  1. It kills me that I have yet to hear a grouse drumming. Is there a best time of day?
  2. @Bionic 24C is fairly extensive so you should be able to find some interesting info. As Dinsdale says, the classified is large and moves very fast. The Campfire section of 24C is a tough read - lonely internet constructs trying to out stupid each other. Proceed with caution. Have you seen Alone? The last season was won by Canadian brothers (you'll probably want to kill them a few episodes in) and the first few seasons were set on Vancouver Island. Beautiful place but a tough slog with the continual wet. Newfoundland is gorgeous. Fair warning, a day in the woods without DEET and headnetting and you'll be leaping off a cliff. Great people; great food. My wife's family are all Newfies. Try bushcraftusa and there may be some specific Canadian material.
  3. @ATbuckhunter Like most things in fly fishing ... it depends. The best way to determine if they have too much hackle is to fish them. If they don't work, begin to snip off pieces of hackle until you find something the fish like. I've done this with dry flies on nymph rivers. @chrisw You would do well in Iceland with those fluorescent flies.
  4. Try http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/forums/ for a general, extensive and popular forum. The sister site - https://www.flyfishing.co.uk/ is great for the UK, Europe and Scandinavia. The Destination Fishing subforum is very good. http://www.washingtonflyfishing.com/forum/ is the place for spey and two-handed casting though it also covers off general fly fishing and has a great classified section. If you're ever going to NorCal take a look at http://www.kiene.com/forums/index.php I spend a lot of time on https://www.styleforum.net/forums/ which is essentially men's clothing but has excellent lifestyle subforums.
  5. If by some miracle an idiotic blind and deaf turkey impales himself on my arrow, you're going to have some real bragging rights.
  6. Thanks for the tips. I have a number of those game claws and may try one. Feel free to mention favoured calls as well. To clarify, my plan is to go turkey hunting. Turkey killing may be an entirely different challenge.
  7. I misunderstood. Lucky dog.
  8. @WNYBuckHunter Warfarin poisoning is a terrible way to die so the least I would do is give your vet a call to let him know your dog ate some. @wooly Nice pics. Can you come to my place and document all the cute animals?
  9. With apologies to Thoreau: "Many men go turkey hunting with a recurve all of their lives without knowing that it's not turkey they are after ... it's frustration." Thanks for the tips.
  10. I have a ton but they are buried under 20" of snow. Tonight's forecast - 21 degrees and snow. At this point, it looks like I may not get into my place until June.
  11. It's interesting how many guys started later in life. I'm also one of those as I really have just begun. Grew up with no hunters in my family or immediate friends. Can't say that I was anti-hunting but I definitely didn't understand it -- the supermarket seemed so much easier -- and it was only when I started fly fishing in my '50s that I began to look at hunting in a new and appreciative way. Buying an upstate property cemented it. It's a little challenging as I am more or less figuring it out on my own but I think I'm up to it. This forum has been a great and generous resource.
  12. I have a theory that he only has so many words available and has to parcel them out a few at a time so he doesn't run out.
  13. I think that may be a too simplistic answer to what allowed and compelled this particular kid at this particular time to pull the trigger. That said, I don't have the answer. Works for me.
  14. C'mon, dude, it wasn't "insensitive." It was a pissy and personal attack on a teenager from an adult professional using her microphone to broadcast to thousands. She should be seriously sanctioned because of the stupidity of someone in her position going after the kid in that manner. I said earlier that I would have fired her and I spoke too quickly. But I think her non-apology apology may have warranted it. I love good whisky, used to love pot, think Kumbaya is a great song and have no issue with buying the world a coke. We're all media whores. Or our internet constructs wouldn't be arguing with each other on public media. If there was a pack of flesh-eating Rottweilers running around it must be satisfying to know that your dick is safely in your hand. The left hardly is alone in capitalizing politically on a national tragedy. I sometimes forget that there are kids who post here as well. I should have gone easier on him.
  15. If that's the case then go after Schumer or the other adults in the room. Picking on the way this kid looks or his GPA or any of the other asshole comments that have been made everywhere is swinging at the low hanging fruit.
  16. They're not making adult decisions in so far as their opinions have no bearing on anything. They're just kids who are saying "holy shit, that weird kid just walked into school and killed 17 of us." It's not much of a stretch for the next words out of their mouths after "please don't shoot me" to be "guns bad."
  17. I was referring to myself. Interesting that you reference a fort in the woods. I have a show about a Catskills' woodsman and as a closing line, he says "if you and I were 12 year-old-boys we wouldn't be talking about any of this stuff (politics), we would grab a hatchet and be out in the woods building a fort. The spirit of the woods isn't ancient, it's young." So here's to the misguided, more balls than brains, confused, deluded, passionate and wild kids. I wish I still was one. @greg54 Thanks for the intelligent and well-reasoned contribution to the discussion.
  18. "Galactically stupid" is a good expression. I may steal that. If you want to debate a kid, go for it. Not sure if it's much of an accomplishment. But none of this warrants a personal attack. If you can't out-debate a kid and have to resort to personal insults, then you shouldn't be on the stage. I understand what internet bravado is and was more or less ignoring it all until the Ingraham comment. A broadcaster using her position to mock a kid personally because she disagrees with his politics is a little beyond. I would have fired her for that and doubly fired her after the mealy-mouthed apology. It was galactically stupid.
  19. Wait another 20 years, Elmo. Not only will you still not know anything you'll go out of your way to prove it to everyone you meet.
  20. So you believe he is being used but still, you want to attack him in person? The courage it takes to say that on a forum. Not really. Socially liberal. Outside of kids, animals and perhaps close relatives, I really don't care who you sleep with. And you want to marry said non-kid, animal or relative? Knock yourself out. Past that, I'm pretty sure I skew conservative. But those labels are so mind-numbingly limiting I don't use them. But if they help you, enjoy. How does that Twain quote go? “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” It comes with the territory of being a kid. I can't imagine what comes with the territory of watching 17 of your fellow students gunned down at school. So some kids filled with piss and vinegar want to scream at the world after an afternoon of carnage? That seems fair to me.
  21. The singular courage it takes to attack and ridicule 16-year-old kids anonymously. The stones ... the guts ... the sheer will. Bravo. They're kids. They're filled with equal measures of passion and rebellion with a little stupid thrown in. When I get into a discussion with my art school sexually ambiguous feminist fight-the-power niece, I don't ridicule or lambaste her. I gently challenge her point and encourage her to come back to the table with better arguments. Much like the way one deals with Papist.
  22. Tipper tried. Who's "they"? The anti-smokers pressured the media to change. Not sure how much they care about music or games.
