I wanted to get the big buck to my place for Thanksgiving dinner, but no dice!
-
Well I went to the old spot as mentioned in earlier post. Jumped one, it was solo, bedded down on the edge of hardwoods. Thinking it was a small buck, but who knows. Continued another 1/4 mile to stand locale. No tracks and no new rubs since late October.

Hunt the Scrapes or the Does

Best of luck! I have something of a superstition when it comes to guns. My brother bought me a .308 when i was 16. my first sit with it i got my first buck. fast forward a few years and only a few deer later i used his 7mm08 for the first time. I had the biggest buck i have seen at 10 yards, the three position safety got stuck on the middle setting and i blew it. a few years ago i bought a traditions muzzleloader pursuit (which is actually a fantastic gun at a low price) and on the first sit with that i bagged my biggest 8pt. My brother then bought a Browning A bolt .243 WSSM and the first time i used that gun i got a 151# 5pt at 300 yards. I bought the Winchester Model 70 and on my first hunt with that I bagged a buck. Basically the majority of my buck take has been with guns that are new to me! I was thinking about getting a gun with a synthetic stock for the brush banging I do. I love my .308, every deer I have shot with it has pretty much dropped in its tracks, it is just too heavy for me to shoot comfortably off hand. I like my friends fathers Remington model Seven. It is a short action lightweight gun that i can hold dead still. The model 70 is comfortable for me it's just such a nice looking gun i don't want to beat the heck out of it! And of course thanks to this "SAFE ACT" I can't legally "try out" my bro's guns in the woods. I guess I will just have to add to my invntory. Good luck to all!! -
they certainly seem to be hanging tight. I have seen doe the last 5 sits but no followers.

exactly, across the road is where i have hunted for many years. the spot i was at this morning was asinine. i mean people yelling in the woods??? heading back to old faithful across the road. she gave up her bounty on thanksgiving day a few years ago.

went out for the morning hunt. got up in my climber over the looking the spring runoff crease. had two skippers come cruising in, definetly spooked. They pondered what to do and made there way up the crease. then a hunter came down from where they went towars. he wound up walking 10 ft from my tree. i thought he was coming over to talk but cleary he didn't notice me until i whistled. i had a blaze orange face mask/hat on too. about a hour later i hear someone hooting down in the thickets. another hour i see a hunter (no orange on) walking down towards where the hooting was. there were at least 6 guys up there. i think i am heading back across the road tonight.

I wish i was in that stand today, I got drenched and frozen to the core. I miss hunting with close friends and family! Congrats!

went out at 1:30. made it about 300 yards from the car and realized i forgot my grunt call, again. set my climber down and two tails bounded away. ran to the car and retrieved my call. walked up into the woods and set up. it poured, then came the fog, then the wind, then the rain/sleet/snow. weather man said it was going to clear up. well he lied, again. i was drenched and frozen. had one cruise in at 4 and it was about 30 yards away and almost missed it because of the rain. just a skipper. tomorrow is a new day, and hopefully my camos will be dry. time to go take care of the gun. good luck to all!

I got a 165lb doe about 8 years ago now. She was a pig! I have a really old one I have seen twice now in the woods this year.I grunted her in on opening weekend. I saw her walking solo through some bushes and could tell it was a big deer. I thought it was a big buck, but to my amazement no horns. It walked within 5 of the tree I was standing behind when I grunted. Her mouth was opening, sort of panting (I don't know if she was tryingt smell or if she was in heat) and I could see brown rotten teeth. She must be pretty darn old.

This year my lovely gal has decided to do just small feast for us and the two boys. Thia way I get to hunt in the AM and come back to get in the way from about 11:00 to 1:00 then head back out til dark. A few years ago I had a buck walk 15ft from me at about 3:00 on Thanksgiving. That buck is known as the deer that ruined Thanksgiving. Gutted it and dragged it by myself and still got home before dark, by that time everyone was PISSED at me. For some reason I was the only one that could deep fry a turkey so I ruined Thanksgiving. I better stop typing before my wife comes and looks over my shoulder. UPDATE: She caught me!!! Apparently I had the NEW deep fryer in my truck and that's why they couldn't fry it.

Good to hear! Hope you get a crack at him! -
I was just talking about this with someone! Mid October I saw one huge doe on the side of the road. I drove up the road there was a new Subaru Forester parked on the shoulder and the front end was just obliterated. Looked like they drove it until it overheated. Other than that nothing at all.

Congrats to your family, what beauty!!

oh Paula .... your ONLY complaint is that you are out of BEER and your dog won't get one??? why can't more women be like that?
-
I just kick over an old mossy stump and lay some pipe, then set the stump back in place.

Bubba is it really illegal to have a loaded rifle in the woods past hunting hours?

Went to the new side of the road. sat where I had a stand about 8 years ago on the adjoining 50 acres. Thick new hardwoods with a spring running down a brushy crease on the hillside, and a pine knob to the west. It's a beauty of spot that i can get to easily now that i have permission to hunt 100 acres next to it. I had 5 doe come in. 3 after i hit the grunt call the first time. 2 the next time i hit it about an hour later. Saw yet another huge rub. Got a good feeling!

Not as many shots this year in 5S that's for sure. I am seeing doe at least.
-
I agree and that's why I let small bucks walk. the one i got with my bow was my first bow kill. everyone i know uses that argument, and they all shoot small deer even though they want to shoot big ones. The nice bucks Vinny posted are considered trophys where I live. I have shot bigger ones, but they are few and far between.

Here is a bear my buddy got on opening day. After being dressed out and sitting overnight it weighed 350. Taxiderist said it was the biggest skull he has seen and suggested getting it measured. -
