  1. As i was told, your camera should always have the latest firmware available. i would go on to their website and see if there is firmware update available for your camera. it should give you step by step instructions to install.. mine were very simple to update. I was surprised it brought 2 of my cameras back to working condition again, well they have been in the woods since november and no flaws yet..
  2. Yea, i have hinge cut trees before, just never for the sole purpose of creating cover/bedding/browse for deer.. That pole does look like it comes in hand for sure, especially placing these trees right where they want them..
  3. I was always against small caliber rifles in the deer hunting woods, until this year. A man i work with, his son picked up a 22-250 for coyotes, few years back, this year they decided to hunt with it for deer. between the man and his 2 sons, they killed 9 deer with that rifle. all but 1 dropped in there tracks from double lung shots. (the 1 deer only went 30 yrds) One buck was a 200lb 8 pt @ 275 yrds!... dropped him in his tracks. the energy from the 60 gr soft point just exploded the lungs on each deer... not saying i'm going to run out and buy one for deer hunting but,... a well placed shot is what matters most
  4. Ive watched a few videos on YouTube about hinge cutting over the long weekend. These definitely helped visualize everything you guys have posted about.. lots of good information, thanks everyone
  5. Ive had good luck with all of my cuddebacks. bushnells and brownings so far. i actually upgraded the firmware on 2 cuddebacks that were not working properly, and about ready for the trash. they are now in the woods and work great again. bushnell browning and cuddeback are the only ones i buy for now.. until they let me down. Cuddeback and bushnell have decent customer service (both replacing "old" broken cameras with new ones for 50% off)
  6. Ive got a 30-06 as well, and i shoot 165 gr core lokts threw mine. very accurate and cheap to shoot. i have only taken 1 deer with it, and it was a big doe in 2014 at 230 yards... entry and exit holes were very small though.. would like to experiment with the barnes or noslers someday... bought this gun a few years ago before safe act, it came with 6 full boxes of core lokts, a scope, sling and case for 150$ so im trying to use up the core lokts first...
  7. I do believe it is legal to order ammo online now, they revised the safe act and lifted that ban, "so im told". I havent tried to order ammo online yet though. I will attempt after the holidays
  8. I would love to do a bunch of gunsmith work since i have any machine needed to work with, but if the company found out i had a weapon on their "grounds", i think id have to look for a new place of employment.. Ive heard quite a bit of not so good comment on these powerbelts the last year or two.. ive never seen a sabot slide out, but ive only shot shockwaves out of my ML's.. I did miss a doe on a 0 degree evening a few years back.. could have been me for all i know but i never would have questioned the sabot... interesting
  9. Agreed. Not much AG here though,we have a couple corn and soybean fields within a couple square miles is all.. but we do have a lot of food plots around though. maybe ill go through last years pics and look for some of him, not sure if i have any or not. i like saving pics of every buck i get, even at 1.5, to try and find or make history with the bucks roaming our hills.
  10. i use rage hypodermics, 100 gr... no problems yet. this year I shot a doe in the spine somehow this october( a 1st for me),... it took alot but i removed the broad head, still whole, still sharp as can be, both the tip and blades... cleaned it up n spun it on another shaft and smoked my buck this november 7th with it as well. liver hit the buck, big entry, big exit holes, the broad head did some trauma Pic of the trauma from my buck
  11. my neghbor hit one of our big boys right in the shoulder this year with a slick trick, tracked for hours. arrow got about 6" penetration. long story short, no dead buck found. He was on trail camera consistently again within a couple days, until the other neighbor took him opening week of gun. He had a little limp but was chasing doe perfectly fine... meat was no good, gangrene got to him.. shoulders are a pain in the @$$.. !! Heres a pic of him from the back porch lol
  12. Im a Tool & Die Maker myself, and i have not shot in extreme cold temperatures. But i dont believe there to be much of a difference. A good quality scope shouldnt have a problem, they are built and designed for toughness anyways. but i would be more worried about the charge even firing in extreme temps(w/ muzzleloaders).. especially from moisture in barrels when they sweat going from room temperature to below freezing constantly and not getting fired.. Or trigger mechanisms/actions freezing up on any gun when parts have to move to activate for a shot.. maybe but, our living environments around here do not get as cold or hot as temperatures needed to expand or shrink steels.. i would like to experiment the extreme cold temps and Muzzle loader shooting. I personally keep my "loaded ML" in the vehicle or garage depending when im hunting next.. so its not not getting sudden change in temperature..
