  1. Strange.. I found a Coopers Hawk dead on my front stoop last week. Didn't seem to be any fatal wound on the hawk. Maybe it tangled with another rapture.
  2. Okay I get your point now... I agree
  3. Even more related when it comes to recurve crossbows
  4. Because limb width, draw weight and arrow speed are all related.
  5. Charlie was a friend. Met him 20 years ago when I started ANTLER magazine. We frequently did deer management seminars together back then. He was a gracious man. Some of you may not know, but Charlie was one of the original founders and officers of the NYS Big Buck Club. I had the privilege of photographing some of the same deer Charlie made famous years ago... he allowed me an exclusive day of picture taking at the Avery farm... his favorite place to photograph. Some of those deer were later moved to his property in Bath, NY in the late 1990's where he began new studies on whitetails to help promote the idea of Quality Deer Management as well as do continued research on the moon phase relation to the whitetail rut. He will be sadly missed.
  6. I've found that leaning into the shot with firm shoulder pressure and cheek firmly on the stock has always been the key. I've seen hunters that when too upright tend to rock back a touch with the recoil allowing the barrel to rise a bit as they shoot. Leaning in keeps the barrel down and steady after squeezing the trigger.
  7. but there is no distinction between how many hunters there are and how much they actually hunt... a hunter that hunts 1 day a season gets counted the same as one that hunts every day of the season. It could be that there are more hunters that just hunt less than they use to.
  8. At our club we can only accommodate 25 people... limited space seems to be an issue as well in other clubs.
  9. Thinking snow in the ADK's is not the driving force for many ADK hunters means you know absolutely nothing about hunting there.
  10. I often say that those who advocate for shorter seasons can do that voluntarily on their own... but it doesn't seem like there is much interest by those individuals in getting that ball rolling.
  11. Doesn't surprise me that hunting season is strictly just filling tags with any deer for some... just not for others.
  12. I would much prefer to lease land that is not my own for hunting... draw up lease papers signed by both sides to protect both interests... and still this can blow up in your face if you only have a year to year lease... or the owner decides to sell to a big hunting family. I have lands that I do hunt with verbal permission on occasion... but always knowing that hunting there can change at the drop of a hat. I have made it a point to secure many hunting spots so as to never have a worry for a place to hunt.
  13. I know this isn't what you signed up for... but it is what you should always expect as a possibility when you hunt someone else's land. Short of telling the fella exactly how you feel about everything that is bothering you... I don't see this getting any better in the future.
  14. Always been a "True Talker" guy... from the first custom one I got from the inventor, David Oathout, to the modern day one produced by Hunters Specialties. David sent a me a new call he produced for my birthday last year that is a good one as well, The "Say It All" deer call.
  15. HMMM so you're saying it won't put a big buck on every wall and bring an end to all deer conservation concerns ?????
  16. I wonder sometimes where you guys come up with this stuff... most of the guys I know that hunt north do the exact opposite because of the chance of snow that time of year being greater. Do you even hunt the Northern Tier? Seems to me people like to make claims about places they don't even hunt.
  17. It is so inundated with advertising that it's hard to know how good the content is because there isn't much.
  18. One difference is that the ADK's are 3.5 times the size making them more vast. In my opinion there is something more majestic about the ADK's that I don't get with the Catskills. But, for most hunters either one can be intimidating and considered big woods hunting. There are big bucks in both mountain ranges so far in that they have never been seen by a human and probably never will.
  19. I didn't have any problem, but I did it last January when it was first announced. I didn't want to get caught up in the mass rush to get on the site last minute like most permit holders are doing... which is probably causing the problems.
  20. Yeah I find that sometimes however we tend to get too involved in some of what mother nature is best at... with good intentions maybe, but with limited knowledge of what we're actually doing. But I agree that we might as well utilize that which we have invested in, or at least hold our noses and hope for the best.
  21. My sentiments exactly... most farms already have people hunting them... whether family or hunters vetted by the farmers themselves. Letting hunters have a free for all on private properties is what prompted owners to start posting their property in the first place. I would never trust the state to do anything that actually worked in my best interest as a land owner. That's just a recipe for disaster in my opinion.
  22. We can only hope they are starting to see the light
  23. This is a great video about how the tax bill actually will affect some different income levels around the country. Made a believer out of some skeptics. https://100percentfedup.com/cbs-hit-job-new-tax-bill-backfires-accountant-meets-middle-class-taxpayers-winning-video/
  24. I haven't had a cold foot in any temp since the introduction of Gortex and Thinsulate... but then again I am never stationary for more than a few minutes. I wear both leather and rubber boots depending on how much water I'll be crossing that day, and have gotten wet feet a few times and still my feet stayed warm. I'm just glad we finally moved past the old days of cheap K-Mart pack boots and bread bags!!
