  1. We have a had a few 200+ non-typicals in the past few years... one last year in fact. The truth is a really big non-typical is 300+. But a 200+ typical in NY? I suppose it's possible, but I wouldn't hold my breath looking for one. A 180 typical buck is nearly impossible to find. NY puts less than 1 B&C buck in the book a year on average and that is 170 minimum. The buck Chas0218 posted is not even close to 200. Anyone that has seen the Roosevelt Luckey head in person can see what it takes to be a 200 class typical whitetail... hell, there hasn't been many killed in the world all time.
  2. I know something... I'd shoot him all day long!!
  3. I have a custom made knife now, but i always liked the Shrade Old Timer... I have two older ones with the good American steel.. easy to sharpen and inexpensive.
  4. I did it before I went to wooden arrows... easiest way to optimize arrow weight and distribute it evenly.
  5. I do it all the time... it helps me get to know what movement I can get away with and what I can't. Mind you I still hunt on the ground with a recurve... so it is important to me to know what is doable in close quarters... 20 yards and in. One thing I learned is that deer can pick up small light reflections off the limbs of the bow that close... so I have to dull my limbs with a flat paint to eliminate any reflection

  7. Deer are not fond of the perfume smell that the Black walnut shell gives off... and the squirrels will scarf them all long before the deer can get at them. I had a tree in the yard and never saw a single deer near the tree let alone eating the nuts. I am sure if the nuts were around late in the winter and not already taken by the squirrels they might eat them as a last resort however.
  8. My friends and I left our shotguns with the principal... he kept them in his office until after school then we would hunt for grouse behind the school... much different times!
  9. "Hatchet" is a good read too...
  10. They actually made a movie of the book in the 70's... wasn't bad but not nearly as good as the book. I had a Mr. Becker in 5th grade as well!
  11. Population control is the first part of deer management. You either manage the habitat to handle the population or you manage the population to live in the given habitat all to establish the healthiest herd possible. The DEC tries their best to do that plus keep a whiny NY hunter population appeased as well... a monumental task.
  12. I know hunters that pass on does then shoot the first buck that comes their way then feel compelled to tell everyone they shot a small buck because they're a meat hunter... you don't need to justify shooting a legal buck, but I am always curious to know why you passed on the does if you're a meet hunter. I really think it is way more about ego than meat sometimes. The old " I'd cut my tongue out rather than have to tell my friends I didn't get a buck this year" kind of ego. The whole trophy hunting " let 'em grow" mantra rattling in everyones ears isn't helping either. You shouldn't have to categorize yourself as anything but a hunter.. period.

  17. Thanks Doc... can't believe I have never heard of it... might be something I'll have to put in my bag of tricks... goes too show that one is never too old to learn something new!
  18. What about some kind of fire starter? matches, lighter, flint &steel?... curious about the milkweed pods are you using that for tinder or is that a code name for something else?
  19. With a recurve I have to shoot on a fairly regular basis throughout the year just to keep the muscle memory which is important for shooting traditional archery instinctively. During the hunting season keeping regular tabs on brace height and checking wooden arrows for blemishes and straightness are also important. Most think you just grab your bow and go just because you're all practiced up, but a small change in brace height with a trad bow can send an arrow all over the place at 20 yards.
  20. Not much hoopla these days in the southern tier... but when my father was alive there would always be an early breakfast cooked by my mom, who loved getting up early with us to join in the excitement. Every year for northern tier all the guys arrive at camp Friday night and immediately the old deer stories start flowing ( along with cigars and some adult beverages ) from us older guys, with the younger guys listening intently... the excitement and anticipation of the next mornings hunt can be felt throughout the camp.
