatively mild kicker, plus a 12 gauge shotgun and a .50 cal. muzzleloader..
  18. Probably the heaviest recoil was an H&R 10 gauge with turkey loads, but most any fixed breech gun with slugs or heavy shot loads kicks pretty bad off the bench, especially the lighter ones I can shoot 3" loads all day out of my gas autos, but if I shot more that 8 or 10 rounds of heavy waterfowl loads through my Browning over/under, I get a headache.. I have shot a couple of potentially hard kicking rifles, a 458 Win Mag, and a 45-70 from the bench, but neither kicked bad because both were loaded with relatively light bullets and light handloads. One time I worked up loads for my .338 Win mag and my buddy's 300 Win mag for an upcoming Alaska hunt...Probably the worse beating I've taken from the bench. The .338 kicked hard, but the .300 recoil was sharper...Neither was fun to shoot from the bench.
  19. Oh Shucks...! Moogie wouldn't shoot a little skipper like that anyway...<<grin>>...
  20. Fine bird and another great story...Congrats, Lee....
  21. great shots as usual, Matt...I saw my first fawns this morning myself while turkey hunting, but they were singles...Both were up and following their mothers, so they must be a few days old...
  22. The Mermaid and I had dinner last night with BUGSNBOWS and his lovely missus, Sue, at Fran's landing, a local eatery.. They live in Florida, but own property and a camp near my home here in Steuben County.. Bugsy was born and raised here but has lived in Florida for years.. We had a very nice evening...They are very nice, down to earth folks and they have a deep appreciation of the natural wonders that this area has to offer..
  23. Geeze, Chris.....Looks like Hemlock to me... Maybe it's the camera angle...
  24. Glad I am not the only one who is struggling... Gobbling activity has been very erratic in my spots....Several PERFECT mornings there was no gobbling at all...Then the next day there would be several birds sounding off.... I blew my chance on my second bird Sunday morning..Don't feel like typing the complete story, but I hurried my shot and missed him clean by shooting right over his head... There were extenuating circumstances however, but for now, we'll just say I blew it and missed.. Still got a week to go... Tomorrow is another day....
  25. Larry the Cable Guy.... A policeman pulled me over and said " Sir, have you been drinking? " I said " Why.....Is there a fat girl in my back seat ? "
