  1. It was a bear and she was a he. http://www.nj.com/passaic-county/index.ssf/2014/11/hiker_snapped_pictures_of_bear_before_fatal_attack_in_west_milford.html
  2. To me, a chipmunk in the woods at night sounds like a tyrannosaurus, but keep this in mind: "There have only been two recorded incidences in the United States and Canada of humans being killed by coyotes. One involved a child in Southern California in the 1980s and the other a 19-year old woman in Nova Scotia in 2009."
  3. Whispering into the video camera after the shot. Especially three and a half days after the shot.
  4. Not our best moment. She walked in to help me push a small tree over as I was moving back with the chainsaw. We met and both flinched as the saw hit which probably saved her leg. I grabbed my belt and tied her leg off, then threw her over my shoulder and put her in my truck. Drove like a madman to the hospital as she got on the phone with them to get them up to speed. Ugly wound. Under the knee, across the leg and deep, but somehow managed to avoid the bone and capsule. Just nicked the tendon. Off to another hospital and eight hours later the wound was sutured in the waiting room. The next day I walked into the LR to find my wife dancing in her brace. She lives a life of gratitude. As do I.
  5. Pick up a product called ScarAway Silicone Sheets. My wife took a chainsaw to the leg - 148 stitches, inside and out - and the scar is negligible.
  6. So I thought I'd try gap shooting. Hmmm ... maybe something in this.
  7. Mow this weekend and probably once more after that.
  8. Better solution: allow every weapon in a shorter 24-hour Purge-like season. Barehands, rocks, spears, bows, crossbows, rifles, bazookas, tannerite, Black Hawks; and open season on every fur and feathered animal including farm dogs and other hunters.
  9. Took a break from roofing the cabin (new respect for roofers) and was practicing with field tips when two does walked around me not 10 yards away in my "yard". I watched them for a moment and then said screw it and kept practicing. They didn't flinch. They finally started up the hill in the bush and I decided to try and stalk them. Busted me on my third step.
  10. It may be legal to bait hippies.
  11. Funny, I was just looking at a 1959 JM stamped Marlin in .35 this morning. Looks like a nice gun, but not sure I want to reload.
  12. Where do I purchase tag holders? I bought a few last year at GM and the window is too small to display the entire number, which I'm sure means that I am non-compliant. I'm only stalking small game on my property this week, but want to be prepared in case anyone questions whether I am a "citizen resident". Do you guys cut up the long string of yellow when starting out or just fold and stuff the whole thing into a pocket? And as I've yet to fill out a tag, can someone walk me through it? The first two panels are the back tag number. Then bear tag. Not shooting a bear. Bow/muzzle either sex. I doubt I'll try for a deer with a bow, but I wanted it just in case one walks up to me. This gives me one deer during bow season either sex? Reg season deer. One antlered deer during regular season any weapon? DMP - not selected. The actual license which lists my info and what I paid for Res Hunting, Bow Hunting Priv, DMP. This is what I need to sign and keep with me? Then the Report Harvest tag. Then another ID panel which seems to be the report form. What do I do with that? Another panel with just my ID on it. Keep in files or in field? And finally, a panel where I report a DMP. Thanks.
  13. "What sets a canoeing expedition apart is that it purifies you more rapidly and inescapably than any other. Travel a thousand miles by train and you are a brute; pedal five hundred on a bicycle and you remain basically a bourgeois; paddle a hundred in a canoe and you are already a child of nature." ~ Pierre Elliott Trudeau
  14. Let us know how well that works out for you.
  15. A lot of developers in the 80s reserved the mineral rights when the sold they subdivided. They had or have no intention to act on those rights, it's simply a cheap money grab. When this happened to me I told the seller to secure the rights or the deal would fall through. They did. My guess is that the developer will take 3K. There's a lot of property out there. Unless this is heaven, pass and find another if they won't sell it to fully unencumbered.
  16. Had one stolen from what was more or less my backyard. The next week the rest went were raised 12' off the ground and locked. So far, so good.
  17. That's cool, Curmudgeon. Thanks.
  18. A littler of fishers trained correctly would make a great unholy army of the night. I've yet to see a bobcat. Really want to see a bobcat. What terrain, time of day, time of year, etc., should I focus on?
  19. A wolverine is on my "like to see before I die" list. From a distance, of course.
  20. Imagine how many turkeys you could shoot if you killed all the turkey hunters. Better get busy.
  21. Will try to see this in a few days. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/07/movies/trophy-review.html?mcubz=3
  22. Are we still talking about shoes? Crockett and Jones, Alfred Sargent, Edward Green, RM Williams guy. First shot today with my new 40lb limbs on my Sage and a new tab that I think is too large for me. 15 yards.
