Happy Birthday! Can't think of a better way to celebrate than with a big ol'e knarly birthday buck!!! Best of everything to you today!

Although I've eaten tag soup in the past. I found it tastes much better with a slice of humble pie. I don't "have" to "kill" anything to have a great hunt/season. That being said, I am still hoping to help my grandson get his first deer. A nice young doe or shooter buck, it doesn't matter. He can shoot good groups out to 25 yards. But he is not comfortable shooting more than 15 yards at a deer. Normally that is no problem! As we do have a fair number of deer. And great set-ups. But for a variety of reasons, he has not been out hunting as much as I'd hoped. And that is fine. I'll never pressure him to go and always try to make our time together hunting, as fun as possible. Being that he is 12, his "hunting" season will end at the beginning of firearms season. So hoping this next two weeks, I can get him out there when the deer do show up!

Welcome ! And best of luck to you this season !

Right ! No Deer ! Two different properties . Four of my best proven set up's. And I haven't had a shot all season! My grandson and I did see a couple shooter bucks fighting last Saturday. But way out too far. I did pass on a couple little bucks early on, but mostly I've seen no deer at all! Got plenty of bucks on cam, mostly at night. Scrapes and rubs everywhere and new ones almost daily ! So far, this has been the most frustrating season in years for me. Seems like no matter what spot I hunt, the deer are somewhere else. But that's hunting! I'm still pumped, and expect to close the deal, every time out! Next couple weeks are going to be good with quite a few days to hunt. The fat lady hasn't sung yet and it aint over till it's over! If anyone else out there, is having a frustrating season too. Stay positive ! I am! It can all change in a heartbeat.

Always cool to see a bear! I've seen them many, many times. Even had a couple real close encounters from a ground blind. But for one reason or another, I haven't pulled the trigger on one........Yet.

Killed my first few deer in blue jeans and a green wool sweater. I still have that sweater! Put lots of flannel layers under it when it got chilly! Like most of the guys, who've seen a few hunting seasons. Treebark was my first camo. I remember thinking , no way a deer can see me with this stuff on! But they did!!.....If I moved. So I learned that no matter what you wear, as long as you are still, the deer usually will not see you. My camo now, is a mismatched conglomerate of stuff bought on sale or given to me as a gift from my wife. Geared way more towards comfort than style .

Over the years I've one lunged three deer. One lived and my buddy shot him the following year! The other two were recovered. Both of them within three hundred yards of the hit. And both were recovered after letting them go overnight . From your pictures and description , I really think he's dead and you will find him tomorrow . Best of luck to you.

My wife's snicker doodle cookies are the absolute BEST! Followed closely by her oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip. I don't have a beer belly, I have a cookie belly! Sorry if I gave out her recipe's she would have to kill me.

The Ever Calm , may work as well as it did in the early season or may not. See, during the pre-rut and rut, I change set ups from a feed to bed pattern, to a get closer to the does and travel funnel pattern. Both of these areas already have a good deal of natural deer scent. My way of thinking is "why mess that up"? Just my opinion!
-
Yup, I did use the ever calm with good results, for early season when the deer were in a feeding to bed pattern. Now during the pre-rut and rut I change set-ups. And I will try to be as scent free as possible, to keep things as natural as I can. This time of year there is "plenty of natural deer scent" in the woods. I try to use that to my advantage!

I'll have the next three days to hunt! Going to some set up's that Iv'e been saving for the pre-rut. Looking to turn my luck around! And if I can get my grandson out of bed at 4am he will be joining me! -
Haven't used scents in many years now. I do just as well if not better without them. I just use more common "sense" instead of "scents"!
