It's a good thing you're doing. Best of luck to you!

They're really just giant racoons. LOL Scary actually. You're right on the open season! Same as deer season. Never even thought to check. Then again, when I grew up in that area we didn't have turkeys either.

Sweet lookin' setup! Have fun and be safe while ya put some mud on it.

They're definitely moving north, though I haven't seen any sign yet in my yard. Southern edge of Ontario co. Why would they forage around a forest all day every day when they can just raid a few garbage cans in the suburbs somewhere and take the rest of the day off? They're adaptable critters, and pretty smart. I hunt the middle of Wayne Co during gun season (near the Zurich bog), so I'll keep an eye out for sign this year. No open season around here though.

It's great that she's interested. Just don't complain if she really gets into it and gets a bigger deer than you somewhere down the road. It's been known to happen. Good luck and have fun. -
Good luck on your hunt! Sounds like a lot of fun.

Also look for drainage gullies in the hillside. Deer will tend to funnel to spots that they can cross those little ravines more easily while they're moving along the side of the hill. They make nice ambush points.

Vegetarian: an old American Indian word meaning "doesn't hunt well".

Nice shots! Did you know that some of them come out and actually pluck at the web to knock the dew off in the morning? If the web was destroyed overnight, they just spend the day rebuilding it instead of loafing around waiting for a meal. I'll admit I'm a bit phobic when they're around me, but they are amazing creatures to watch and photograph. Thanks for putting your web pics on the web for us!

You can't argue with people who are uninformed and wish to stay that way.

Personally, I would hate to see it become mandatory. Common sense beats regulation in this case. An entirely different argument there though. I carry a blaze hankie in my pocket whenever I'm in full camo, or even just hiking with a camera. Wave it if you see or hear someone or pin it to the hat when you're in doubt about who might be around, (granted that's most of the time these days). Orange won't directly bother the deer, but when every little bird in the area suddenly shuts up or disappears the deer will notice it. My senses go on full alert whenever a nearby crow or bluejay starts making a ruckus, because it's oftentimes a deer that gets 'em going.

Nice work buddy. A heap'o'congrats to ya!

Congrats, way to stick with it on the recovery! BTW, last years deer were loaded with fat as well. Remember the winter?

I have a Rem 870 Express Magnum that I'm interested in selling. Rifled barrel, cantilever mount, 1.5-6 Simmons scope, like new condition. PM me if you're interested.

Anyone have a killer venison sausage patty recipe?
philoshop replied to Fletch's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
Love Montreal seasoning! Adobo is good too. -
I asked my Mom and my Aunt, both old-school Italian cooks with well over 100 years of experience between them. Their response was basically, "You don't try to make pate' out of a muscle...cooking it until it reaches the right consistency will ruin it and you won't end up with pate'..." I got an earful from both!!! A pate'/spread is made with liver because it can be lightly boiled and then mashed into a paste. Add S&P to taste and whatever other spices you like and get out the crackers. I suppose you could grind the heart with a bologna or hotdog setup but it's so tasty in the other ways mentioned above, or even just sliced on a stick over a campfire.

Like a pate' spread? I don't know how to make it but I can find out. Finely ground meat and something...? My dear old Mom will know.
