Winter plans - Hinge cutting/ tree downing
LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
it sure looks like a perfect funnel where they cross the rd, but id add cover further into your property and not on the edges, for the sake of possible road hunters or people just stopping to see deer from the road.. plus you want to hold more deer on your property and not the neighbors.. place cover towards the corner of your field and/or further left from there so you can hunt around it(wind providing) or between the food and bedding. and cut them off.. id make cover away from your access points too, not sure where they are.. thicken up the area below your green spot in the middle of those trails and along the blue and red line .. where maybe a doe group will bed down, and you can cut the bucks off when they cross the road on their way to check that new cover/bedding area for doe in the rut. Thicken anything up along where the red and blue lines meet would be a good start i think... just dont let them watch you leave the house heading to a stand, -

i only have a few stands in the woods, and only hunt them seldomly.. (rut, mid days, etc..) and try to stay on or closer to the edges for the most part. leaving the woods to be more of a "safe zone" for them. but a sanctuary is always good. it limits your hunt-able acres, but it will also pay off to just incorporate this sanctuary plan in your other stands.. i have 4 sanctuaries in and around my piece within 1/2 mi radius... it definitely helps. you lost me a bit there,.. but more cover is always good, but i think id shy away from doing all that work near the road, and focus more away from the road, near the overgrown field, or the center of your woods, and or edges of your fields.. As for cover on ridges, heck yea.. i will be doing the same.. thickening up 2 different ridge tops(saddles) .. but im a rookie at this as well.. -
nice, I was lucky enough to get a pair of red fox mating in front of my trail cam a few years back.. ill see if i can dig the pictures up.

Awesome.

That is crazy how they come "out" of the deer and through the antler during velvet. I also thought the fly just burrowed "in" to the antler during summer... neat. Have a couple racks with them as well.

My Browning has been out since August, Has taken probably 5,000 pics.. The cam has worked great! i did have a flaw one week where the IR did work and my night time pics were just black, for a week. turn cam off and back on again re set it and its worked great since. 1 set of batteries the whole time. Although last week i brought the camera in for the year

I'm in the same boat as you. Unless we own a ton of land and can keep pressure off deer, this will happen every year. It's pressure that keep deer from being seen, cover will help always but planning entry and exit routes from stands and knowing where deer typically are in that time frame when your getting into a stand.. and not over hunting areas, I'm basing all my hinge cutting this winter on entry and exit routes.. to make sure if they do(and hopefullydo) start bedding in these areas, I can slip in and out of my stands with the right wind direction, and then never knowing I'm there. It is near impossible most of the time to keep the neighbors from ruining this for us but I feel it's a good start. One step at a time.. i think we're looking for the same in all aspects here.. Dingler, check out www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com and or www.qdma.com, i actually subscribe to qdma and they send magazines as well. (i like that stuff ) they have taught me a TON, in different ways to provide for our deer herd and help ourselves be a better hunter.. i frequent these pages often. especially if trying to picture all the good info from these posts.. Very cool sites.. -
NYS 5 year renewal pistol permit ?!
LET EM GROW replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
I purchased a springfield xds .45 in march (2014) and i had to renew mine as well before i could get it amended.. the renewal process took 4 weeks,(another nics check) until i could amend the gun. -
Awesome video! The deer here destroy our cedars and hemlocks every year here in Steuben county. I did this 2 years ago with one, i set it out 30 yards from a ground blind, and about 20 yards from the edge of the woods, in a clover food plot. I didnt dig deep enough and the first buck that rubbed it ended up knocking it over. And i never put it back up... I Forgot all about doing this again this year. Hopefully my brain remembers it for next fall.

