Not bashing rage but I have 2 buddies that shoot rage both have lost deer using them. I'm not blaming the head just saying they lost deer using them. They were also close to first production run.

It's that time to start rattling boys! I usually give it a shot about an hour before sunset. I do a couple sequences about 10 minutes apart.

I wasn't saying everyone but it seems like there are a lot of people on here that just jumped all over the O.P. for giving the details for him to get help for the recovery of the animal. He hasn't done a lot of this bow hunting thing by the sounds of it. Maybe having a kid of my own now and fully knowing he might make a bad shot when he starts hunting whether not enough experience or deer fever. I don't know maybe I am getting soft with my old age.

DEC Timber Rattler Snake Den in Bath, NY - Video
chas0218 replied to HectorBuckBuster's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
That snake at :29 seconds is freaking big. It is on there a few more times at least I hope it isn't multiple snakes. -
A little dark in your eyes can be completely different than O.P. A little dark could have very well of been before sunset especially on an overcast day. Why is everyone so quick to chastise a person? Not to mention by the O.P. grammar and spelling they are young around 16 years old I would bet, and a first time hunter. Nothing like attacking a young kid to push them out of the sport. Give yourselves a pat on the back for being that guy! Give the kid some advice and be on your way. Everyone has made bad shots. I made a bad shot 2 weeks ago hit a branch on a bedded doe and it got her just in front of her hips arrow stayed in her. Tracked her 1/2 mile with minimal blood and lost her, it happens. That was the first in 8 years we all make mistakes hopefully the kid learned from it.

True talker all the way it is my tried and true call. I have a few just because they are cheap and work great.

No chasing yet in my areas but have seen a number of large scrapes and rubs. Had 5 doe walk past me last night and no buck to follow. I saw him while I was walking out only saw the top of his rack over the 5' golden rod.

I prefer to only make 1 trip and if I am hunting that area often I drag the deer guts and all to an area where it won't effect the deer as much. I would rather not stink up the area more than needed.

i feel taken i can't see the comments

Either way killing or relocating deer will be back in that area in 1 year if not sooner. The less pressure on deer the more likely they are to show up. If they feel safe there they will always find a way to be there unless they use a high fence to keep them out.

Hit by car deer/ what would you do ?
chas0218 replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
Call law enforcement if you can't get a hold of DEC, make sure they shoot it in the head. Many try to shoot it in the neck which does nothing instantly but puts the deer through more misery. Last year while in stand I heard a car hit a deer I watched from my stand with binoculars the guy called the police. They came and shot it 9 times in the neck before it died and took about 10 minutes before the police officer left which I am assuming the deer was dead at that point. -
Yes it is an expression but from what the police have told me if they are trespassing and put their object (tree stand, shooting shack) on your property without permission then you have every right to keep it. Look at those that leave tree stands on state property DEC has every right to keep your personal property because it is not supposed to be there. I didn't want to take it that far I just wanted the guy to know he was on private property he didn't have permission to be on and needed to move his stand. Stands are expensive to replace and don't feel the need to screw the next guy out of money. Now after he was being disrespectful to my grandfather and my family I wish I had kept it and told him to piss off.

He gave him permission, I didn't say he had permission to be there...

How is it hunter harassment when he put a tree stand on our land he didn't have permission to be on? I said he was into the hedgerow on our property. That alone warranted me taking down his stand, I had no intention of keeping it and did not damage his property in anyway although possession is 9 tenths of the law and according to the local law enforcement I could have. Later that week when I found my stand missing I called me neighbor and he said no one had permission from that season to be on his property and they had previously kicked him off. The below is not addressed to you. Just how I feel about a situation I had. So yes he was trespassing on our property and neighbors. The neighbor had given him permission in the past. Property lines are property lines when you cross them 1' or 100' you are still crossing them and need permission. That is how I hunt and conduct myself with other peoples property and expect other people to do the same being the law and all. I get a kick out of people "its just a little on someone else's property" when did they start to pay taxes on someone else's property or maintain that property. My family has worked hard for what we have and don't appreciate people that try to take advantage of others.

Get a camera on that!
-
No he "had" permission on my neighbors property. They had previously kicked him off but he didn't care and trespassed anyway.
-
Yup happened to me. We have a hunting shack that my grandfather uses during gun season. The neighbor gave a guy permission to hunt his land. No problem until he put up a tree stand 20 feet from our shooting shack. Close enough for me to pee on it (the bottom obviously). Not to mention he also put it about 10' into the hedgerow cutting every tree in front of the stand 6" and smaller. We took the stand down and put it in our barn waiting for when he came back. We told him that isn't how we hunt around here and next time he wont be getting it back. He walked our property trashed several stands and stole one other. Complete trash. Don't jump a guys spot because "you heard big deer are around here."

I don't think I would make myself too invisible if they were pheasant hunting I would be wearing some orange. I have heard horror stories in Middlesex where people peppered trees with bow hunters in them because they were full camo and they couldn't see them. Wear an orange hat or something or you might not be lucky to have them talking at the base of your tree.

My grandfather used rifled slugs and they shot fine out of the rifled barrel but you will get your best accuracy out of the sabots. I am using my rifle more and more because the price of sabots are outrageous. I should add his gun was a newer 870 express magnum in 20 gauge and hastings barrel.

Rifle Caliber- Which would you choose?
chas0218 replied to pitweiler's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Actually it is the other way around. Most think that, but because of its physical size and amount of time the bullet is still in the air the larger heavier bullet is less resistant to environmental variables (mostly wind, and gravity) -

But too you are gaining a lot more speed which can make up for the loss in weight, energy wise. I agree 30-06 is tried and true but depending on the sought after game 30-06 can be over kill at times like using a .300 Win. Mag. on whitetails. You can use it but in my opinion way too much gun for whitetails even mule deer. I thought you were talking about the same gr. bullets for .308 and 30-06. -

I still say a 25-06 or the reliable .270 win. would be the cat's meow. .250 bullet with the powder of a 30-06 will get the job done on almost anything. The 25-06 will be effected less by environmental variables than the larger calibers.
