Soybeans are in the dirt
LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
We did get a good storm last night. That should definitely help with the dry conditions, and they are talking more Thursday possibly. I planted logging road with clover 3 weeks ago with left over clovers i had .. would be great to see them take off.. its in an awesome spot for a hidden plot. My Murder plot of clover was doing well, cut it a few weeks ago.. later than i wanted but it has come back, and definitely needed this rain. -
Cant beat clover! Grows year after year if maintained. With all the oaks you probably got a great spot as it is. My question is, where would you put it if its 100% woods? When time is available cut down as big a spot as possible right in the middle.. Let it grow natural or work it into a plot.. with a quad as long as you have a sprayer to kill of vegetation, a disc and harrow tine drag should be plenty

I pick up my 2015 Archery buck tonight, I cant wait. Also, am dropping off an old one to have re done.. The cape is free of charge. Cant beat that.

With last weeks couple quick storms my beans started takign off better, there way behind.. along with the new seed i planted has sprouted as well.. The field corn screen isnt looking to hot.. whatever it is keeps pulling all the sprouts. Even with the pie tins and pin wheels through there. oh well i tried lol.. but the sweet corn i planted next to it, they didnt even touch.. its about 8" tall now and looks good. strange lol. What ever beans that didnt germinate and leave thin spots ill dress with turnips and brassicas end of july, maybe some oats in September. My tractor is down and i have a wedding to pay for next month, so im not sure if ill have it up and running by then.. if not ill use the wheeler but that takes much more time lol -
Soybeans are in the dirt

I only have 2 acres to work with in my biggest field. but with my "Fence" i install they keep out for as long as its up. once deer season nears i remove it and let them hammer away. My main reason for the beans is a late season food source, and the first week or 2 of archery.. this way i can try and keep them holding bean pods through the winter.. I love planting soy beans and we do not have much around us, in fact none this year .. -

I didn't make it there thisbyear, but I am on the mailing list at kilburys. I believe this is the last year I will buy soybean from there. He sold me last year seed. I'll just go straight to a pioneer dealer for next year. Not impressed this year. I wanted to buy some chestnut trees from there along with others as well, but dad was taken from me suddenly back in March and no time to do it this year now Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk -
Soybeans are in the dirt

Ive planted these for three years now, the first year they got wiped out.. i think the wood chucks did more damage than the deer.. But they regenerated a month or so later, but it was too late for any results to form..so i planted turnips/brassicas. The 2nd year i took care of the wood chucks and made a homemade "fence" type structure around the plot top keep deer out and the soybeans grew to almost 4' tall in spots, thick and lush dark green.. They grew awesome with a ton of bean pods.. and got hammered on This year with the total lack of rain, I have some pretty bad germination so far. it is quite thin and what has sprouted, is 3 or 4" tall at most.. they are calling for rain tonight and into Friday so i bought another bag of soybean seed, this time (Seedway brand RR soybeans that are i believe a 2.0 group so they mature faster) and broadcast the seed over the soft seed bed to let the rain drive it in and germinate. With a heavy enough rain it should be fine. There was seed on the surface that had germinated but either died or was stunted with no rain, so i didn't want to kill anything that may still grow by disking it all up... but i did make a few passes in spots, for a trial to see if it takes off better than the non disked in new seed... Once germination takes off ill put my "fence" back up -
first field corn plot in...
LET EM GROW replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Never noticed them before, guess I can't rule them out. But the sprouts are pulled out of the ground and are laying on top of the soil with the seed/lower roots gone lol Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk -
first field corn plot in...
LET EM GROW replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I replanted my field corn screens after the birds and critters picked all the sprouts out of the dirt and ate the attached seed lol.. dang things. This time after replanting, i packed it in hoping it would make it harder to pull through.. but without rain they have yet to sprout.. same with my soybeans, they look horrible, planted May 20th, half the seeds havent even germinated yet due to lack of rain (im hoping), So i reseeded those again this weekend with an earlier maturing RR soybean from seedway.. fingers are crossed we get a good day or 2 worth of rain.. in the mean time i have time to fix my damn tractor i hope lol -

I am not sure of the specific blend. I will check the bag this weekend and see if it states. All I know is that it has a couple different AG soybean seeds, with no forage bean seed. The website is not very descriptive either.. -

Its just hanging pie tins and irish spring soap, hung until the plants were close to 2' tall then removed.. (Early September) Worked great and they started eating it shortly after the setup was removed.. -

I broadcast my soybeans and corn, I work the soil up nicely, then broadcast seed and "fert if your using it", then drag something to get the seed under the soil 1-2" deep. corn needs to be under the soil or it wont stand long.. soybeans you can leave right on top of soil if need be, as long as a good rain comes soon after.. i did this last year, cause my drag broke lol

Soybean seeds i got at Kilbury's in Arkport, NY.. he carries Real World Wildlife soybeans and is 5 minutes away from my home... Not sure where you are located, but there are several soybean dealers around, depending on the brand your looking for; pioneer, eagle seed, or real world.. They were 85$/ bag... 1 bag for 1 acre -

Thanks for the advice, the reason I would buy this camera would be for video more than pictures, since i finally upgraded to an sd card with more than 4GB memory lol. Is the video quality in the recon force, better than the strike force videos? -

Corn is nice for the cover for sure. but depending on the hunting pressure, it seems they bed in there and wont come out til dark if they feel more safe in there, thats the only reason i like soybeans over corn. Now if it was my own personal property and i had corn, i wouldnt mind it so much in hopes to pull deer from the neighbors and get them to bed in the corn lol.. But corn or soybeans, im a happy hunter. This year as long as my beans do well, i have 100 acres of corn i bud up to.. looking forward to some good looking deer come fall.. -

Very true db, soybeans do offer cover when the leaves are still green though.. ive seen many of deer raise out of their beds from within soybeans during early bow season days... even the antlers of bucks hide pretty well under those soybean leaves.. -
Soil test will tell you PH level of your soil. And exactly what fertilizer to put down and the amount to put down, as well as lime. The main concerns/reason for soil testing. If your soil PH is too low, it doesnt matter how much fertilizer you put down, your soil can only use so much of it when the ph is low. The closer the PH is to 7.0(Nuetral) the better.. Lime will bring your soil ph up and the recommended fertilizers will give you what your soil needs.. depending on if you tell them what you plan on planting there. Typically i think soil will only accept up to 1 ton per acre per application.. any more would be a waste, so ive been told by my neighbor who works for an AG Co.
