I must be a tweener. Not a meat hunter or a rack hunter. I try to get a larger buck every year if I can, and have yet to get a monster. Passed a 2.5 year old 8 point last weekend, but if I was deerless for the season, I'd take him in November/December. In that situation, I'd rather take a doe, but not going without venison for a year just to wait for the bruiser which is hardly ever seen in my neck of the woods. I work a ton, usually take the first week off, and try to get a deer that week. If not, my chances for hunting become very limited due to work schedules and family obligations. I'll get out 3-4 days after that first week. The only thing that I have any issue over is bone collector friends of mine that will put down my method of hunting over theirs. I shot the best 8 point of my hunting career two archery seasons ago, but because the rack wasn't outside the ears, (only to the outside of the ears - aged 2.5 years by the taxidermist), I got a bunch of "I would of passed that", "Think of what he would have looked like next year". Said by the same person who hasn't taken a deer in 4 years, and takes the entire hunting season off from work and family. I don't put down his method, but I certainly don't care for him putting down my method as inferior. It's a legal deer, and I'm not laying waste to the local herd by taking it. I take one or two a year, (no young-uns) and they're all trophies to me. But between the choice of that little six or no venison for an entire year, the six will be hanging in my barn and I'll be very happy with it.

When I built my house on what used to be my deer camp, it was roughly $10,000 all total to get it to the house. They had to extend from the last pole on the road at that time, which was about 900 feet.away.

I had my property logged in winter/spring of 2007. The logger didn't do top removal (and reflected it in the payout), but gave me contacts for "top removers" that would either pay me or do it free depending on their quote. The first time I walked through it after it was completed, I thought I had made a mistake having it done. The woods looked like a small nuke detonated on the land! I did not have the tops removed except for some firewood for myself for a couple of years. I probably didn't even take 5% of the tops. The following fall was the best deer hunting we had ever experienced, and over the 07/08 winter we found an active bear den in a particularly nasty area of tops. It took a couple of years to get all that succulent new growth growing and now it's thickened up tremendously. Previous to 2007 you could see a squirrel running on the ground at 150 yds in most places. Now the only 150 yd look I get is in the open fields! Small game, particularly rabbits and grouse have increased exponentially. A grouse was a rare sight pre 2007. Now I can bump 10 in a half mile walk. I would do it again in a heartbeat and let the tops lay!

I've checked in with the NY Firearms thread for updates to the various lawsuits to either change the SAFE law or repeal it entirely and have seen no new info for weeks. Googling for updates in general finds me only articles that are old. Coupled with that, it looked like low turnout for the Albany rally this week, especially compared to earlier this year when the sting was fresh (I didn't go this week, but would've if I had any chance of getting out of work). I'm starting to get pessimistic about the chances for getting this wreck of a law changed. The last I knew, Tresmond has a fairly important court date today, maybe they'll be some information flowing from that to get me perked up again. Anyone else starting to get the same feeling as me? If not, tell me to buck up or something!!

Planning on stopping by this weekend. Saw an ad in my local paper that they have some open house thing going on this weekend.

That's a good question, I would think it would be like handgun laws. What does a non-res have to do to legally bring a handgun in from a state that doesn't require you to register them?

From the Governor's FAQ site on the NY SAFE act. http://www.governor.ny.gov/2013/gun-reforms-faq Q: If I modify my gun by removing all design characteristics that makes it an assault weapon, do I have to register it? A: No. If you modify your gun so that it is not an assault weapon, you do not have to register it. The modification must be permanent however. This includes, for example, removing the bayonet lug by cutting or grinding, grinding off the threads on the barrel, removing the foregrip so that it cannot be readily reattached, or any change that cannot be reversed through reasonable means. Seems like a bolt on/bolt off grip may not meet the "cannot be reversed through reasonable means" part, but it's encouraging.

Hi All, I was wondering if anyones knows, or cares to share an opinion on this; My S&W M&P 15 does not have a collapsible stock (it is adjustable with tools), does not have a supressor or brake, and does not have a bayonet lug. It does however have a pistol grip. So if I'm understanding the law correctly, if I remove the pistol grip, it's no longer banned? There can't be this loophole, can there? Hoping...

For once my timing was right (or at least I still feel that way), as I was considering buying an AR for a year or so and I purchased a Smith and Wesson M & P the saturday before election day. I was worried about Obama's 2nd term agenda if he got reelected. At the time I wasn't worried about Cuomo. As much as I want to say "I won't do it", I will most certainly register it when the system is set up to do so. I couldn't imagine being arrested and jailed. If I was, it would be for not registering, not because I own an AR. And then they'll take all of my guns anyways, and I would have given them the perfect reason to do it. I will not fall into that trap and let them win the easy way. I've signed every petition I've seen and I feel the legal wrangling wil take quite some time to iron itself out over this middle of the night travesty. I'll stay out of jail and live to fight another day - through the legal system. And now that I've got the AR all decked out the way I want it, I must say that I love it. I mostly bought it for hunting coyotes, so in that situation, 5 rounds was my limit anyway.

Low in 8T, but higher in neighboring units? I live in 8T and see does every day. I'm not in a hurry to try for one, but it seems odd that they are significantly higher in neighboring units.
