NY is #1 Worst State to Hunt Whitetails
DirtTime replied to Renegade Hunter's topic in General Hunting
That article was posted a few months ago as well. Numbers don't add up for NY. But it must be right because it's in the web! NY has some great deer hunting and some great bucks. So saying we are the worst state to hunt deer is pretty bold, especially considering that site took facts from where ever and used them to make a list for all those states. I bet the person who wrote the article has never even stepped a foot on the soil of those states. It's pretty clear that the whole article is about 'trophy" hunting. If I was going to spend my money and hunt a different state, I would want to hunt moose, elk, muleys, grizzly bear, sheep, or some animal I don't have a ton of in my back yard. -
Can't be Elvis. All those fake gems on his suits would be around.

Well the link was very informative. Maybe it's Jimmy Hoffa?

Describe the techniques you used to attract deer this 2015 season
DirtTime replied to Rockspek's topic in Deer Hunting
I don't use anything. I do not have a tree stand anymore, I do not have store bought ground blinds, I don't have trail cams, I used Ivory soap to shower and wash my hunting clothes in ( then I put them in a plastic container with a spruce branch as cover scent ), and I went on my way. I never put my outer layer or hunting boots on while driving! When I get to my spots I open the window and let the cooler in for a few minutes, then I get out and put my actual hunting clothes on. I didn't use calls or deer attractant scents. I had does ( no tags ) within 20 feet of me. The small spike I let have a pass was within bow range ( 30 yards ) of me while I was carrying a rifle in the NZ. Why I let him go is a mystery to me even now, I think being a member here and letting the small ones pass has somehow got in my head. Subjective reasoning. I sit on the ground or my tree seat and use natural cover I can see through on public/state land. The private land I have access too I made blinds that blend into the natural terrain. Still hunting was a bust! I am really rusty at being super quiet walking the woods still hunting. My plan to fix this is hunting squirrel and getting how I step on the ground dialed in again. -
Perhaps you might calm down and post a link to the news story?

I haven't seen that one yet. Will have to check for it.

Wanna hear my story about being 33 and never hunting before?
DirtTime replied to Rockspek's topic in Deer Hunting
There are a lot of different ways to hunt. All can be very productive. Calling/rattling, still hunting, stalking, sitting, driving deer, using attractants, food plots etc................. All have a place and time. I think what Belo meant was don't concentrate all your efforts on one way and ignore all the others. To be a mentor you need to be a well rounded hunter and have some knowledge in at least most common of the ways we can kill a deer. As for me commenting, asking questions, I will apologize if they were taken as being negative. Even this post isn't meant to be negative or disrespectful, just offering advice on what a mentor is. -
Shell steaks from the grill, mashed taters, and corn.

I am still very curious now on your impression of shooting a gun. I am not trying to be negative, just asking. Why does it feel "violent" to you? -
Do you leave the stick up on state land The_Real_TCIII? I think theft and vandalism are a concern everywhere. After reading a lot of threads on here it seems more of an issue in certain areas then others. But taking precautions is is a must.

Yes I have, and the few emails I sent were replied to pretty quick. Phone calls are a different story. When I was trying to get information on a small state land area about what was legal to use hunting there ( shotgun only, bow only, or open to the county regs ) it took a few hours and talking to a lot of different people, but I was finally given a name of the LT. Ranger for my area. I left a message and 10 minutes later he called me back. It was cleared up fast. The next day I was called back by two of the three Rangers covering the area in question. I told them both the issue was resolved and I had the information I needed. Not one of the 10 or so people I spoke with were rude or nasty to me. All were pleasant and thanked me for taking the time to ask.

When in doubt, make a call or send an email.

Get a good lock if you plan to use a hang-on. Maybe even 2. I personally would not leave them up, especially with the climbing sticks attached to the tree. I would use a climber.

The good thing about the show is they do have an anti on there as well. The oldest daughters boyfriend/husband ( ? ) is a vegetarian and an anti everything. He always gets put in his place. Admitting he was WRONG! LOL

I have to mow this weekend too. Usually by this time lawn is brown. I usually never even rake until spring as most of the leaves rot and act to feed the grass. Ah, it's fine by me. For many years I would be really pi$$ed at this weather as it means a later start to snowboarding. This year, I am not so bothered. Just means I will go knock the snot out of some bushy tails on the weekends.

Congrats on a great first season! Strange that your 5 year old got you into hunting, but it worked out. I am also curious what you didn't like about shooting a gun. I have heard a lot of people say they didn't like the noise or the recoil. -
Yep, video on demand. I use that more then regular TV most of the time. I will have to check Netflix for it. I usually only watch movies on there. The show is great, even the youngest daughter on the show Eve is right with her dad on politics and gun laws.

That does suck. If ATV's aren't allowed ( which is the case on most state land I know of ) I would have just called local fuzz.
-
Bittersweet way to get the land but congrats.
-
No you are not wrong. The ADK's are the same in most areas. You may get an area that has a blowdown or small field that offers a few hundred yards, but they are not plentiful. Maybe over looking a small lake or pond you will get long ranges.

Anyone watch this show? I don't usually watch sitcoms, but I came across this a few months ago and have been catching up on VOD. I like the show. Tim Allen is hilarious and his jabs at the Govt. are spot on.

To me it's where there are no houses or towns for at least 40 minutes. Benson is big woods to me as an example.

Do they make the 7600 in 44mag? Just looked and I can't locate one. http://www.remington.com/pages/news-and-resources/centerfirebycaliber.aspx

When I think about hunting in any woods, I plan on never really having a shot past 100 yards. Not just "big woods", any woods. I chose my rifle on price, and how well it fit me when handling it. I also like the 7mm-08 as a deer caliber anyway, so that was a bonus. A 'big woods" rifle is whatever you feel like carrying that day, if you have more then one rifle. If you only have one rifle in a lighter caliber ( I do suggest nothing much smaller then a .243 though ), don't be fooled into thinking it's not enough for the big woods. It's plenty.
