Agree with others that it’s certainly not a “pizza destination “ spot lol. Not sure where you’re going but The Moose’s Tooth in Anchorage is pretty good and is also a brew pub- fun place but pretty popular. If you make it to Homer Fat Olives is place for wood fired pizza. Finn’s on the Homer Spit isn’t bad either

Hi Thanks to all for the advice. As I posted I am new to the food plot game- we have always hunted the larger tracts of timber etc and never planted anything around the camp. As I get older I can see my days of roaming and tracking are waning, and it’s time to establish some habitat and have other options.

Question from someone who has never done the food plot thing- why don’t you plant clover/ clover mixes in the fall?

Nice looking rifle. The Siamese Mauser has a strong action and you can load them hot- similar to a Ruger #1 load ( always check the manual) Navy Arms and Gibbs rifle both put together bolt 45-70 rifles years ago, built on a Siamese Mauser or British Enfield due to the rimmed cartridge and the fact they are strong actions. I almost acquired one at a local gun shop years ago but I blinked and it was sold. Best of luck with it!

Not sure if any forum members are fishing the DU tournament at Saratoga Lake- lot at Browns was about 2/3 full at 8:30. My little guy has a ball game today so I can’t fish but my wife and I bought tix and will be at Browns after the ball game if anyone stops in for a cold one at the drawings etc. Good luck and stay warm.

Splitear: i see you’re in Ballston Spa- there is a great resource for young kids right in Easton. Willard is a small place but they have a great kids program. My little guy and many of his classmates started at 3 or 4. Now as teenagers everything is about Gore or killington etc LOL it might be worth it for you and the family to take a ride over on a Saturday morning and check it out for next year. It’s a good value and the program for the little kids is great (or at least it was 10 years ago.

I would just get several different projectiles and see what your gun likes. FWIW I have an older Hawken replica with a green mountain barrel- what I believe is a 1 in 48 twist . Maxi balls shot ok. I couldn’t get the round balls to shoot very well. If you try round balls watch your patches as they can provide useful information in developing a load that works for you. There is also a military resort in Seward that serves active duty, retired and service connected veterans etc. A great jumping off point for saltwater fishing. About an hour from the upper Kenai and 2 from the middle Kenai for freshwater trout and salmon fishing. Feel free to pm me if I can be assistance- we go to Ak pretty much every year

Years ago I had that experience with my hawken repro- went to cci caps, which as stated earlier seem to be a little bigger and never had the problem again. Also as previously suggested a lttile filing should also easily resolve the problem

As stated earlier don't overthink it. A 7mm-08 will be all the rifle she ever needs for deer and like sized game. Add to that (as previously mentioned) that reduced recoil factory loads are available and to me it's a no brainer. I have one in the safe and enjoy shooting it but never really gave it much time in the woods (yet). I have a couple 6.5's in the safe but they are pre-man bun rifles, so they are chambered in 260 Remington, which is also an excellent caliber but due to its' lack of commercial success, ammo availability can be an issue . I carry one often and I've shot quite a few bucks with it and it always performed very well, even with sometimes "less than optimal" shot placement.

Another thing to consider is whether you plan on moving out of state in retirement. If you plan on moving but coming back each fall to your camp etc. it may be worthwhile as the lifetime license doesn't "expire" if you move out of state. There is also no "senior" non-resident privledge.

It was going pretty quick when we left. I did see a couple deer and they seemed to be in good shape, although that doesn't mean much overall. Here's to spring.
