Nice one! Hope he's around for ya this fall!

Nice pic's Joe! You are getting better with your photo's. Keep em coming! The first picture of the doe, is my favorite of the group. The running deer is cool too.

Myself, I always look forward to a little hunting snow!

In my humble opinion, NY gun laws are terrible. But hunting in NY is in no way the worst. If you hunt with bow and gun, the deer season lasts for two and a half months. Is there a booner roaming every property, no. But as seen on this sight, some very respectable bucks call NY home. Given the time we have to hunt them and all the various weapons we can legally use, from longbow to high powered rifles. There is no shortage of tools we can use to get the job done. I understand some areas of the state have more deer than others. But even on most public land, shooting A deer is not impossible if you put in the time and effort to be successful. Also, having seen most of the lower 48 states myself, NY is one of the most beautiful states in the nation. With mountain vista's, rolling hills, valley's, farm fields, big woods and small woodlots. Is it the best? That is for everyone to decide for themselves. But in no way is it the worst.

I've heard this year will be a banner year for ticks in most areas. As the snow pack we had, kept them insulated from the bitter cold.

Anyone Going After Woodchucks Soon?
grampy replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
The farm I hunt has a ton of them. I also have a new 7mm-08 that I would like more trigger time with. Yeah, it is overkill, but will be fun with chucks out to 200 plus yards. -
Nice buck, wish we knew what did him in.

This year will be my 30th bow season. started out traditional then switched to compound and last year the crossbow. With the conditions the OP stated,I would use my crossbow. At 6.5 pounds and balanced very well, with a sling,it's perfect for walk and stalk hunting. And very accurate to my max bow range of 30 yards. Although I did not kill a deer with it last year,I did have opportunities hunting this way that I chose to pass. My heart and soul will always be my compound bow. To me,it's an extension of my body and nothing feels more comfortable in my hands. Over the years,I could have many times, bought the latest and greatest new bow. But my old Mathews MQ-32 has always done it's job flawlessly, when I did my part right. But over the last couple of years, shoulder problems make shooting my bow painful. So I bought the crossbow. I see it as just another tool to hunt with. And just plain fun!

10 days, 3200 miles, 1 public land Osceola (long and pic heavy)

Congratulations on a very nice bird! Your hard work and persistence paid off. I really enjoyed the story and pictures of the hunt. Thank you for sharing with us! -
My wife and I eat a lot of leftovers too. Just hate to throw out good food. My two favorite leftovers are chili and goulash. They just get better each time they are warmed up!

Hope they are caught and prosecuted. Poachers are scum of the earth. Other than cheap thrills, why would anyone poach deer at this time of year. No antlers, plus they are very thin, and in the worse shape of the year!

So do you think NYS will expand the crossbow season

Locator Calls for St Lawrence Valley Turkeys
grampy replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Turkey Hunting
I still have good luck with the "who cooks for you....who cooks for you..aaalllllll" barred owl call. We have a good population of barred owls here. And sometimes, they will do the calling for me,to locate a roosted bird. Have also used the crow and peacock call with success from time to time. But my best locator call is to use a single reed mouth call, and make a high pitched "Keeee.....Keeee.....Keeee" with each Keeee getting higher in pitch. It's kind of like the key key run call but more drawn out, higher pitched and louder. It's something a bit different than what everyone else uses. So kinda keep it to yourself. -
Happy Birthday! Enjoy your day!

Yup. Like the saying goes,a bad day fishing beats a good day at work! Still have ice and snow on the banks of the local creeks here. I know,no excuse! But I'll give it a week or two and give it a try then. Good luck to all who wet a line today!

grampy replied to MACHINIST's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Have you ever shot one? Don't see how crossbows will be the death of anything. Except maybe a deer. -
I'll have no problem taking out a turkey this spring. I've had a tough winter too! Nice pic's WNY.

I don't think Jesus likes me. That's why I take shots within reason or closer. -
I agree with ya Doc. My two cents, for what it's worth. I don't care if another hunter dresses in the latest and greatest Scent Loc camo,or runs through the woods in a loin cloth. As long as it is legal,I don't care if you kill a deer with a rock or a howitzer. And I don't care what the rock or howitzer looks like either. I'll hunt my way,and you hunt yours. As long as it's within the law,I don't care how another hunter goes about getting their game. We are all individuals, with different tastes, opinions, backgrounds and preferences. But we are also hunters and gun owners and united we should stand.

One pin HHA for many years has worked very well for me. I practice out to 60 yards and just know where to hold. Lost a few arrows in the beginning figuring where to hold though. Under hunting conditions 30 yards is my max. With the one pin I can hold dead on from point blank on out to 23 yards. Then just a slight raise gets me out, to my max 30. I like to keep everything as simple as possible, and this set up has worked very successfully while under pressure. To each their own, use whatever you have confidence in. Confidence will breed success.

Fire and ice! Absolutely fantastic!

Another very nice piece there Robby. You seem to have a knack for making the plain and rugged look beautiful.