Happiest pic of 2015 hunting or fishing season
LET EM GROW replied to moose's topic in General Hunting
I dont have too many happiest hunting/fishing memories this year, though i did harvest my biggest buck to date with archery tackle, my daughter is my heart and soul, she means more to me than hunting and fishing. I am happily awaiting the days we will begin making and sharing these memories together, then i can have the awesome photos in the field like many of you have.....(im jealous:) ) The first pic is her @ 9 months when we were out picking leeks back in April, The 2nd pic is her blowing into a crow call making a ton of ruckus(probably will call better than me someday).. the next pic is the great guys from deer search Josh Prouty's golden retriever "Rosston" when he recovered my buck for me, Lastly, being there with my dad when he harvested his 3rd biggest buck.... These are a few of my happy moments "in/about the woods" -

LET EM GROW replied to First-light's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Is this nursery in Saratoga Springs? if so, I guess ill have to order and have them shipped. 4.5 hr drive, We will be buying quite a few trees this year, and might have to take up on this.. -
I do not know how or why, but i pulled the camera out of the woods last night to update firmware, and see if that would fix the black pictures at night... checked the sd card that was in there when i got home and the dang camera took perfect pictures day and night since Saturday! Ill update firmware anyways but i was happy to see that it was functioning properly again.. actually extremely happy to find my #1 buck on the hit list made the firearms season as well..

I've thought about this as well. They are very comfortable here.. daytime pics/sightings all firearms and late seasons. . just thought about adding a few beds since they don't lay up here. But I don't want to ruin it either. I think I'll move my focus from this spot on to a couple others.. thanks again.. that's my issue is always over thinking them Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk -
yes it is BTC5HD, i have the firmware downloaded on card, and the instructions, i just have to install it, hopefully tomorrow night. in hopes it cleans up. thanks Phade.

planted 2 acres worth of radishes 2 years ago. they never touched them, tops nor tubers. 2 ft tall tops, 14" radishes.. i have done turnips and brassicas for years and never had a problem with their consumption. Maybe the neighbors have some "better" food haha
-
My turnips are not even being touched The tops got eaten a bit but not hammered, along with my standing soybeans, the deer are basically walking through them to get to other food plots.. kind of wierd, im hoping its just the warm weather meaning more food available all around..
-
My strike force (purchased in September 2015) had taken roughly 5,000 pics this fall/winter.. i checked the cam this pass Saturday and the dang IR isn't working at night now since the last card pull a couple weeks ago, in which i installed brand new batteries as well... just black pics with only the deer eyes being somewhat visible.. might be sending this one back now..

LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Agreed, and i have already planned these out, to be away from any stand or access route.... these will not be near any stands, but in between a couple of food plots where stand have been strategically placed for entry and exit ... these plots are actually frequented quite a bit during the day all year long, its like a safe zone almost, just going to spruce it up for more bedding cover -
I like feeders if your doing a solo hen decoy, if a hen group i do all feeders but one alert/lookout.. seems most natural to me. i haven't used a decoy to kill a bird in probably 4 or 5 years now. depends on the setup really, every setup is and should be different. dont let them figure you out.

New studies say Coyotes DO affect deer populations!
LET EM GROW replied to Mr VJP's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Id love to run dogs here someday, never have but id imagine its a good time at the least... The only reason we have "decent numbers" is from "managing" with as many neighbors as possible.. 8P, an area with 1st chance dmp medium, and no other chances. Gotta help ourselves anyway possible, if we want a future with our deer population. the state sure wont.. A neighbor of ours calls, and typically takes a 1-2 dozen coyotes every winter, im hoping we will be hooking up shortly, but we both do have infants in the house this year, so coyote time will be limited... I would not want to know what the deer pop. would be like if he hadn't killed any coyotes during the cold months the last few years.. -
Congrats, good video! might have to try this myself.. ask charlie alsheimer, he will tell you they definitely are harder to kill here than any midwestern state

New studies say Coyotes DO affect deer populations!
LET EM GROW replied to Mr VJP's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I did this once on our piece in wheeler, ny about 6 years ago... throughout one spring and summer.. The camera picked up "51" fawns killed and brought into that den. anyone who thinks different can try it themselves. And that was a year coyotes didn't seem near as populated as they do like this year and last. I saw 17 coyotes my first 3 sits this archery season, and ended up killing 4 of them with my bow.. i have never seen coyotes like this before in the 20 years we have had our property... The deer numbers do seem down some, especially compared to 10 years ago, but they are not "horrible" here.... yet.. -
