I used a mature grunt on a mature buck a few days ago, he came in on a string. Tried the same thing on a younger buck, he ran away with his tail down. I feel that they are seeking, and will go into the full out chase mode in a weeks time.

The problem is, just because you know a few people that do it, you get into dangerous territory in using a broad brush to paint your picture. Thats where assumptions start becoming evident. Regardless, Im with Culver on this, Im a hunter, of course I enjoy a kill. If you are a hunter and dont enjoy that aspect, then you may want to just take up photography instead. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that part of hunting and no reason to make excuses about it.

you don't get excited about a kill? I do and I am not ashamed of it. It is part of the sport..part of the traditional excitement of our heritage. ...hmmmm...we can hunt and kill but we can't enjoy the killing part of it? Sounds like another one that is all for femminizing the country. youth sports with no score keeping dressing the QB's in dresses because they can no longer get hit feelings...feelings...feelings. Great story! Sounds just like how it is when I take my daughter, shes 6 and this is her 3rd year going with me. I took her squirrel hunting the other day, she spotted the one squirrel we saw, and was proud as can be when we took it home. She wasnt nearly as proud as me though. Cherish every moment of hunting with him!

Again, NY sells tags for deer because they need the population kept in check. If guys are filling tags, they are doing their job. As long as the deer is not going to waste, why do you care if they eat it themselves or donate it? Your assumption that they are doing it just to "get a charge from killing" is nothing more than you making an assumption, and we all know what happens when you assume.

It means that I wont be able to get out in the woods much, if at all after work. I hate the time cahnge, and wish they would do away with it. Its pretty pointless.

The bloodtrail was almost non-existent. The initial shot caught the top part of one lung and got there through the no man's land between the spine and the thoracic aorta. Almost all of the bleeding was inside the chest cavity. I wasn't following the blood trail, I was following the water source I thought he would head to. I can't blame them for not finding him themselves. I figured it was something along those lines.

Larry, the idea behind getting back to doe ratio to a good level is not that you will have more bucks necessarily, its that the lower number of does will make the existing bucks move more to find a receptive doe, thus giving you a better chance of seeing the bucks. With a ton of does and only a few bucks, the bucks generally dont have to move much, so they wont, and you have less of a chance of seeing them.

Id be fine with it, though I doubt it would fix anything for long. Id be happier with a 1 buck per year deal. That would be a good start rather than go off the deep end with temporary extremes.

Thats pretty unfair for you to assume that just because someone has multiple tags, they will shoot at anything that moves. I could possibly shoot a total of 7 deer this year, that doesnt mean Im gonna shoot anything that moves. : I do agree that AR MIGHT make things slightly safer in the woods, as it would discourage shooting at movement or a color a bit more. But, there are alot of guys out that that shoot anything that moves and then ground check it. If they dont have the proper tag, they leave it to rot. AR wont change that, those guys are already doing something they shouldnt be. Usually when you hear about a hunting death, it is due to illegal activity, its almost never just a simple mistake of shooting at movement or a color.

You did the right thing. My hats off to you. I have been on the other end of that situation and ended up dealing with someone who didnt have your scruples. It sucked. Its just too bad there arent more hunters like you out there. To anyone that thinks that maybe the first guys didnt track the deer good enough, I dont remember any description of the blood trail and whos to say those guys wouldnt have called Deer Search and found it? Assumptions are dangerous. Again, great thing you did Wildcat.

I hunt out of a climber all the time. I strap my backpack to it, so you can see the back tag. Doenst just about every state make you wear a back tag? Im pretty sure you have to have it on so ENCON can see it from a distance.

I have mine on my backpack as well because it is usually on my back unless Im in the tree stand, then my backpack is hanging from the stand or tree and you can see it. I will put it on whatever jacket I am wearing to go small game hunting though.

In not sure what state land you guys hunt but most of the state land out this way is empty. Even opening day feels like you are hunting private land anymore.

Man is it cold today. Slow too. Haven't seen anything this afternoon yet. I'm starting to just be looking forward to the batch of chili in the crock pot at home. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

How's the all day shift going Geno? I'm back in my stand for the evening. We have almost a direct N wind tonight. Kinda odd for sitting in this stand. If rather have it a little more from the NW.