  13. Dang, i just noticed this thread. Wish i had seen it earlier.. Congrats to the lucky youngster
  14. not off the top of my head, besides checking kilburys or lacy's in arkport... there close by.. ive got a few seed company catalogs i can flip through.. was hoping thinning these woods would grow more "golden rod"...
  15. exactly, here is another pic.. either way. i wasn't sure of his age so he got the slip this year. the color pic makes me think 3.5, but for his sake, i'm sticking with 2.5... I actually have 2 bucks that look like this. both "should be 8's " but no brow tines on either... torn between 2.5 and 3.5 on both
  16. I'd say clover if your not worried for the lawn. Or wait til September 1st and mix clover seed with a cold tolerant forage oat seed. Oats grow anywhere just about..
  17. maybe you guys can help here... always thought this guy was spindly and probably 2.5.. but i finally put out a flash cam this year and he looks a bit nicer than all of the IR pics i get of him... just showing the difference i see between flash/color pics and IR pics.. either way he still got the pass from me atleast til next year.. You guys agree with 2.5 yr old?
  18. I was thinking the same as you guys are saying to, just needed the reassurance. Thanks Ill try and take some pictures maybe next time in there, before and afters are always fun. love doing chainsaw work. Just a first timer for hinge cutting .. looking forward to this. Thanks everyone.
  19. People around us will use all there tags and anyone elses tags, legal or not.. they do not care, wrong tag per season, wmu you name it. But it has a tag on it. (for everything) Start holding people accountable for their actions, and punish per crime committed, people may start to think twice..
  20. My buck after drying should make it, and i really have no care to enter it. im not looking for a prize or bragging rights. unless there becomes a study or research on book bucks to help with managing deer in this state, i will enter it. but until then i do not care to.. unless somebody can give me another reason, or a better reason to enter it, you may easily change my mind.. but i just dont really care if its entered or not..
  21. any certain direction to fall the tree? away or towards each other? or do you nott think it would matter?
  22. a 1 week gun season, would be a great start... even (2) 3 day or 5 day seasons, first starting Dec. 1st... im for it, im sure a lot of people would not be though
  23. I have a ton of honey suckle, brier, rose, elder berry, apple, blue berries, any berry, have a ton of fruit trees, the prior owner had everything planted all over this piece.. its really a beautiful property, but it is time now to thin and open these prime species back to light again.. before we lose them all, mostly mature trees, just trying to add some bedding cover while doing so. I will make sure the poplar get cut to the ground, im pumped to do all the manual labor, excersize is much needed lol. plus hopefully get a desired outcome when all is said and done. should have it all afterwards, water, cover and lots of food, (year round) maybe even plant some hemlock and cedars for winter time?
  24. My good friend has a camp in this exact area as well, Not lying at all about being "un" managed for deer. As for my area in Steuben we have many pieces that manage, but many that dont as well. still a good share of P&Y bucks to go around.. A mature southern tier buck, i believe, is one of the hardest to kill throughout the state,(big woods, lack of housing tracks) so i love to challenge myself at harvesting a mature whitetail in this state, given the fact of any deer is legal provided the season..but i live for the challenge, not everyone does.. if anyone ever gets the pleasure to talk to charlie alsheimer, ask his opinion on that. That coming from a man who has hunted around the country..
  25. This is the same as i do. im happy for what anyone wants to harvest. You work your life away, pay taxes, pay more... etc.. harvest what you like as long as its legally taken, i have no care, maybe share my beliefs and some info as well if requested.. other than that.. ill keep doing as i do, and they the same.. well said..
