  1. Place in Coxsackie has a big sign that the 25-50% off does not include any trail cameras. It was super busy back in the gun area, a lot of people taking advantage of the 25% off. They had some ammo on the shelves for shotguns but not much else. When I asked about ML stuff both guys working back there said they hadn't had any almost from the start, and hadn't got a shipment in months. Had some good deals on clothing, but most of it was for kids with the sizes they had left. Buy hey, if you want office furniture they got you covered!
  2. My phone goes on airplane mode as soon as we hit Indian Lake Village on the way up. It stays like that until we are headed back home and hit North Creek. I did that same thing as you a few years ago in a state campground that never used to have cell service. I come back from the jon and my wife tells me my phone went off. I raised an eyebrow and thought she was messing with me. I check my phone and sure enough, there was a text message from my sister. I messaged my sister back "Camping. Don't bug me!". Spur of the moment trips aren't the problem, I do them all the time. I don't plan out every minute of life, it's nice to wake up and say, I'm not sitting here all day I'm going out to converse with the trees. It's people who are clueless that are the problem, it's pretty much those same wankers that litter up the woods with bottles and other trash, which is a whole other irritating issue.
  3. While we were up at the cabin last fall on Indian Lake we were talking to the owner of the place. They have out in a WiFi connection for the cabins. I asked why. he replied that it just seemed like it was one of those things people kelp complaining about about not having. I belly laughed! I guess there's two separate ways to get internet there, one's free but sketchy and one you pay for and is stable. I didn't try the free one as I wasn't up there to play on my damn phone except taking pictures or video, and I certainly wasn't paying extra either. He also mentioned during the conversation that many of the locals were pretty upset that "officials" ( let's just leave it at that ) had voted to allow some cell towers to be put up in the area. I knew the answer but asked why all the same. To help authorities find dumb asses ( < -- my words, not his ) who go out on the trails with no knowledge of being in the woods. The reason many of the people are upset is because they fee; it screws up the landscape, and I agree with those people. There's nothing uglier then looking out at a mountain range and seeing stupid towers messing up the view. It really is sort of sad to me. It's not just the inexperienced people all the time either. I know plenty of people who have experience in the woods, but depend on electronics way to much. I ask people all the time who only use a GPS for navigation what of the battery dies, or you have no signal, or it breaks, or it gets wet.......... It's almost always an argument. Spare batteries this, or a SAT connection that. Then they get really burned up when I repeat, batteries can die or it can still break. I have given up trying to explain why even basic compass skills and a compass should be a part of your pack gear if you don't know the area. If it doesn't have a screen people don't want to hear it any more. The older I get the more I find myself saying this to a lot of people: "Stupid should hurt!"
  4. My wife used to be on some emergency alert list or whatever that would send emails to her when someone got lost, hurt, or worse while they were in the woods. I'm pretty sure it was through the DEC. She had to remove it because she was always getting some alert email with someone in the Catskills needing help. I read some of them and they ranged from legitimately being lost to hikers deciding to come up from NYC that are clueless. Most where people driving up to start a 6 mile hike at 4PM with nothing more then a bottle of Gatorade. Who does that? She would also get alerts for the ADK's, I won't even go into the stupidity I read in some of those alerts. The #1 funniest thing is reading some of the reports with people saying- "I thought there was cell service everywhere.". I may not carry a bug out bag while I'm out there, but I carry items I will need, or might need. A good first aid kit, flashlight, extra water, and a way to make fire if needed. Then again, I've been playing in the woods for about 40 years, learned some things the hard way, and have some common sense.
  5. The new paper they used this year is thinner then one ply toilet paper made out of old phone book pages. I haven't had an issue with any fading though. Maybe they used that erasable ink like in those Eraser Mate pens this year.
  6. One doesn't need validation to sit out a hunting season, but if your going to have reasons those are at the very top of the list.
  7. The odd part about this and the extended late season are a lot of people who say the deer season is already too long were OK with both extensions. If the seasons are already too long then why is it OK to extent them? I'm wondering if the earn a buck was put into place how many would stop hunting? I think more then a few would. I read and hear this sentiment from a good share of deer hunters, and there are even some right here on this forum. I said it, a few others have eluded to it, that these seasons are to try and get over populations of doe in some areas under control. Adding new or longer seasons isn't the answer. I would usually be all for anything that might get new hunters interested, I just can't get on board for this one. I also want to add, that if this was in my area I'd probably die laughing seeing someone out there wearing Bermuda shorts, one of those ultra light blaze orange vests, and pink flip flops trying to hunt deer.
