  1. Salt works well for grass control on your asparagus bed...The problem is, it makes the asparagus more attractive to deer...
  2. My Mom ( Bless her Pea Pickin' Heart) , before she died, designed her own device to remove chicken feathers... I inherited it, and I call it my Mother's Plucker…….
  3. Ok....My bad ...Hehehe...……...
  4. That's another reason I don't shoot Weatherby Mags....<<GRIN>>...
  5. I haven't heard/read any restrictions on interstate travel.....PA residents are driving across the border here to NY evry day because the PA liquor stores are closed ( state run) and ours ( privately run ) are not...
  6. Never shot a critter prone ? I have shot 13 caribou IRRC, and I think every time I was lying on my belly... I have shot 2 pronghorns, both prone, and the biggest of my 2 mule deer prone.... I shot about six whitetails with that XP-100 that I sold you...Five were either prone or resting over a hay bale, and the other was resting against a tree ( at about 25 yards)…. Shot quite a few whitetails from prone....I used to spend a lot of time in PA watching fields from a place where if I saw a deer, I could flop down off my stool and shoot prone with the bipod. I guess I just do things better lying down....
  7. Just a break from all of the pandemic stuff we are all experiencing... I was 16 years old in the summer of '66, and was listening to The Beatles, The Lovin' Spoonfull, and many other classic groups on my transistor radio... My sole income was working on various local farms during the summer for some spending cash... Along with this, there was the opportunity for woodchuck hunting in my spare time, between milking cows, haying, etc..... There were LOTS of woodchucks around then..They were in every hayfield and pasture...This was BEFORE coyotes in this area.. I owned two rifles at the time, both of which my Dad had bought me...One was a Win M69A .22 rimfire with a Weaver C4 scope, and the other was a Rem M722 in .222 Rem. with open sights... I hunted mostly early mornings and late evenings, before and after working.. My score for the summer was 76 woodchucks....I only shot about 10 of them with the .222, because the cartridges cost $3.15 per 20 rounds at the local hardware..I could buy .22 LR hollow points for 85 cents for a box of 50.... I got pretty good with that .22... Sighted in dead on at 25 yards, I was 1.5 inches high at 50, dead on at 75, and 3" low at 100....I paced off every shot, so I could judge range pretty well...Within 100 yards, if I had a good rest, a chuck was in peril, and I killed a few out to 120 yards or so...Of course, this required a considerable amount of belly crawling at times to get within range, but at my age, it was no big deal... I wonder what 16 year old kids are doing with their summers these days...….
  8. BEAUTIFUL fish, Chris....I like the snub nose...A few years back I caught one like that three times with two weeks...Had to be the same fish, because I caught/released him in exactly the same spot, and the creek ain't that big...He was 19", but certainly not as chunky as that one you caught..
  9. My Old Fat Father always told me that a FEATHER DUSTER would lay eggs in the spring....
  10. The most important function of a turkey vest over the most of my turkey hunting career has been a good, strong game pocket to carry out the bird.....Carrying a big gobbler over your shoulder, even with a turkey sling, gets old quick when you have to a lug a heavy bird over steep and rough terrain for perhaps a mile or two to get back to the truck... Vest #1 appears to have an ample game pocket...The second one looks like a very nice setup, but unless I am missing something, I don't see any provision on it for carrying a big bird... The way I hunt now, out of a blind, it is not so important, but for many, many years of running and gunning for turkeys over rugged terrain, a vest with a good game pocket saved me lots of pain..
  11. Yeah, The border is closed for all non-essential travel...I don't think the Canucks would consider gobbler hunting or spring bear hunting essential... Hopefully, by fall, things will be re-opening... This will be the first Ontario gobbler season I have missed in 20 years...
  12. Let us know what you learn Jerry...PM me if necessary
  13. That's OK..I already have the hairy legs and armpits …..
  14. I'm going to wear an " Unknown Comic" mask...Any of you youngsters remember the Gong Show.....? " Chuckie- Chuckie- Chuckie..."
  15. That reminds me of a story, although it doesn't involve turkey guns.... A fellow named Louie was bragging about his woodchuck rifle and all the long shots he was making with it.....Two of his co-workers were chuck hunters and when Louie offered to go out into the parking lot and show them his rifle, they agreed.... Louie produced the rifle, which was a beat up 30-30 carbine with a cheap scope... One of the guys looked through the scope and discovered that the crosshairs were missing.. He said ' Louie...There aren't any crosshairs in your scope..How do you HIT anything with it" ?? Louie replied.... " It's a real BITCH until you get used to it"...….True story......
  16. When I first got my 11-87, it had a bead and mid bead...Shot a little to the left. and I compensated and killed birds OK...Then after a couple of years I bought a set of Truglo fiber optic sights that mounted on the rib, similar to what Mowin has on his gun..There was enough windage adjustment in the rear sight to allow me to adjust it dead on..Killed a bunch of birds with it, until my eyes went to hell and I started exploring optical sights as an alternative..
  17. I'd have ended up with a hook in my ear..
  18. Sometimes the best call is no call at all.....
  19. I'll give them a try, Rob...I have a bunch..Used to catch lots of bluegills on them on Honeoye back when I was fishing it regular..
  20. No I did not, and I was watching..Saw one fish rise to something, but I wasn't seeing any bugs coming off and I was on the creek from 2:00pm to 4:30... They should be coming any day, though...I expect this warming trend starting this coming weekend will get stuff hatching, and I WILL be fishing flies then..
  21. I caught 5 nice wild browns today from 13 to 16 inches in about 2 hours of fishing..... WUUUURMS.....Sorry, but on those small, brush choked wild streams I just am not a very good fly fisherman...
  22. I won't be making my annual gobbler hunt in Ontario, and my Canadian buddies won't be coming down here Hoping things are OK so they can come down and hunt deer with me in November... Kinda sucks because one of the guys is in poor health and I wonder how long he will be physically able to come down and hunt...It has been touch and go the last couple of years...
  23. I was only in one fight in my life and she kicked the hell out of me...
  24. It sure looks like a jake to me...In that picture the breast feathers look black tipped, which is a sure sign of a jake.. However, I'd have to see an enlarged picture to be sure.. I once shot a big, rosy headed hen turkey in the fall, and thought sure I was shooting a jake until I got right up to her and saw the chestnut tipped breast feathers..
