Who uses snow camo when there is snow on the ground
DanD replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Bought a Cabelas snow camo jacket two years ago on a 60% discount. Wore it for the first time last year, and it seemed to confuse deer. I was able to shoot a nice 9 point from the ground while I was wearing it, but I can't be sure how much the snow camo was a factor. -
Gasket on my foodsaver disintegrated after 1 year. After going in circles with customer service, I gave up... I wouldn't spend my money again on a foodsaver.

Fantastic buck! Congrats!

Got in the stand Monday in the northern zone. Put the clip in my gun and tried to rack one in the chamber....bolt was still in the gun case in my truck....dohh

Down here in 8X (Steuben County), I know McCarthy hill state forest gets overrun the first weekend with guys from PA, but after that it tends to clear out. I honestly can't remember seeing a single guy after the opening weekend, but there were always one or two trucks around. I also know the same applies to the Erwin Wildlife Management Area (8T I believe), but it is also significantly larger than any other piece of public that I hunt.

Growing up in PA, I never saw anyone carry anything other than a rifle for deer hunting, and my first rifle was an old Winchester model 70 in .243. After moving to NY for college and staying in the state because I LOVE paying taxes, I had to learn about slugs guns and purchase one. I settled on an Remington 870 SPS SuperSlug which has been a deer leveling machine for me. I don't know if it's the funky stock, but that gun feels far more natural for me to shoot than any rifles in my cabinet. Even when visiting my family for PA deer season, I still take that shotgun out which prompts them to laugh every year. Maybe I'm wired differently (my wife would tend to agree ) than most hunters in my preference of a shotgun over a rifle for deer.

Not including weekends....November 5,6,19,20,21,23,30 and December 7th This also assumes the fun police (the Mrs.) doesn't reign in my fun

Never too many! You could add a 25-06 for good measure.

Summit Goliath; however, I'm starting to like my lone wolf alpha with XOP tree sticks more as it allows me to get in nearly any tree as opposed to the straight limbless trees with the Summit.

What time of day was the picture taken?

old man got in the tree opening morning only to realize his release was in the truck.

I stand corrected on 8T. I just assumed it was PP REQ and didn't even try to draw for a DMP. I'm down in the Corning/Painted Post area near the 8X line. We usually hunt 8X since my dad can draw tag as an out of state resident.

Do you have an all time favorite trial cam pic ?

I'll never understand why 8T is PP REQ. The DEC says the number of deer in the WMU is low; however, my trail camera pictures (on public land) of groups of 4+ does tells a very different story.

Pretty slow season for me until the Last Saturday 12/9 when this guy came from the opposite direction of the drive we were doing. Even with his busted up rack, I'm pretty happy with him. Should make a nice European mount after muzzleloader season is over

Anyone ever hunt Catharine Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area in 8W for deer? Curious what kind of hunting pressure it gets since it's so close to downtown Watkins Glen...

I haven't heard of this. I have heard debates of adopting an early muzzleloader season in the southern zone for does only, but that hasn't gained a ton of traction.

Starting to get the itch for a new rifle again. Rifle will be primarily field hunting deer (200-300 yard shot not out of the question) and varmint/predators. I have always been enamored with a 25/06 Rem with it's flat trajectory and low recoil; however, the 257 wby is starting to catch my eye. I wouldn't be reloading for the gun so ammunition cost is a slight factor, but I don't anticipate chewing through more than 2-3 boxes per yea in a busy year. Curious as to everyone's thoughts from barrel life, recoil, meat damage, etc. between the two calibers. I was looking to get a Browning X-bolt if 25/06 or a Weatherby Vanguard S2 if I opt for the 257. Other rifle recommendations are welcomed.

Starting to look at entering the field of crossbow hunting. I've done a little research, but I figured I would ask the masses for their opinion. I was looking at something middle of the road and a recurve for easy of maintenance. Crossbow will be primarily used out of a treestand as well. The Excalibur Grizzly has been on my radar. Anyone have any thoughts on this bow or something similar? Not looking to break the bank, and I'm not set on the recurve just seemed like an easy entry point for someone like myself.
