  1. My ex father in law always takes his tractor up the hill to hunt cause he has a hard time with the hill a bit. But he hasnt gotten a deer in 6 years. I dont hunt the areas he hunts except maybe the last weekend of season. I have yet to walk in there and not see deer most everytime. Last year I walked in there last weekend of gun and in 20 minutes had one down. A couple of years ago he was saying how there doesnt seem to be any deer. I walked up in there and in the first hour saw three bucks and a doe and shot a 7 point. Now he doesnt do anything much with scent control so that might be it. But deer still put together machinery and people and are gonna be wary whether or not they are "used" to machinery i would think. Esp if your going in the dark of the morn with headlights. I dont think they are used to that at all. if you can walk, then walk. Its good exercise and gives you more time to glass or scout on the way in. If you have problems walking then use the wheeler so you can get out to hunt for sure. Ask the people who cant get around if they wish they could walk in instead of riding the wheeler and i bet they will say they wish they could.
  2. for the 20 g savage i started using remington accutips but could never find them. So i tried the federal trophy copper sabots and they were even better, $1 cheaper a box, easier to find and more accurrate.
  3. there was pics this spring in the paper/online of a bear swimming across Oneida lake over by the North shore. ( I was also out fishing on the north shore that morn but a 1/2 mile from where the bear was) So they come thru. But just not a huntable amount around here. Hoping that they continue to increase numbers. Bears seem to be increasing all over the state. Good luck 607!
  4. Have seen them in groups in the fields already. And other birds flocking up as well. Getting the flock out of here, and heading south.
  5. we went on a bear hunt last year for early bear - no luck of course- but my buddy was gonna bring his 300 savage. Opened the case and there was an old .22. LOL brought the wrong gun. So he carried his pistol and sat close to us! my other buddy was nice enough to sharpen a stick for him to use just in case. Wow did we laugh, prob scared the bears away! We are going this fall as well and hope to check out his 300 this year.
  6. how was the meat? never had gator. And a dip on that would be cool. Bet they have a camo/gator skin color. But either way its real nice! congrats
  7. i ran out of arrows looking at those pics
  8. was at the range on sunday and its a good feel that season is almost here. 30-06 one shot bullseye- put it back in case til bear season. 20 gauge savage - 5 shots - all good in kill zone. - 30/30 winchester 94, my favorite - Dad helped me buy 30 years ago- also dialed in and ready! bring on the season!
  9. i had the laser eye surgery 20+ years ago. Was the greatest thing ever!! but now that im older eyes have changed and need glasses for driving and for distance . But not as bad as I needed them years ago.
  10. thats better!! lol have heard good things about bear meat - prob wont get one- but never know ! and need to make bear beer brats!
  11. looks like a real outdoors family there. Nice bear . Maine is awesome for sure and a warden is a great job to have. Wanted to do that myself.
  12. welcome and good luck bow hunting !! I also shoot a Bear Attitude that I got last year and got a 5 point with it on Oct 25th! Bow hunting is the best. Warmer and see more deer.
  13. not hunting near a dump anyway, for any reason. But cmon guys your ruining the thought of bear meat! lol.
  14. expanding my locations. I like having options. Got permission to hunt about 60 acres, have a lease for 120, and permission for a small 9 acre area......and working on a 12 acre area. #2 is learning to play the wind.
  15. got all my hunt clothes washed and hanging in the side shed. Now its just shooting the bow a couple times a week.
  16. i bought the buck commander target at walmart and it works fine. There are two sides for broadheads and have used the crossbow on it. But def dont use the field point sides with any crossbow shots. Even the field points on crossbow shoot right up to the fletch. Good thing about crossbow is dont need a lot of practice. Mine is like an MOA group out to 50 yards! I always carry a arrow with a field point to shoot at target after hunting and havent seen any difference between the two. Good luck with crossbow! I have a Parker - made in USA - lifetime warranty - shoots great.
  17. plus gun opens earlier NZ than south. So bow should open a little earlier
  18. i used to make an ultimate combo trip for the early north. Early goose went til the 25th, early bear was open, then bow opened on the 27th for last years tag, and we used to fish! So we spent one morn goose hunting, one evening bear hunting and one day bow hunting and fished around that. Rented a cabin for 4 days - Was pretty cool!
  19. I think that was def part of my issue. The angle of the lens was just throwing me off.
  20. shot some arrows on my lunch without glasses and some much better groups and of course no double pin issue. Guess im gonna go without. Maybe wear glasses til something comes close at least. thanks all for the help
  21. ive tried it and it was pretty good. Most of it I would make into some Bear beer brats! But would keep a few cuts for a stew and try a steak or two. But will have venison for most of that.
  22. had three this year that the ratchets were broken. Prob from some of the bad storms we had and the tree swaying. Have also found them before where squirrels had chewed the straps. I ALWAYS put a backup one on each stand as well and check each time I go up.
  23. might try that lower prescription idea. But only prob is I dont have an old pair and ins wont pay for another to be made. But it might be worth asking the doc about - thanks
  24. I only have three pins and would think I would still have the double vision for however many pins there is. And have a large peep as well. thanks though very much, trying to figure it out. Gonna do some shooting today and see how it goes with/without glasses.
