Just one comment on calling...you need to be very careful using the grunt call as the season progresses. On a number of occasions I have used the grunt call in an effort to bring a buck I could see into range only to have them bolt at the sound of the call. Once a subordinate has had his butt kicked by a dominate buck he usually isn't going to stick around. The doe bleat works better in my opinion. About 5 or 6 years ago while set up just inside the woods had a buck in a winter wheat field about 100 yards away. Hit the bleat and he immediately came running in my direction. Got to the edge of the woods, stopped & began making a scrape. Gave me a nice broad side shot at about 20 yds. When the rut is on and they are looking for does... if I call at all I use the bleat. Just one opinion.

That's about as good as it gets!

Best one I found... Only need one call instead of carrying a grunt tube & a can.

Probably won't get a shot at him because they all seem to use this area at night. I have a ton of buck pictures from here over the years and all of them are before or after shooting hrs. Come daylight they are no where to be found. Just hope I am in the stand when & if he does show up during the day!

LIVE from the woods 2016 Edition! - 7th Year, lets make this happen...

Congrats Elmo...any bow kill should be congratulated...As far as tagging you can use whatever you have. The bow tag is for either sex OR if they are under 3" you can use a DMP. If you use the either sex tag you cannot shoot a buck for the remainder of the bow season. -
Sittin around camp with the guys and can't get out?

Can't answer that one....I assume they anticipate the would be sterilized by the alcohol that MAY be consumed during the game. I wouldn't want to play it but I bet it would be fun to watch!! -

According to the 2016/2017 book page 34 there are no changes. Haven't heard if they are planning on doing anything different in the future or not. Probably not on the high priority list.

I personally won't hunt in the rain simply because I don't want to get wet. As far as ethics I think it should be the same if it is raining or not. If you are not sure you should not make the shot. If you do make the shot it is your obligation to follow up on that shot regardless of how long it takes, how far it goes, or what the conditions are.

If hunting "public" land I personally try to stay away from the crowds and if I go to an area and others are there I go look for a new spot. That being said I have been in an area by myself and had other hunter(s) come into me and set up less than 50-60 yards away. When that happens I just get up and move or leave completely. I don't mind hunting with people I know but not to keen on someone I do not know. Why some would set up that close is beyond me but it could have been they did not know or see that I was there. If they can't see me at that distance(during gun) I don't want to be near them anyway. I don't leave notes..serves no purpose in my opinion. The thing I would make sure of is you make sure all involved have a compass and or a gps and know how to use them. If I hunt with more than myself we use radios to stay in contact. Sometimes the cell phone service is not to good or unavailable and you need to know where each other are at ALL times. Hope you have a safe & enjoyable season with your son

Pretty nice collection of beards to!!!!!! -
Just saw my first legitimate scrape of the year today and a couple of fresh rubs. Nothing like I have seen in the past this late in the month. I can only assume it is going to get better since the farmers are finishing up picking their crops. I have hunted 8w in the past and it is definitely a hard area to hunt. I always found it to be best around the week of Thanksgiving....but just like everything else things change

If it is a rough bark tree it could be an ash. Leafs look identical to a beech.

I still say the easiest way to fix all this is: one deer season from Oct. 1st-Dec.20th like it is now So many tags allowed per hunter and you are allowed to shoot them with your legal weapon of choice anytime during the season.

Page 18, center column, under "Manner of Taking" in the2016-2017 Hunting Guide regulations you should have got when you bought your license. If you didn't get one you can always pick one up because they are free. They can also be read on-line at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8305.html -
