So group of jakes roosted 125 yards out. Soft tree talk they loved , clucks , scratching. Now they're out 250-300. I can't even call in jakes! They hurt my feelings

One hen, not necessarily low population. She just may be to and fro from her nest and your yard on her travel route. Betting she's on eggs . Was it winter hwen you saw 10-20 hens? Winter flocks , they split up in late winter . I had 25 birds roosted above my treestand during ML season. Now I'm hard pressed to get a gobble as bastids moved and split into smaller groups. Birds might rip on roost, they might not, they may gobble when hens go to nest late morning, they might not.

So we have confirmation "That bears really do crap in the woods" Thank you Some day I'll see one.....

On a serious note: only one way to find out. Cooler of beer next to lawn chair and have a stakeout. I'm in for a stint of watching. I also say bushy tailed tree rats are the cause

(Dutchess County) New Turkey Hunter- Advice Needed
turkeyfeathers replied to tonyc26's topic in Turkey Hunting
Depends on how much land you'll be hunting whether you sit and await a gobble on roost and try and close the distance or run and gun using locator call. If you're hunting a large parcel run and gun maybe the best choice especially if no scouting was able to be done. Hit owl call/owl hooter as you meander thru the woods and listen for gobble on roost or eventually after they hit the deck. Try not turkey calling as you walk as birds have been tight lipped this year and you may walk right into them. When you do use turkey call, call softer than you think and then cut that in half. Last few times out I've (we've) called hens in and haven't heard them until they've gotten to 30-35 yards. Tom will hear the softest of calls for a loooooong way . No wind providing. Turkey call every 15-20 minutes. Purrs , clucks and quiet 3 note yelps may be the best. Be in the woods by 4:30 am the latest. And BE CAREFUL trying to sneak up on birds on public land . "Turkeys " you may hear are other hunters and "you" may have other hunters try and sneak up on you as well. Enjoy the woods. Nothing better than listening to the woods wake up in the spring. Take all my info with a grain of salt as I'm on the schnide this year. Keep us posted regardless if you kill a bird or not. "Live from the turkey woods 2016" is fun to post up on and see how others are doing that day. -
Think they were hunting ?? I wonder how much pot and or meth labs are on other peoples property they don't know about. Grow, not yours as you know it very well but in general. On state land in AK while we were hiking I smelled a "skunk". Um their aren't any skunks in AK but pot growing season with 23 hours of daylight is pretty good. Not being paranoid but something always to keep in the back of your head while tooling around the woods and encounter a stranger where they shouldn't be.

great read and nice bird !!

Your Neighbor Comes Over With A Bottle...........
turkeyfeathers replied to Lawdwaz's topic in General Chit Chat
Neighbor brought over a jar of Apple pie this winter as I snow blowed out their driveway a few times and also a Heady Topper beer, another neighbor a good tough to find stout for the same thing. Not much of a scotch, bourbon ,whiskey guy. Too many bad experiences in my younger years and can't revisit them. Although tequila I can go back to. -
I'll throw this out there. Anyone perhaps interested in loading TSS turkey loads in 20 gauge or 12 gauge ? Guys love toting a 20 gauge jacked up with these and they out perform 3.5 " 12 gauge loads at 40 yards. #9's are supposed to be great but NY doesn't allow anything under #7's I believe. We could all throw in to get the shot, hulls and such . Just a thought for you reloaders. Would have to meet up to get such ammo from person who reloads as wonderful Safe Act and all. Apparently my current loads and daughters are defective as they don't make any noise so far this year

Years back I was on a business trip in Texas. Our hotel was all glass windows. On flight path of hummingbirds. You'd see dozens of dead ones each day scattered all around. Sad and poor planning on architects part.

Curious on thoughts of red lens maglight ?

I post my spotting on "live from the turkey woods" so excuse if you've already seen it. On the way home from hunting yesterday I was watching fields looking for birds. In a tilled field I spot a bird that stuck out like a sore thumb. She was cream colored and very light at that. She was meandering around the field with longbeard. I tried getting pics with binocs thru Iphone but that didn't pan out. I'll never see another this color phase I'm sure. Curious to how rare it actually is. Have you seen any color variations ?

should have lit up a crow call or gobble call lol.

Nice bird !! Saw you posting on " live " forum. Sounded like a checkmate was going to happen. Well done. Your blind looks like you set it up in the dark , lol. Or is it a bit tipped because you bumped it to run out for head stand on bird ? Sorry about beard , all about the hooks to me anyhow.

Still would look good in the skillet
