Feel better, Larry. If you need me to keep any of your stands warm this week, let me know. Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk

Yeah, I'm sure that's why one arm was bigger than the other... I wish I knew that tidbit when I was a teenager. "I've just been practicing with my English long bow, Dad. I have no idea how that virus got on the computer."

I went to a T/C Hawken several years ago. They sure are addictive. I shoot 75 gr. of 777 or Pyrodex behind a .50 prb. I haven't shot a deer with it yet, but I'm going to keep having fun trying.

I hunt Catt. County. From what I've seen, the WNY bow season special is a rifle from your truck at night.
-
That one part is actually a hell of a coincidence. I had two uncles who hunted but never took me. I struck out on my own for squirrel season 2010. Didn't see a thing at first, but my first morning in the woods I met a guy about my age in the parking lot. We got to chatting, hunted together the rest of the day, exchanged info, and he became one of my best friends. I have hunted every deer season since with him and a few other strays we picked up over the years.

Oh, man you guys are old. I've been in it 11 years. I didn't start until I was 20 but I haven't missed a season since. Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk

After a little more research, it turns out I have this priced like it's still mid pandemic and the store shelves are empty. Price drop to $450.

Because the current crossbow season is delineated by statute, not regulation. It's codified at Section 11-0907(10) of the Environmental Conservation Law. Theoretically, the DEC can only act as authorized by the legislature (I say "theoretically" because it is a little more complicated than that). But where the the legislature has explicitly said you can do A but not B, DEC can't authorize you to do B. The broad changes that DEC recently enacted where all areas where the NYS legislature explicitly or implicitly authorized it to regulate. Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk

The only drag I've ever used was a tarsal gland off a big roadkilled buck. I think in an area like this it is hit or miss. maybe a truly dominant buck will get pissed off and investigate, but I saw small bucks gets spooked when they crossed the trail and does didn't seem too eager to be harassed by the newcomer either. LIVE From The Woods 2021 Stories And Pictures Let's Have Em!
Caveman replied to grampy's topic in Deer Hunting
Went out for some hiking/scouting/squirrel hunting this morning. Found some promising spots for bow season. Saw 4 deer. I had shots at 3 squirrels and, had I used my shotgun like a normal person, I would be eating Brunswick stew right now. But I'm a dumbass who insists on trying to kill one with a handgun, so we are eating takeout instead. Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk -
Congrats on coming to that decision. You only have so much time with her. I've hunted pretty hard the past 13 years, but my favorite day in the woods is still the day I took my two year old daughter "squirrel hunting." I didn't even bring a gun but we had a blast exploring the woods, making up stories, pretending to see all sorts of African game, and then eating wild apples for lunch. I didn't see a single animal that day, but it's still the best day of "hunting" I've ever had. Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk

I was small game hunting on state land in Cattaraugus County last year and came across three large bags of corn dumped back in a swamp. I remember thinking that, although I disapprove of baiting, I was almost impressed that someone carried 150 lbs of corn that far into the thickest, nastiest part of that parcel.

Not to my knowledge, but keep in mind BP out of such a short barrel doesn't generate a ton of velocity, which in turn translates to a fairly low KE and killing power. I calculated the average KE of a .44 round ball out of my 1858 to be about 350 ft/lbs at hunting distances. That gave me ethical concerns, so I'd say bigger is better.
-
During ML season, you can only hunt with single shots. You can use a Cap and ball revolver during regular firearms season though.

@rachunter: I bought my Pietta at Cabelas and just left with the gun and the receipt from the cash register. I went to the Erie County Permit Office to have it added to my permit and they had no idea what to do. They were also very concerned that I possessed the gun without it being on my permit. I wound up having to go back to Cabelas a few days later to get the purchase paperwork they usually give with a modern handgun purchase. Where it says "NICS check," they just wrote "N/A." I took that back to the office and they were very concerned about why no NICS check was performed. Finally, two supervisors later, they understood what I was trying to do and added it.

