Deer take numbers shows the Decline.
Robhuntandfish replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
would be interesting to see the number of hours in field also. If the deer take is down was it because of less deer, less hunters or just less hours in the field. The hunting demographic is def aged older these days and am betting number of hours in the field has decreased even if license sales havent. Sure is an inexact science. But I am betting my area of 7F and 7J still have 25,000 -30,000 permits to give out and leftovers later. And a high number for 6S as well. -
one of my staff counted 38 turkeys in the fields yesterday in southern Madison county - they are moving about and struttin!!! May 1 cant be soon enough.

probably wont get much good intel on deer until later in the season. Right now they are generally yarded up in any spot that has just a little bit of food around. So common deer numbers and runs for the fall might not be evident. I usually dont even put out cams until at least late july into august. But with a new piece of ground might be helpful to put them out. Only thing is you dont want to be going out there all the time in the same spots and way in etc. But i would def walk the entire property once to see whats there. I usually put my cams out for a good month straight from Aug 1 - sept 1. Then move them again til the Oct opener. You can tell where deer are coming thru and what trails the most by wear and sign. The first year of hunting there will tell you the most for sure. I would look for trails and ways to get into them without getting busted and plan on putting a stand in those spots.

For Firearms Buffs and Historians

My uncle retired from Remington many years ago. Awesome that you have that rifle that was passed along to you. We are pretty much neighbors and sad to see that Harden furniture is falling on some tough times as well. -
just saw 3 toms struttin and showing off for about 8 or 9 hens on madison Co / Oneida co border. - was good to see!

we need a dislike button! lol yeah this week looks to remain colder than normal again. Sat it was so nice to be outside for sure. Def have the spring fever -
I am mostly a self taught hunter. Dad taught me to fish for sure , but hunting was mostly on my own. Learned through just trying it and even some good info from hunting magazines and TV shows (have to weed through to get helpful info). But really didnt grow up with a deer hunting mentor and there werent really any turkeys back then to say so. Def learned to turkey hunt from trial and error. I have mentored a few people for sure throughout the years. But have to say that I have enjoyed trying to figure out the hunting puzzle as much as the game take itself. Always been a good problem solver so I think hunting was right up my alley.

yeah it pisses me that we can have autonomous cars and refridgerators that tell you when you out of milk but they cant stop robo calls or telemarketing. And it always amazes me there is enough people out that that still fall for this stuff that it must work cause they keep doing it.

Maddie, the thoughts do change from sadness of loss to also the memories that you shared together and will also bring a smile to your face. I am sure there will always be a feeling that your life is now missing your times together but remember that life was filled up with all of those times you've shared together. And I think Grampy nailed it as he usually does. Sorry for your loss.

I was out on chenango canal. Didn't even see a trout but it was nice to be out. Usually get at least one out of there. Had to wade through a good amount of snow in some spots. That's ok it was a good day to fish.

Happy birthday
-
Best wishes for your day today as well Jay. I would bet the pair of Lou and Leo would have some good stories to share over a beer.
-
Didn't know if I was going to share this as it is very personal for me. But thought it is Easter and maybe would take pause to be sure everyone appreciates family a little more today. April 1 has always been the opening day of trout season around here and have always gone. My Dad was the greatest stream trout fisherman I have ever seen. He could catch them out of a rain gutter. He passed 30 seasons ago but I always have the same tradition. I grab a bud longneck, his favorite beer, and i go to visit him and have a beer on opening day of trout season. Now this is not a sad thing. It's something I always have done and will always do. We were very close and we always took the day off from school or work to fish opening day. We had years where the water was unfishable, years where we were tearing up nice browns on oriskany creek in snow so bad we couldn't see across the crick, or got brookies up in lewis county and cooked them up for breakfast after. School used to ask me where was my "legal" excuse for being out for the day. I told them I went trout fishing with my dad. They would say i needed a note or a legal excuse. I told them to tell my dad that. After a while they didn't even call him anymore. Cause he would say we weren't going to lie about it, he went fishing with his dad and will again next year. He passed in my senior year of high school. And the last time we fished together he caught 2 big browns on chittenango creek even though he couldn't go more than a few yards on the stream. So today I will go to his grave sight have a beer with my Dad and be sure I make at least one cast for a trout. And always will. When I am gone the next thing I want to see is my Dad sitting on a rock on a beautiful trout stream with tails sticking out of his creel waiting for his son to walk down the creek cause he already limited out. Everyone have a good Easter, enjoy food and family today. And happy opening day of trout season.

Live from the rifle range
Robhuntandfish replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Got out to shoot the 30/30 today. Played with hornady lever revolution and Remington soft points. Hornady def had better groups. Nice day to be out , got out before family dinner. I had changed out scopes and put this 2.5 power on. Worked great. -
Gonna hide them in the same location as the ham and scalloped potatoes, somewhere near the table, then later on the couch. Am sure they will disappear though.
