I only get so many tags and if I fill my tag on the farm I can't hunt the ADK's. I have killed piles of farm field deer, the big woods bucks are all I care about killing these days. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I like to keep a gun as light and compact as possible. I have shot deer at over 300yds and I have never shot a deer with a scope turned higher than 3x. I don't think I have ever turned a scope higher than 3x in the woods. If a buck doesn't have horns big enough for me to see with 3x magnification I'm not going to shoot it anyways. We are also on a paper company lease but we can't ride wheelers thank god! And we are the last camp on the log rode and a half a mile from state land. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't know why I even posted the question there is a 99% chance I end up with both what's 2 more when you already have way too many. I have wanted the 17a since it came out but have kept coming up with reasons why I didn't need it or another gun popped up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

When I was about 16 I watched a guy walking down our hedge row so I got out of my stand and ran down and popped out beside him. I greeted him pleasantly and asked him what he was doing he replied with "hunting" I told him he should turn around and head where he came from because he was going to be hunting here. He told me to"drag my ass before he had to kick it" to which he got a 30-06 barrel shoved into his forehead. He then started to tell me he was going to call the police and that Keith "my father" gave him permission when I told him he was my dad and I'm sure he didn't give him permission but we could walk over to his stand and ask him he turned around called me a bunch of names and walked back where he came from with me following behind him. It was dumb on my part to muzzle thump him but I was a dumb kid and he was an idiot but it was funny watching him hustle away with his tail between his legs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

After seeing Airedales sweet 22mag it reminded me that I "need" a new tractor gun with more range than a 22lr but not as much power and noise as my 223 or 222. I have a few 22mags and it's one of my favorite cartridges, 10/22mag savage 22mag model 43 I think, single shot handi rifle, Henry lever and a Ruger American. They all are ok the American being by far the best shooter but I like having an auto or pump for tractor work because usually they are running. The 10/22mag is worth to much to get beat around and never has shot that good, the Henry is ok but too pretty to get beat around and I don't love lever guns. I have looked at the A17 savage and that seems ok although I'm not a big fan of new savages. I really like the idea of the Remington 597 like Airedales and they seem pretty cheap. I don't own a 17 and have never really thought I needed one but is it any better than a 22mag for wood chucks and the occasional coyote or fox. Ammo seems to be about the same in availability and price so that's not really a factor. What do you guys think? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Glass is ok, it's a scope you will have for ever because leupold a warranty is 2nd to none. For a 150$ scope I don't think you will do better. The problem with scopes is that it's easy to say save until you have another 100$ and get this its way better although it's true where do you stop. If I could only spend 150$ on a scope it would be a VX1 but in 2-7. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't know how extravagant you want to go biz but I try to keep my bow as simple as possible because I don't want stuff breaking or being broke when I want to be hunting. In my 20+ years of shooting compounds this is the setup I have found to be the best. Sight- I shoot an HHA optimizer It's a single pin that slides for different ranges I love the simplicity of a single pin I set it and have it locked down for 0-30yd shots "I won't shoot a critter farther than that" but it's awesome to be able to shoot 100yds for fun if I want. Rest- whisker biscuit Simple, bullet proof and easy to tune. Many will try to talk you into a drop away and many like them, I find them to be a solution to a problem that never existed. Wrist strap- not a necessity but I have one and like having it on there, mine is just a simple strap just remember to leave it very loose for hunting. Stabilizer- I shoot with one that's relatively heavy and has some sound dampening to it. Brands not really important just try a few and see what feels best. Peep sight- I shoot a huge peep that I have drilled out to make even bigger allows more light in during low light conditions, for you starting out I would suggest staying with a normal sized peep because it makes it easier to align your sights. Release- I shoot a true ball leather strap hook release with a finger trigger. I have shot every kind of release there is and prefer a thumb release for shooting but a thumb release in cold weather is a pain in the ass so a wrist strap with finger trigger is a good compromise. Arrows- I hunt with gold tip pro hunters and have about 15 years. I shoot all year with the cheapest Beamans dicks sells I think 35$ for 6. I shoot year round and go through a few dozen arrows a year and see no reason to shoot a 10$ arrow when I'm just drinking around. Broad heads- everyone has their favorite I shoot sliktricks because they hold up well and easy to change blades. Hard to get a bad broadhead these days. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

You might be right, not that it matters I haven't shot a deer on the home farm in 5 or 6 years. I just enjoy being able to sit in a stand and see deer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Haven't read all the replies but an 8' ceiling with that winch plus a gambrel will put you closer to 6 1/2ft my suggestion is mount the winch to the wall and run pulleys up to where you want the deer hanging. If you use this approach that hoists capacity will be cut in half because you wouldn't be able to double the cable back as it is in the pic. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sorry for your loss, my condolences to you and your family. Sounds like you have raised one hell of a young lady and you should be proud of that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hmm, I don't know if I have ever noticed a big difference around here activity wise. In the ADKS I'm sure there isn't one but around the house there is a ton of hunting pressure and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Might be because most of our deer are extremely nocturnal to begin with. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I Got Bit...ignorant dog owners are out there

Oh I absolutely agree! We had a saying in the Marines when the Obama's administration rules got crazy "it's better to by tried by 12 than carried by 6." It's just sad that we have to even have this discussion because some idiot with a dog that bites people could ruin your life financially. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I'm only 30 and when I was a kid I could walk around in the winter with a 22 and shoot 4 or 5 a day and did it a few times a week my grandmother and other family members loved them and I loved hunting them. Now I have a dog and we go out a few times every week and I'm lucky to get him on one track a day. I don't even shoot them anymore because we just don't have enough. I don't honk as others have said birds of prey put a hurting on them as well as the coyotes and foxes. Around my place the biggest difference is the fishers and bobcats. I was probably 20 when I saw my first fisher around here and probably 25 when I saw my first bobcat around the house. Now I feel like I see them once a week or so. There is a lot more predators around now than there was 20 years ago that's for sure. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Welcome to modern America. I would be less worried about legal issues as I am being sued. Even if you won you would have thousands in legal fees. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I am surprised by how many mention hunting deer before I they hide or get scared, not trying to derail the thread but do you guys really notice that much of a difference? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I just don't understand a dog owner keeping a dog like that. I have been called heartless but I just don't get it. I had a dog when I was a teenager that bit my cousin and he didn't have a chance to bite anyone else in his last 2 minutes of life. My brother had a dog that bit me in the face pretty bad and that one didn't live many minutes after that either. A dog is a pet if a pet wants to eat people it's no longer a pet and has no use being alive in my opinion. A cow that kicked when being milked went to the beef market a dog that bites people goes in the ground. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Upgrading The Remington 597 22 Mag
Buckmaster7600 replied to airedale's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I never knew Remington made a 597 in a mag, that would be a perfect tractor gun! My current tractor gun is an old savage that my dad bought new in the 70's. It rides with me for nostalgia reasons and that's about it, it has an awful trigger and on the best day holds a 2.5" group at 75yds. I have killed piles of wood chucks and other varmint with it but it leaves a lot to be desired. That is one sweet looking plinker! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Boy I hope so! I haven't shot a bunny in 2 years because we just don't have any around. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Scope Suggestions Please
Buckmaster7600 replied to DirtTime's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
A 25-06 is a super flat shooter. No need for a bdc scope when if zeroed properly you can hold center of chest from 0-around 300yds and still holding on hair out to 400yds . Bdc's have their place on a 25-06 ain't one of them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
