  1. have been up there trout fishing years ago. Saw scat up near lost ponds on the trail. Was fishing sumner creek and there was a guy standing on the bridge that we could see back where we started. Then 2 guys. We fished for a bit and came back and had gotten a few trout and came back and they were still there. Guy said "you never saw it did you?" And when I asked 'what' he said there was a bear about 40 yards from us up the creek and it kept moving just ahead of us for like 3 different holes. I did see tracks and scat but never saw the bear. That stuff is thick. Dont really have an idea where to start up there but a lot of it is really thick and swampy for sure.
  2. and shes packin'! she might be better with the shotgun than you too! lol
  3. nice buck for any farm in NY . good luck!
  4. dunno who the artist is but that is def a paint on version! and not liking the camo......who wants to hide her!!!!! wow. lol
  5. warm cider is a great idea. gonna try that this year. I usually dont take anything but maybe a water.
  6. great memories and a great trip for you. Always have wanted to do that myself. Congrats! and I also know a guy that went on an elk trip and in the first 10 minutes a 10point whitetail was in front of him. Lol Good for you! Have been planning a cow elk archery hunt for 2020 myself just for that experience!
  7. if you can travel that creek bed and use it as cover that would be a good plan.
  8. access to stands is def a big consideration. Hunting isnt much good if you just walked through everything. I always try to place them in easy access areas that i can get in as quiet as possible. Cert dont want to go thru bedding areas to get to a location. Also set them up so I can skirt the edge of a field without being seen too much. I guess it would mostly pend on where you think deer will be coming from to your stand area. Or hunt those farthest locations later in season or only at the best times they are favorable for wind direction.
  9. Always thought if I could get enough tree stands up I could run zip lines from one to the other or maybe sky bridges..........yup sometimes there is too much time to think while in the stand! lol
  10. Venison cheeseburger with Utica greens on it. Fresh tomatoes with a little ceasar! And a happy pup that got to clean up the plate! lol
  11. had it happen two years ago. A five point was out in trail in front of me. Got to half draw and he looked right at me. Was holding the bow at half draw for what seemed like forever trying to be as still as possible. Then he turned and I tried to draw the bow and couldnt.......
  12. you sound just like him. lol He is also retired and tries to fit in a lot of things and hasnt only been out in his new boat twice this year. I do the same thing, would like to do more small game but I concentrate so much on deer season. Also in the summer used to go somewhere bass fishing every weekend. Used to fish the St. Lawrence. Now its pretty much Oneida Lake where I live and nothing else. But I know guys that all they do is walleye fish and catch them all the time, and guys that just flyfish and are great at it, etc.......nope I hunt everything and fish for everything. lol. And still want to get into duck and goose hunting and am trying to get serious on a NY bear! add it to the list.
  13. he was just weighing the days of being skunked to a lot of good days catching trout. He def enjoys his time out the most successful or not but also would enjoy catching more fish some days. It was mostly philosophical he isnt really competitive at all. Older guy that was thinking must be nice to catch those trout all the time......and be real good at that. Hes the guy that will turkey hunt from sunup to noon just to be out there.
  14. A buddy of mine was saying maybe he has too many interests in the outdoors. He knows someone that fishes the finger lakes and specializes in catching trout there and is great at it. Always gets them , nice expensive boat etc. And my buddy is into fishing for trout, walleye, perch, has two boats (one to get into ponds), likes to turkey hunt, deer hunt, squirrel hunt etc. But seems to spread himself too thin and thought how great it would be to focus and be real good at one of these. Cause there is also a lot of trial and error with being so diverse. So where do you fall??? I am in that same category and like to dabble in different things and try new ones. But like he said if he gathered the expense and time of all his spread out gear etc, he could be the expert trout fisherman or grand slam turkey guy.......... same thing would get boring to me I would think.
  15. gonna be in Indian lake area last weekend before bow opener with two hunting buddies. Gonna fish in am and bear hunt afternoons. Just hopefully will get a sight of one. If not we usually catch a lot of fish at least and swap hunting stories.
  16. gonna add one this weekend. That will give me 10 on 120 acres, 2 on 60 acres, 1 on 9 acres and 1 on 12 acres. I have a lack of stands for east winds though. I see that now going into season.
  17. uh oh! i just got permission today to hunt a small plot of new ground! thought I was ready but next weekend gotta scout and put up one more stand and some trail cams ASAP! But a good problem to have i suppose.
  18. havent ever downed one this big. hope this is the year. Seems like I get a 5 point every year! This is prob the candidate! lol
  19. pulled cams and got a beauty of a 9 point that i will be after for sure.
  20. madison county area. New ground I am gonna hunt only 9 acres and I think 8.9 of it is covered in poison ivy!
  21. wow thats thinking out da box! lol. I use a little clip on light that goes on my hat if needed. Got so I dont go in the dark anymore. Go with just enough light to see. Bumping too many deer in the dark. Like to be able to see- i hunt near a lot of fields and if deer are in the field I go around a different way. Tired of getting blown at in the dark walking in!
  22. thats a good omen finding the antler! and i put up my last stand two weeks ago and am still fighting off the poison Ivy! good luck!