I have a PIetta reproduction of a Remington 1858 New Model Army. I swear, cap and ball revolvers are about the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I chose the 1858 because it has the top strap on the frame, similar to a modern revolver. That makes for a stronger frame, which means I can load 34 grains of T7 and a conical without blowing the thing apart. My original plan was to try to kill a deer with it. But I shot it over a chronograph, calculated the KE at 20 yards, and rethought that idea. I can't speak for the 1851 Navy, but I really like the New Model Army. The Colt Navy is probably my next gun purchase though. At the end of the day though, it doesn't really matter what you get because you are going to want more of them. SIDE NOTE: Keep in mind, an unloaded BP pistol is not a firearm in NY. That means the guy at the sporting goods store will hand you the gun and tell you to have a nice day. But to add it to your permit, which you need to do before simultaneously possessing the means to load and fire it (thanks, NY), you may need some paperwork from the store showing the make/model/serial number/etc. Wherever you buy, just try to get as much of that paperwork as you can so you don't run into issues at the permit office. The folks in the Erie Office had no idea what it was that I was trying to do or why I didn't have the usual paperwork showing a clear NICS check.

I can't edit the original post for some reason. I'd consider trades or partial trades for other hunting/fishing gear, i.e other guns, trapping supplies, canoes, waterfowl decoy spreads, etc. Let me know what you have.

Bow: My 2004 PSE Nova that I got as a 14th birthday present from my dad. I never saw a reason to upgrade. It kills them if I do my part. Gun: I got a new to me Ruger Super Blackhawk this year. I decided not to carry a rifle until I kill something with that. Muzzleloader: Still trying to fill a tag with my TC Hawken for the 8th year in a row. There are years I certainly wish I didn't get rid of my scoped inline ML. Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk

This is the nice part about hunting public land: no preseason work to do. I will find new bedding areas during squirrel season and hunt them during deer season. This will be my first year in a saddle so I'm looking forward to being even more mobile than years past. I guess that's my only preseason task. Figure out how to use the damn saddle. I'm selling my FNS-9c by FNH USA. It's been a great, reliable gun. I have about 400 rounds through it without any hiccups. My friend that I bought it from had about 500 through it with a similar result. I'm only selling because I haven't carried it much since I bought my Glock 48. I don't see much reason to own two polymer 9mms and there are other interests I'd like to put the money toward. I'm asking $550 OBO for the gun, three 10-round mags (one has a pinky extension), and three holsters. The holsters are: R&R OWB, one alien gear cloak tuck IWB hybrid, and one IWB from Just Holster It in Alden, NY. I'd compare the style and quality of the last one to Bravo Concealment. I'm outside of Buffalo. Buyer to pay transfer fee.

This thread reminds me of a quote from The Office: "I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you actually left them." As for me, I'm too young to remember the good old days. But these threads always make me nostalgic for them, even if I was never there.

I'd like to get my daughter out after something. She's 4 and she has really taken to hiking and fishing. She helped me butcher my deer last year and refuses to fish unless we are eating our catch. If we lived in Brooklyn thy'd call her a "field to table enthusiast." Anyway, I'd like to get her out squirrel hunting and maybe on an evening sit for deer. Hunting-goal wise, I'll be hunting with a handgun for the first time this year. I've had my permit and shot CCW guns for a while, but I never had the urge to take a handgun in the woods. This year I got a sweet deal on a Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 2x scope, and I plan to take that out. I don't think I'll carry a rifle this year, so my goal is to drop one with the revolver.

I know this is probably raw and you are just venting, Nomad, but I'd start with a conversation. You don't know what could have happened on their end. They may have had a falling out with their son over something important that you are not privy to. They may have suddenly fallen on hard financial times. They may even feel horrible about this, but are too embarrassed to give the real reason. You just never know. You even said you just met them a few weeks ago. Then again, they could also just be cheap. Who knows? Just try not to jump to conclusions, and whatever you do try not to hold it against your soon-to-be son-in-law.

Anyone see #10 or 11 percussion caps anywhere? I've been playing with BP revolvers a lot lately, and I have more than enough powder and ball but I can't find caps anywhere. It's a sad day when the ammo shortage has extended to early 19th century technology.

Congrats. Beautiful gun. I just picked up a 1981 Super Blackhawk myself. I can't wait to get in the woods with it, though I'll just be shooting Buffalo Bore offerings.
