Glad you are healing up. This weather is messed up, but don't let it keep you from getting out there. Good luck if you do head out.

Well said. I bet seeing him got the heart racing all the same.

My Niece takes her son on his first deer hunt!

Congrats! The huge smiles say it all. -
That's what hot sauce is for. LOL

Now it has ended. Not much to really say. I went, I saw deer, and had a great time putting in my effort. I did see more doe's then bucks, like seems the norm for this year. I did let a small spike take a pass and that's on me. It was early and I was hoping to see him again or something bigger. I did see some bigger bucks, or I should say I saw a$$e$ with horns as they ran away. But, I think going with the rifle this year over a new bow was good for me. I learned I am pretty rusty on a few things, and need to work them out before next deer season. I also learned after walking a lot of miles I am out of shape. Over all I don't care I only have tag soup again this year, it's only a bad season if you aren't out there. Last year at this time I was kinda bummed, only having the bow meant it was over until spring turkey. This year I can get out and hunt small game and start getting the rust really off. I may not have killed a deer but I had a great season!

G/f is making shepherds pie. Not a fan of it personally, but she likes it and she is cooking so it's all good.

Tag soup here as well. Rifle is cleaned and put away. Wasn't for lack of trying, or not seeing deer. Just didn't see many bucks. I let a legal spike walk second week of NZ, I knew as I did it I would regret it. Jumped a few while walking and no shot. Saw doe's and yearling's out the wazoo, no bow tag this year and no DMP's. I am OK with my season, learned a few things and enjoyed just being out there. Did I kill a deer, no. But I sure had fun trying!

That's the exact point I was trying to make.

Well, I am just going by what I was taught 30 years ago, and things I have read during those 30 years. I get the barrel is placed at a slight up-angle, and the scope is meant to aim down, that's why the bullet passes the line of sight twice. What I am trying to understand is if people think the bullet jumps up as soon as it leaves the muzzle.
-
A football compared to a bullet is like apples to oranges. I am not arguing, I am asking questions as to what I was taught and have read. I am asking to learn.
-
Right. It travels a distance on a direct path ( called flat trajectory? ), but does not actually defy gravity and go up. Correct?
-
So I guess that article I put the link to is BS?
-
You sure about that? The bullet still starts dropping when it leaves the muzzle. No sarcasm meant, just an honest question. http://www.rifleshootermag.com/shooting-tips/shooting_tips_ballistics_0303/

What makes a rifle a "Big Woods" caliber? The term woods in itself usually means shots under 150 yds ( most times less then 100 ). I have never been in the 'woods' where I could see more then 150. My 7mm-08 is more then enough for a deer in all the areas I hunted this season north and south. I can't see more then 100 yds in any of them. Would I use that rifle to try and hunt bear? Nope. I would get a 7mm Mag or a trusty -06. So.................... What is a "Big Woods Rifle"?
-
If I only had 5 days to hunt, I would do all 5 days in a row and make a camp somewhere. What I used would depend on the season. Only 5 days? Probably early bow so a tent camp would be comfortable. As for how? That would depend on weather. Sit, still hunt, who knows.

Look more like the dancing zombies from the Thriller video.

I would get permission and also check to see what weapons are legal to use there. Just because your county allows rifles does not mean that all public land in that county is the same. Two good examples are the Albany Pine Bush ( bow only for deer, shotgun using non-toxic shot for small game ( not during the deer season ) ), and Thatcher Park ( no rifles for deer, bow hunting in designated areas only ). It is better to play it right then play it wrong and get tickets, or worse, or a court date to get your gun back.

Can someone please define a "bad season"?

I posted this in another thread. I should have explained more what I meant. Scopes are set above the barrel and the cross-hairs are set to angle down. Hence giving what some people refer to as the "arch" of a bullet. Your line of sight is still straight, but due to the cross-hairs being angled a bullet crosses the scopes line of site twice. Which is why at certain yardage you might be high with a scope before the yardage you have it sighted to. Low after.

Same here. Small game was 14.

Very sorry about the loss and damage. Hopefully things will get resolved in a timely manner. Good that no one was hurt though.

I love the unlimited "Pop-Emails" that owners get with owning a site in this day and age. I have manners. But, the visible vapor that emits from the human body in cold temps cannot be stopped. Even with a mask. Our breath is warmer/moister then the air, so it makes that cloud. The only way way to really stop it is not breathing.

The recent speech...

Obama is a flake. We all know how he got into office. Most people wanted him out after his first term, so how did he get elected for a second? This country isn't run by the people we vote for, but, by the companies that support who is elected. Obama has less then a year left and he will do what ever it takes to destroy this country! The gloves are off people, you need to take a side and stand by it! I still choose freedom! -
Get a good quality compass, learn how to use it. Get topo maps from the specific area you want to hunt and learn to use the compass with the maps. The reason I say this in two separate sentences is because you can use a compass without a map, not wise, but you can do it. Take a compass reading from your vehicle. Always tell at least three people the area you will be in. Read the threads on "Big Woods Hunting" on this forum!!!!!!!