  8. Hey, you are all forgetting a very important thing here! Someone needs to call the staff and alert them they need to get the "Official Live From The Woods" thread going ASAP! Atomic Fire Ball orders need to be placed! This puts a lot of pressure to rush around and get those items there was almost a month left to get!
  9. So you have a conundrum of even further perplexity making the complexity of your conundrum bewildering. Got it!
  10. I figured this thread would surpass 100 pages ( that was the number I had picked a couple weeks ago ), so I treated myself to a new ML at page 98. Thanks for not disappointing and keeping the arguments rolling! I'm getting some new gear I needed thanks to the bickering, but my wallet isn't liking it.
  11. I doubt the crossbow is legal, looks like just ML and vert bow.
  12. I guess for those who have to be color coordinated whatever color the hat is, the flip flops should match.
  13. This all just went out the window for people in certain WMU's. You now have just over a week to get ready and be out there!
  14. What's the matter @grampy, don't want to see people out there hunting in camo shorts and flip flops? Yeah, me either. I'm wondering if all the empty camp sites for the place the wife and I are camping next weekend in the ADK's will fill up faster then a buy one get two free ammo sale will run out of ammo.
  15. I wear hunting masks outdoors. Never used too but do now. When it's cold my face thanks me for it too.
  16. Yes. Does only, and only in certain WMU's.
  17. This season starts next weekend. Where did you get 4 weeks?
  18. I don't think there's going to be any extra tags handed out. Maybe in 4J, as I understand it you can already get extra DMP's for that WMU if you fill the two you get from the start.
  19. But that was solely on you for being selective and waiting. Isn't that why this early season was put into effect to begin with, because hunters weren't taking does? Take a doe early in the seasons we already have to get the freezer full and problem solved. No reason for this early season, at minimum we have two tags, the regular season buck tag and the Bow/ML antlered or antlerles. Add the second Bow/ML tag and DMPs and there's 5 tags, two for a buck and three for a doe. As I said, people not taking does is why this season was put into place. Being selective is a choice and if that leads to tag soup it was a choice a hunter made.
  20. 30 minutes before and after is a good change. I guess I'll be getting up a half hour earlier for each hunt to be in before the other dudes start shuffling into the woods. I do that now, but this just means I have to get up a little earlier. I always wear blaze orange during the gun seasons on public land so this changes nothing for me. This new early season? I think it sucks. I have made some wise cracks because I never thought it would pass, but yeah, I think it sucks.
  21. Thanks for the update. I think I'll still just use my Bow/ML tag for either for the early ML season up north. If I need to buy the other Bow/ML tag it's not far to drive up to the town hall. I picked up a tackle box to keep the powder, primers, and some cleaning stuff in. I looked at some travel boxes designed for this, and then stopped over thinking it and just went with the tackle box. I also put my spare shotgun cleaning rod in it. My wife uses those little pads for removing makeup, I figure those are lint free and will work just fine as cleaning pads to stash in there. Threw some pipe cleaners in there to use to get the powder pellets from their container into the quick loaders or the actual rifle. Finally got the tracking number so I can create a mission to be home and sitting by the window all day. I'm wondering about some things now. Storage may be an issue, no room in the safe, but I keep reading it can be stored in a soft case as long as I clean it properly and check it every couple weeks. Then there's the big one- the reason I have always ended up shying away from a ML, taking it in and out of the house and the temperature changes. This is more of a concern for the cabin trip then at home as I'll be hunting every morning then we'll be hiking the afternoons up there and I'm not leaving it in the truck while we're hiking. I reckon it should be fine if I unload it after each hunt.
  22. Only 26 days if you hunt the NZ.
  23. Not one credible news source has anything about this. A Twitter feed and some wacko jibberish sites are all there is. Do you happen to have a real news source that can be constituted as factual news? Or are you of all people now using Twitter as your news source?
  24. That other forum shouldn't be compared to this one freddy. It's two different places with different people. It's not so much a lack of moderators here as it is people who have to troll the boards using more then one account just to stir the pot. People should be able to police themselves and behave like grown ups, but many on here don't so that, myself included at times. Also a good moderator has to be non-bias and they have to follow the rules and lead by example. All members should treated equally and you can't just go after those you disagree with out of spite, which would be a huge problem with adding new moderators here. If you're going to slap jimmypeeshispants on the hand for something you best slap hankypoopants as well for the same violation. No special treatment for friends. Instagram is another platform that's killing forums. You can make a store over there, unload video directly and have live video feeds, you have control over your own page more or less, it's Facebook with a lot more freedom as far as what you can do on your page. Its not my thing but I can understand the draw of it for many.
  25. My wife was thinking of getting new hunting boots, so maybe I'll suggest she take a look.
