  1. I did my WI forage oats plus and WI clover on 9/16/15 in Steuben county only because that was the only available date i had. Oats grew well for being later than i would like to plant, got about 4-5 inches tall.. Clovers did not grow(just built the root system) until the following April, but they came on great... until this chitty drought were in.. kind of dormant looking now
  2. If your planting in the next week or so, plant turnips, some kale and rape(brassicas) along with some clovers for springtime.. if not for another month, do some winter grains and clovers..
  3. For Hang-ons: I use the life-line attached to my harness, and just do a visual first, if all looks good i will give it a few good pulls and pushes, maybe a shake .. flex the cable that keeps it at a 90 degree.. if all seems well, ill make the step onto the platform.. after 5 or 6 years of steady use and nothing breaking, i will replace bolts, or the hole stand itself. My brother fell a few years ago out of his climber, due to rushing up the tree and not properly locking in his straps. after mercy flight and a long year of recovery, he has learned its not wrth it, and to take his time, not his life. Ladder stands: not much to check besides walking up them, and doing the visual on the way up. and the occasional shake to make sure verythign held together, of course attached to a lifeline and harness.
  4. If your new to the food plot world, a mix is probably better. until you know what your deer prefer. Cant beat clover or brassicas, but you just need to know what times of the year these are preferred. Planting clovers with brassicas(in the next week or 2) the clovers will grow slow, because they build a root system first, but come next spring, your clovers will look much better and be the 1st green food source out of the ground in April. an acres worth of brassica wont last too long, depending on your deer densities. There is a lot to take into it, but what are you trying to achieve? Feed the herd, or harvest deer, bow or gun... etc..
  5. Ill be planting it with forage oats in Early September Also, mixed in with turnips in a plot, next week(weather/rain providing)
  6. Looks like the inside if the browning trail cams, do they use the same shell?
  7. Ive done this before when i used to have my landscape gig. On my property I have many Elderberry trees, i never even knew what they were until my grandma in law mentioned it. She makes a dang good pie so i dug up 4 trees for her to plant at her house. Only 1 tree survived the 1st summer/ transplant so she nipped off all but 3 or 4 ft of the trunk, sure enough the next year they came right back to life and exploded with growth. the 1 tree that did live died because of the dogs the following year, so she did the same and nipped off all but a few feet of trunk and the tree is thriving like the others.. Especially when i transplanted rose bushes for my clients, id come back in the fall and cut them back a bit to promote new growth come spring.. Pretty neat it is
  8. Depending on the layout of the property, and where these clearcuts and logging roads are within. A sanctuary to me, is 1st choice, followed by food plot when it comes to harvesting whitetail during season. By leaving a few of these areas alone for sanctuaries, you will have cover for the deer to feel safe, filled with probably a bunch of native food/forage.. Depending on the quantity of the openings, then maybe a food plot. As long as it grows they will eat it, but if theres no cover to feel safe in, near by.. they will eat it more after dark than during shooting hours. I hunt a piece about 33 acres, that was logged heavily twice, within 8 years. The first year the deer were there browsing but not staying long.. about 2 years after the 2nd logging.. there is now awesome bedding cover and natural browse all over the place.. i took one logging road and turned it into a clover plot that runs along the out skirts of where they bed primarily.. i leave that as my sanctuary (about 5 acres) and only go in when i have to tend the food plot.
  9. The one camera isnt very far from a den, its been awhile since ive been there, seeings how its on neighbring property. Id love to go see it, but im not one for tresspassing because i hate tresspassers as it is.. lol but i got a ton of pup pictures crossing this trail intersection.. day and night.. wrestling chasing, you name it
  10. I respect them for what they are, predators. It is Mother Nature we are witnessing all around. But as sportsman, its our job to keep all numbers as healthy as we can and do our part to keep the future of hunting going strong..
  11. As managers we do what we can to protect anything on our hill. But too much is too much, hence the reason for doe take to make buck to doe ratios better. between myself and a neighbor we do our best to take as many coyote as possible. we just don't have the time like we used to, both have young families. But we took 6 coyotes last year. But when 1 female coyote can have 7 pups like this or more, there chances of populating fast seem to be pretty healthy.. You know there are alot of coyotes around when a pack of 5 light up the evening 100 yards in front of you, followed by 2 other different packs on both sides of you, not much further a 1/2 mile away. several evening during archery last year.
  12. All but one of my plots are prepped and ready for any incoming shower, if im not working ill lay down the seed and let the rain do its job.. until then i just stay in tune with the weather channel lol 2 plots will be Deer ag double Beam, and another plot of winter Peas(mid Aug. planting) all ready to go besides one Brassica plot needs disking.. Wedding coming up wont allow me to get there yet lol
  13. I have 22 stands at my camp, and 5 at my family farm in Macedon. I place them all out on Hunt stand lite app for my phone. simple and easy. Plus i never take them down unless to move them or re secure them for the fall season. When it comes to personal belongings, i remember quite well lol.. others things, i cant say... lol Will be putting up 2 more in early August, then Im out of the woods until bow season starts and the occasional trail cam check
  14. Stihl or echo.. echo is my favorite for everything power lol
  15. Only a couple landowners allow trappers, and dogs to run coyotes.. the others dont, only for the fact that before and after season they do the occasional walk with their family/ pets. this fall i want to try and get my licence to trap. I have everything to trap with for the most part. I also know where 2 dens are located.. one being near the one camera. Maybe ill have more time to get out in the 2016 coyote season.. or maybe take opening week off from deer hunting and focus on coyotes while they are a little easier to coax
  16. I have a ton of coyotes on camera again this summer. This first one just makes me mad/sick.. I know its mother nature, but we really have a problem with them at my place in 8P for a couple of years now .. Wish the season was open now while they're easier to control... I don't get much time to really hunt them, having a young family.. but i took 3 with my archery tackle opening week of 2015 archery season.. Cute shits when they're tiny, but when they grow up.. not so much
  17. It will be some time before the finished product comes around, I'm swamped at work Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  18. I have it all at work lol even Mastercam to program it thank you though!Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  19. Nice pics! Ive got a couple of bears so far this summer. And usually when the bear actually sees the camera, it ends up ripped off from the tree or busted up pretty bad..
  20. 2 of my buddies bought the rage knockoffs.. price is great for the quantity purchased.. they are the exact same thing just a little lower in the steel quality dept.. resulting in broken blades more often and the ferrule being not as strong. All deer shot with these have been recovered due to well placed shots but... imo ill spend the extra for the actual rage heads and they lost longer due to strength especially when trying to ethically harvest an animal quick as possible.. in my free time I'm building prints to make my own rage hypodermic broadheads and machine them myself..
  21. Thank you, I'm so thankful to be there with him that day to share it all... he actually just looked up to the sky and asked his dad, my grandpa for a little luck on that non active morning and this buck walked through 5 minutes later.. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  22. Good deal, Looks good. Dont mind me, i love everything food plots lol. I planted GHR a few years ago and the deer never touched the greens nor the tuber all year. I couldn't believe it. They hammer my turnips every year. So I figured I would try them in this mix in hopes they will acquire a taste for them.. we'll see. The idea of the green radish tops being eaten earlier than most and the tuber for later in season, plus the added nutrient benefits they offer, you cant beat GHRadish. Hopefully they'll use them this year... I'm Going to try some liquid fertilizer/soil builder this year too..
  23. seen many hens, only one had poults so far.. some of the others ive seen held tight in thicker cover. maybe checking for danger with the poults near by..
